RE: help needed on first purchase

OK, ready to take the first big leap, and I dont know a lot about fifth wheels having never bought one, I know I need a rear kitchen, do not need a fireplace, and somewhere between 27-31ft,for just my wife and I, I have looked and priced several, please give me a little input on best brands, models , maybe even best place to go look for purchase, thanks kld
Welcome to RV.net Good hunting lookinf for your first fiver.
My FIL and my DW's cousins both have had rear kitchen models. In both instances they had leak issues at the rear cap to roof joint with different manufacturers. In both instances they felt that heavy loading for long-term snowbirding caused excessive bounce and jarring with the rear kitchen floorplan contributing to the leaks.
On one particularily rough interstate my FIL's kitchen sink pop right up and out of the coutner top
From my personal experience going cmaping with these folks no one seemed to be able to view the televisions straight on in these floorplans with either turning reclivers 45 degrees or turn their heads 45 degrees. Also whoever got the sofa had to sit lengthwise on the sofa to aviod turning thier head and neck.
Also if someone was cooking in the kitchen they had ot look over their shoulder to talk to anyone else sitting in the trialer or to look at the television.
You choice, but I won't have a rear kitchen model ever. Personal preference I know as many people swear by the rear kitchen floorplans as swear at them. Just hopefully giving you some things to think about.

RE: Dually or Single Rear Wheel for towing

Well from first hand experience pulling the trailer in my sig which has about 3100 - 3200 lbs pin weight ready to travel with a F350 SRW and now a F350 DRW I can tell you the stability and confidence making quick lane changes is so much better with the DRW.
And yes you get more physical exercise with the DRW as you can't park as close to stores and to major event parking lots with the DRW as you can a SRW, but for us who tows long distances the extra hassle of the size is worth it.
Our truck is my wife's daily driver and using her mirror's she has gotten very proficient backing into parking places at her office which is quite a confined parking lot.

RE: Fords "Unconventional" tow vehicle

Why? How many of andy's setups have been in an accident because of towing?
Dodge guy who drives a Ford Excursion:W
You may not want to ask Andy what he thinks of your choice in tow vehicles for TT's as he much prefers high performance passenger sedans as his base for his preferred tow vehicle over large SUV's with a high centre of gravity suspended from low tech solid axles and springs.
I personally do know a few of Andy's customer and the cultist descriptor of them is not that far out there when it comes to their confidence in what he promotes and in their defense and commitment to what he recommends.

RE: Fords "Unconventional" tow vehicle

One thing that I think should be noted about Andy Thomson and Can-Am is that they don't try to steer anyone away from driving a truck -- if a truck is what you want they're more than willing to set you up accordingly. But fortunately they offer carefully thought-out solutions for the rest of us too.
I beg to differ, about 10 years ago Andy personally did his very best to tell me what "I" wanted and needed and become quite cold and hostile when we were looking for our first fifth wheel and did not come to his perspective.
Needless to say we walked away without purchasing anything from their delaership.
Now they sell DRV Mobile Suites which I think will end up being our retirement rig, but I am having a hard time going back to them with the bad taste in my mouth that he left me with.

RE: Did you know Newmar pays their factory workers $30+/hr

I am the OP and the salesmen gave me this line with the conviction of a slimy con-artist during the same week that 400 skilled welders making an average 28-30$ per hour were put out of a job at a locomotive plant in my city by a international company moving operations to a lower cost region where they purportedly will only have to pay skilled welders $16 per hour to build locomotives.
Maybe they are hiring Lippert welders to build locomotives now. There a scary thought.:E
I don't begrudge anyone a decent wage and I also realize money goes further in some areas than in others but I just believe there are RV makers paying wages averaging $30 per hour, just like a I don't believe this company will find qualified heavy machinery welders willing to work for $16 per hour unless they are desperate and then I can only horribly imagine how poor the work environment and quality will be.
BTW my employer's entry wage for entry level technicians is $14 per hour in the workforce i am a supervisor in.

RE: Carriage - update - 1-23-12

good news if the frame is a good frame and who might be the builder of them.
chevman
This is a quote from the Lifestyle Luxury RV website. "an initial list of features and benefits can be seen at www.LifestyleLRV.com. Amenities include double-stacked box steel tube frames, the dual-floor basement and full-wall slide with an above-the-frame slide-out system. Initial production is scheduled for March."
Sure sounds like a very close copy at least of the Carriage design concepts.
I wish the new company lots of success and will be watching them closely as they prepare to come to market.
Now the idea of a new company warrantying another defunct companies warranty no matter how similar is preposterous.
I think disgruntled owners of the previous makers will simply have file suit and line up behind creditors looking for bread crumbs after the feeding frenzy is finished with the previous management group.

RE: Beware of Diesel Fuel Additives with DLC coated components

Ford is also trying to throw Bosch under the bus (maybe deservedly) stating that they buy the pump as a black box from bosch and don't do any testing on it.Ford even puts the scar chart in it's response. Not sure what the point is there, as it would in my eyes point the finger at ford.
Same goes for fords customers. Ford states that they have been warned about all the precautions their customers need to take.
To be fair to Ford, I sincerely believe that Bosch told them very little (and they know little) about the magic pixie dust sprinkled on the CP 4 pump to make it both cheaper to build and handle higher pressures.
I do believe Ford saying they do no testing.
Given how antagonistic Ford (or any major car maker) is with their suppliers, there is very little sharing of knowhow and IP.
Bosch keeps cards close to vest to protect their margins.
In any case, the buck stops with Ford, not Bosch when it comes to the customer.
Very interesting technical discussion.
However may I say "Here we go again"
Although the 6.7L engine is built by Ford they have a major system supplier in Bosch that they are buying an end to end pre-packaged sealed solution from in the fueling system and as a consumer I am very concerned that the relationship between Ford and Bosch will go the same route that Navistar and Ford end up going with the 6 liter engine.
Due to Ford's warranty denials the dirty laundry between Ford and Bosch regarding the technical challenges is getting plastered around the industry and consumer space while GM is managing their image much more positively by apparently not denying any warranty claims so far.
Ford needs an image management team that has the clout to make Ford's senior management understand the unnecessary damage they are doing to their reputation with these denials while the industry determines the underlying cause and affect and engineers a complete solution.

RE: Did you know Newmar pays their factory workers $30+/hr

I was taking this thread in three directions.
1.In the direction of the sales rep's narrative or story. Instead of impressing my with his knowledge of the technical aspects of the current product line he wanted to tell me abut wages.
2. I see a previous thread regarding piecemeal versus hr wages in the RV industry had a very strongly opinion perspective of the Newmar factory workers quality and apparent piecemeal work results. So my question regarding hourly wages was answered there.
3. While i don't begrudge anyone a decent wage and while I don't consider $15-16 per hour a decent wage I am to understand that Progress Rail employees in Muncie Indiana building locomotives (Welders, Machinists, Electricians) are only paid $15-26 per hour so I was simply asking a question. Could Newmar possible pay that much more and still make a profit?

Did you know Newmar pays their factory workers $30+/hr

I was talking to a large Newmar dealer today about looking at a new Newmar fifthwheel and out of the sales person mouth comes this statement.
He went on to say that is why Newmar have a much higher standard oF quality than other builders (he specifically named Mobile Suites/DRV) that only pay about $15/hr
He knew I already owned a Newmar product so why he felt he needed to make such a ludicrous statement in beyond me.
I have toured the DRV factory and the Newmar factory and i don't see any significant difference in quality. I simply like the design and floorplans of the Newmar Kountry Aire product and I like the elegant understated decor and woodwork of the Newmar product
Is there anyone out there that knows or believes if there could possibly be a shred of truth to his statement?
Little did he know it actually turned me off to his dealership.

RE: ST vs LT tires

Give them a tire that will suit their expectations of long life at a low cost and you'll have a returning customer.
FastEagle
If RV.net forum members are being referenced in this comment it would seem like an incorrect conclusion as most forums members have clearly articulated that they are willing to spend good money for 5ver tires that cannot be described as "low cost".
Michelin, Dunlop, Goodyear G614 cannot be described as low cost monetarily.
If low cost is meant to refer to less money being spent repairing damage done to the trailer when a cheap inferior tire explodes then I'm definitely into lower cost
If low cost refers to less stress and worry while towing my unit then I'm guilty of also wanting a lower cost solution to give me confident reliable towing experiences.

RE: Storable BBQ??

A lot of people on this forum, including us, are using this one. It cooks great and is small enough to be easily stored. Weber Q100
I have had one of these for almost 8 years now. Stays in my 5ver basement year round and is used all the time camping. Looks and works as good today as it did when i bought it.
One of those great purchase decisions in life.

RE: travelling 401 thru Windsor

The other trick is take the ferry between Sombra ON and Marine City MI very quick and pleasant ride across the river. The ferry can accommodate transport trucks and I have crossed with my fiver with zero issues.
What is the cost for using the ferry. We have noticed the signs but never considered using it. Sounds like a possible alternative.
Sombra Ferry Website
You will find all Information at their website. hours of operation and costs.
Good folks running the service.
Crossing the Bluewater Bridge with our truck and fiver is $10.50 if I remember and the ferry is $16.00 if I remember.

RE: Finally new truck

I think if I traded for a Bosch CP4 equipped engine I'd be running a lubricity improver in every tank of fuel.
I am considering an upgrade to a F450 but that current Bosch CP4 HPFP scares the******out of me.
While that's a beautiful truck but, sorry to the OP but that fuel system scares me.

RE: cable inlet connection good for satellite dish inlet ?

Can I use the cable inlet connection on the exterior side of the trailer as an input from our satellite dish ?
I've tried, but it doesn't seem to work. Is it because there is a broken or bad connection in the internal trailer wiring or an electrical reason ? if the latter, I guess I'll have to make my own inlet ?
Thanks.
ice2fire you must have a direct connection to your sat receiver from the dish. Your satellite signal cannot go through the the Winegard amplifier even with power tuned off.
You must bypass the circuitry completely.
I just build a modified Winegard antenna amplifier bypass system for my trailer to allow both cable and satellite connection through the single outside cable connector.
Mod for using Satellite feed with Winegard RV Amplifier
While this does prevent watching both cable and sat feeds simultaneously it does eliminate the need for feeding a cable through a window. The chances of wanting to watch cable and sat together I decided was slim.
My modified system allows me to connect the sat receiver directly to the dish when I wish to use the sat source and using loop jumper to connect the amplifier back in quickly when I want to use a cable source. That is the top jumper on the front of the modified amplifier.
The bottom jumper allows me to feed the sat signal coming from the sat receiver RG6 output to my secondary (bedroom) TV since I use the HDMI sat receiver output to feed my primary TV
While this limits the bedroom TV to watch the same channel as the primary TV it's better than running all new cabling to support a second sat receiver.
I have attached a web album showing the rear view and the front view of the modified assembly which I mounted in a box over the original hole for the amplifier in the wall behind the TV.
Don't hesitate to ask questions if you want more info.

RE: working on your RV at an RV park?

Last year we limped into a campground in Florida with a shattered leaf spring. Found a mobile boat trailer repair and builder to come to the park and replace all 4 springs in situ at the campground. Campground host was kind enough to allow work to be done right at the site.
Situation and type of work to be done can make a huge difference.
However I don't think this is a good situation where planning to ask for forgiveness is better than permission.
