RE: Monclova - No Mordida!

Who or what does the DI NO A LA MORDIDA phone number connect to? Don't know. It is a Mexico number, as one out of country would be 001... And in our several drives though Monclova haven't had any issues. Some one went to quite a bit of effort to make and install the signs so I take it as a good sign. Maybe Tampico will be next?

RE: Monclova - No Mordida!

How did the rest of the trip go? Rob The drive up was the easiest ever. I designed it to stay at RV Parks all the way. Had better sleeps than we do at Pemexes. The border crossing was quick. The gal at the customs booth had her machine read our vehicle passes and gave receipts for both. I found the $300. deposit on the truck was a credit in our Visa account 2 days later. Even the US Custom guys with their serious and thorough search, were cordial. Bien Viaje!

Monclova - No Mordida!

The city of Monclova has had a reputation for nuisance stops by the local police for minor or imaginary infractions. Never the less, for the last two years we have driven that route down and up Hwy 57 using the Eagle Pass / Piedras Negras crossing. The roads are good and the customs stop is convenient. At Monclova, we take the circular route around to the west. Each passing we have encountered local police with no interruption. I have written in detail about this by-pass in an earlier posting - do a search for Monclova. Last week, coming up to Monclova we saw a painted sign that I noticed said something about No Mordita. Then another and another. So we pulled over and took a picture. DI NO A LA MORDIDA 01 800 837 2234 dinoalamordida@hotmail.com I'll try to post the image. Good news, I think.

RE: Going north - Eagle Pass, Tx

Day five Matahuela to Tx. We went straight up Hwy 57 to Eagle Pass. BEST SIGN EVER: Coming into Monclova from the south, there were 5 fairly large signs stating Di NO al la MORDITA, with a image of an apple with a circle and red line through it, and a phone number and an email address. I'll post a photo of the sign when I can load it.

RE: Telcel MF30

We have used a Telcel stick for two years at our place in the Yucatan. This year I brought it with us on our drive north, and it is way better connection to the internet than weak wi-fi signals I have relied on in the past. Telcel has a variety of internet stick plans. For different lengths of time 1 day to a month, and different data needs -- bajo, medio and alto. I remember going to their site and doing a questionaire which categorized your usage. I didn't understand it all, and in the end, we always go for the biggest package, alto30 which gives us all we want for the month. However, we do not stream buy a few YouTubes and no movies, which I understand are data hogs. BTW, you have to understand the enlisting procedure which includes sending and receiving a text message to confirm your package, otherwise your bandwith disappears quickly.

RE: Going north - Eagle Pass, Tx

Was the swim center open and busy for Semana Santa? I always liked that place when the pools were opened. Glad to hear that they are finally spend our toll money on that road. The pool (Villahermosa) was packed. We had to wait til it closed and the parking lot emptied (7pm) to move up near the building where the electric worked. I talked to a guy on a motorcycle from Alberta last night in Cholula. He retreated from the Gulf coast and the crowds there. Day 4 -- settled into one of the cleanest parks in Mexico, Las Palmas in Matahuela. Coming up Hwy 57, lots and lots of police and military check points. All cordial and friendly. Early tomorrow we make the 9 hour drive to the border.

RE: Going north - Eagle Pass, Tx

Day Three - Villahermosa to Cholula Good news, The roads are in the best condition I have seen them in the last four years. Large stretches of the Cuota through eastern Vera Cruz State are shiny new. Also, there is more military and local and Federal police presence than ever. I was told that it is this way through Semana Santa. We are on schedule to be in Matahuela tomorrow. Then if anyone want to join up from there, or Saltillo we will be going up Hwy 57 to Piedras Negras/ Eagle Pass on Sunday.

RE: Going north - Eagle Pass, Tx

Road report -- Day two we are at the balneario at Villahermosa. Got here early 4 pm and it was HOT - 38C/ close to 100F. We have the fans going full blast and hoping for a cool night. Tomorrow will be slower going over the bad roads in south Vera Cruz. But it will bring up to the climb to the highlands and cooler temps.

(270 milrs) Last year, pulling our 5th wheel, we left Matahuela in the early morning and were in San Antonio by late afternoon. And Saltillo is much more north than Matahuela (710 kms to PN).

RE: COLUMBIA CROSSING UPDATE!

So...is there a better choice crossing North coming from Saltillo, heading to Arkansas I recommend the Piedras Negras / Eagle Pass, Tx crossing. From Saltillo, stay right on Hwy 57. Good hiway, easy, well marked customs access about 25 kms from border. We have used this crossing for the last several years. There is a truck bypass for Monclova that I wrote about last year. Do a search for Monclova on this forum and I have the details. Cheers.

We met a couple from that RV group here in Paamul this winter. The initials of the group are AMAAC but a ggogle search did not bring up anything for me. I will email them for contact details.

Caravan on the go...

Just when we might think there were no more caravans down here, we had a group of 19 rigs arrive here in Paamul a couple of days ago. Mostly large Class A rigs, all from parts of the US, as far as I could see. Have a good trip, please.

RE: Banda Ancha confusion

To be clear, Banda Ancha is for the Telcel internet stick, not the cel phone. (Though they both use sim cards and have a tel. number) We were told that the local market did not renew these accounts like they do for Amiga plan cel phones. However, here is an annoying little wrinkle. We have been adding the 500 pesos each month and last time, I went in to the local Telcel office and dropped another 500 pesos at the Caja. I was not told that the required text message had changed from "bat 30" to "alto 30". So I sent a text, and getting no reply, sent the text a couple more times. No luck. Went back to Telcel and was told of the new text message, BUT, since I had sent 3 or 4 messages, I had used 2 pesos of my account and since the alto 30 cost 499, I did not have enough in the account!!! Argh!! So this month I am on Medio 30 and will have to go back to Alto 30 next month. Cheers.

RE: My Bucket List of Mexico

Haven't been to Mexico in the RV yet but would love to go to the Yucatan and see Chichen Itza. Chichen Itza is perhaps the most famous and most visited, but consider several other ancient sites in the area -- Uxmal and Ek Balam are nearby, and when you get to the coast check out Tulum which is set on the sea shore and Coba also nearby. Each historic ruin is amazingly unique. And then of coarse, on the edge of the Yucatan there are the Caribbean beaches -- the best in North America, and we have been to many of them.

RE: Telcel Banda Ancha Internet...new rate structure

My Telcel Stick has been working well this winter, then last week I went to renew for another month for the usual 500 pesos, and went home to send my text to "5050" with the message "bat30" It didn't come back with the confirming text, so I tried again, and again. Then all I got back was a message that I didn't have enough in my account, etc. So I went to the Telcel and lined up for a service person. A young lady who spoke some English beckoned me and I went through my story, showing her what came up on my laptop. Firstly, I was told the "codes" have changed. No more "bat30", but now a message is to read, "alto30". This was not what I was told the day before when I bought the time. As I was still standing there at the wicket, I tried the "alto30" and it wouldn't work. It turns out that the several texts I had sent, had reduced my account to less than the 499 pesos required to launch the service. The option they came up with was that I enlist a smaller, cheaper plan the "medio30" that requires only 399 pesos. This plan was for 2 GB of service, but the good news is that there is a 2X promotion on now and we have 4 GB to work with this month. Very frustrating, I told them, and not my fault in any way I could see... But she was pleasant, at least, so I thanked her. Be sure to check which message you are to send, when you purchase renew your service package. If you go to this web site you will see the options for their plans, and the codes for them. http://www.bat.telcel.com/planes_internet_amigo.html

RE: Caravan or travel buddy needed to Mayan Riviera mid-December

A recommendation for the Eagle Pass, Tx / Piedras Negras crossing. It is about 3 hours from San Antonio. We overnight in Eagle Pass at the Casino and then cross early. Do a search n this forum for Piedras Negras, and you will find many references to this Hwy 57 route. Maybe we will see you when you get here.

RE: Recommendations for cell phone service in Mexico

We have Telcel phones and have their international phone plan. I'm not 100% sure of the details, but it works something like this. Calls from Mexico to US & Canada are charged to your account in 15 minute chunks at about 11 pesos per chunk. I think you can get a better rate than that if you talk to a cooperative Telcel person that you can understand and visa-versa. I believe there is a 6 peso rate for these 15 minute chunks but it may involve keeping a certain balance. Anyway we use our cel phones to talk to family and friends. Talk is very clear as though you were on any domestic phone.

RE: Mexico Rving Blogs

We travelled all over Mexico for several years, and then settled down in the Paamul rv park. Our blog covers a little of our years of driving up and down, but mostly about building our winter home and living in this area. Come on down! http://palapalife.blogspot.com/
