RE: Friends from the "OOP'S" thread.

Larry, keep that cold to yourself, but get over it!
Rosie, Glad Art is doing well.
I can't keep up!!
Todays weather - chilly, looks like a blizzard on one or two of the mountains here, but sun shining on another. We are seeing more and more RVs here. Pretty soon there will be as many RVs as there are cars and pickups on the road. Our peaceful little community is starting to awaken to the chaos of the tourist season with all the fun and strangeness we love about it.
The three legged bear has been spotted in Denali Park, road is closed part time to Seward, the hares have lost all the white fur, and Molli is still holding down the sidewalk for us.
Everyone stay healthy and happy, and have fun.

Rosie, there are a bunch of us on line. I rarely get to be here during day. Should be doing EMS things, but this is more funner - a term I heard from a teacher today. I think I like it.

RE: Alaska travel

ALASKA ROAD CONDITIONS/CONSTRUCTION
Just wanted to let you guys know that when you get to Alaska we have a lot of construction going on here.
The road to Seward is closed at certain times during the day or night and only emergency traffic can get through. There are also other places where you will find that happening. Hopefully you can get the infor mation you need from this site.
Have a safe, beautiful, and fun trip.

RE: Booth/table

Ron fisherman, your table set up is similar to ours. We love it! It has one leaf that makes it comfortable, most of the time to seat up to 6.
Jet boater. I like that idea too.
Those bug zappers are handy. We need them up here.

RE: Booth/table

We opted out of the booth for a table and chairs. The table was bolted/screwed to floor and was just as inconvenient to use as the booth. We were in Indiana and found a person who manufactures furniture for RVs. WE purchased a desk where the dining table that goes with it fits under the desk. On one side there are drawers, the other has a little "computer" desk for keyboard and printer underneath. We find it versitile and love the storage.

RE: verizon mifi

I called Verizon a month ago about this. They do not have data plans for Canada. You can get a plan for phone, but doublecheck the data plans for smartphones, etc.
Hi hershey,
I think it is $10 for voice--but data is a different kettle of fish.
For example if I use my sasktel data stick in USA the charges are $3.00 per meg.

RE: Blackout curtains for looooong AK days?

Ok, it is now almost "daylight" at 5:30 AM and I can sit outside and read till about 10 PM. I put a fleece over my DH's window so I can sleep in the morning. I have to sleep downstairs with dog most of the night. She is old now and wants to go outside about every other hour. She also whines if she is alone, so I get about 2 hours in bed then am up the rest of the night. This may be why I can sleep well in the daylight.
I like the bath towel idea. There are really good ideas here.
Now, what about the sound? How do you handle that? Traffic all night! A lot of people travel at night to avoid the daytime heavy traffic. It has already started. To me the sound of the trucks passing at night, or trains, is nice - if not too loud or persistant.

RE: Friends from the "OOP'S" thread.

Almost daylight at 5:30 and light till enough to read till about 10 PM. We are loosing night time quickly.
Mom and 3 cubs spotted in park for two days in a row - not by me. I did see a moose who seemed to be looking fore a birthing room in back of the cabin. She didn't seem too bothered by my presence. Moli continued to hold the sidewalk down for her as she passed us. I keep looking for the bears and moose and have one of my cameras available as I go about my day.
We are losing snow - slowly - on the mountains. Every day there are changes. For some reason, I am not looking forwrd to the summer weather, although it rarely gets above 70s here.
The two kids were from a Christian school. Just playing around. I think they may have been brothers. I am SO GLAD I am not a teacher!!!
Have a good weekend everyone. Keep safe, healthy and happy.

RE: Pantry Mod

Great ideas. I don't have picture of it yet, but I saw something on the net once where someone cut the foam insulation into "slices" the depth of the closet placing them along the wall of the closet. The slices were as tall as I wanted in various heights. They then put thin plywood or something rigit between the slices to make shelves. I did that in my house and it worked well. I am asking my DS to take a photo of it. I actually attached the foam with velcro to the side walls of the closet so I didn't have to drill or a hole. This was an odd closet, rather narrow, and tall. It may have been a broom closet at one time. The house is about 225 years old.

RE: Friends from the "OOP'S" thread.

Haven't been back here for a while. Been doing computer things mostly on my Droid. Tired of that!
Went to 60 here in Cooper Landing. There is almost too much daylight in AK now. It was light at 6:30 AM and Molli wanted to go outside. I wanted to lock her in the bathroom. The added daytime should have been added only to the evenings.
The hoards have started coming to the Kenai. Traffic was heavy today. I miss the quiet of winter. It is fun watching the idiots and the stupid kids. Took some knives away from a couple of ...4th or 5th graders yesterday. The teacher or chapperone didn't even ask me if I have the authority. Probably because I made the comment that they should be watching the kids, not standing around smoking and gossiping - and having a beer. She just grabbed the kids by the back of the shirts and started a heavy verbal cascade of reprimand. Actually they weren't fighting, just pretending to do so - so they told me.
I am now Chief- along with another member, of the ambulance squad here. We have such a big squad - 3.5 EMTs and some drivers. It keeps me out of trouble though.
I need a vacation. OH! I forgot that I am on one. It has lasted almost 5 years.

RE: Plattsburgh New York to Anchorage Alaska via Canada

NICE photos on your site!!!
We did the trip to Alaska 3 1/2 times. In 2008 we came up here and just didn't go back except to visit in 2010. We have driven cross country using various routes and enjoyed seeing the countryside and tried not to rush. It is such a beautiful drive, especially if you avoid the interstates as much as possible.
We enjoyed spending a day or two in a town or two along the way. We try to avoid crowds when we can. Taking a 2-3 week time to do the trip is the best, more if you have it.
Our first trip took about 4 weeks to go each way. We were newly retired and had not had a real vacation in many years due to my husbnds job.
The mile post is very helpful. We determined what sites we wanted to see and if there were more things that tickled our intrest we sent away for information about those places. We had a whole tote of information when we started out - and used a lot of it.
Late April ane early May are nice too. It can be chilly, but the touist traffic is light.
Hi,
Do you want to see things on the way or just get as fast as possible to Alaska? How long you plan to stay in Alaska? What are your interests?
As the gas in Canada is more expensive than in the US I suggest you drive West in the US till Washington State and then cross to Yukon and to Alaska.
The best months to be in Alaska are from July till September .
I suggest you get this book Mile Post that will help you through your visit.
We visited Alaska for 2 whole months and loved every minute.
If you take gravel roads in Alaska try to do it on Sundays (less heavy trucks on the road) and in good weather.
There are many C.G but due to the short season it gets crowded and if you know your time table I would suggest to reserve a spot.
Take a look at our trip HERE
Take it easy and enjoy the trip and if you have any more questions just drop me a PM.

RE: Plattsburgh New York to Anchorage Alaska via Canada

We have taken this route across the country and enjoy the route more than any of the others we have taken. There are free campgrounds (I can't remember where)and interesting places to stop along the way. We enjoy stopping for one meal a day and hitting a nice "local" spot. The last time we traveled that way the roads were pretty good except for one or two areas and the traffice was much lighter than on the interstate. This route is scenic and relaxing.:C
We used to live near Albany, NY. I miss it, but am now Alaskan at heart.
In 2008 we debated the Canadian route from Albany, NY. 2008 was a high point for gas prices if you remember, so we went US for the most part. We took the NYS Thruway to Buffalo, crossed the border thru Ont. to Flint, Mich., N to the Mackinaw Straits. We stopped & visited Macinac Island. We crossed using rte. 2 which was a low pressure drive, to Montana where we visited Glacier Nat'l Park. The drive north from there was amazing.
The quality of the trip depends on the time you allocate. We took 3 months, one month to (June), one month in AK, & one Mo. returning thru California, visiting the Grand Canyon. We missed so much that we plan on returning in 2013.
A lot of good info can be had in mytripjournal.com. People post their routes & stops to AK.
Just an idea of our fuel costs on our trip towing a 28' 5er with a 3/4 ton diesel. 16K Mi./$8K.
Good luck on your trip & I'm sure it will be enjoyable no matter which route you choose.

RE: U- shape dinnette pro-cons

I would recommend a table and separate chairs...or distributed seating with TV trays.
I agree. We had table and chairs installed in our MH. If you can get the fold away kind, use the floor space for a cot or inflatable mattress.
