RE: Motorhome Fire kills 3

To make matters worse you will have to try and escape while blinded by the smoke and you can't breath because you are choking on the toxic fumes from all of the foam and plastic in a modern RV. If the fire is anything more than a smoldering piece of paper do NOT try to fight it yourself. You only have seconds to get yourself and any passengers out. For those who travel with small dogs and or cats you will not have time to put them in a cage but a pillowcase works well in an emergency. Grab the cat or small dog stuff them in the pillowcase spin the top closed and get out. They will not like it of course but will survive if you do. We always keep an old pillowcase handy when traveling and at home just in case we have to quickly evacuate in an emergency.

RE: Problem with TV reception

One other possibilty is a short in the amplifier antenna head. If you can easily get on the roof; unhook the cable at the antenna and see if your green light still blinks off.

RE: Problem with TV reception

At some point you have the center conductor shorted to ground. It could be at a connector with the braid touching (most likly)or a pinched cable anywhere along the run.

RE: ac freezing low vs high question

As others have said don't be too quick to jump on low freon. These are sealed units. If it is low, it has a leak period. The most likely cause is low airflow. Do the simple things first. Check your filter, look for any blockages, pull the shroud off on the roof and check the coil a lot of dirt and bugs can get in there going down the road. That said there are conditions, generally high humidity, where you have to run in high. The following is a quote from Dometic and most manufactures have similar " Poor or improper air flow, short cycling, a dirty filter or placing the thermostat on its minimum temperature setting and the fan on low speed in high humidity situations can cause evaporator freeze-up." Your unit may be operating fine.

RE: Anybody Add An Electric or Hydralic Auto Leveler on 5th

they can't hold a candle to the Bigfoot Could you elaborate a little? In what way? My Rieco Titan lifts and stabilizes as well as any Bigfoot system that I have seen. I guess the Bigfoot may be be a few seconds faster but for several thousand dollars cheaper I can give up a few seconds and the end result is the same. I do have a few questions about the Bigfoot system or any hydraulic system. What happens if you blow a hydraulic line or pump? Does the unit just fall or are the legs locked in place somehow? In the same scenario is there a back-up method for extending the legs to get hitched up? Are you stuck until repairs are made? I am not criticizing any system but am just curious how they handle it.

RE: Tie Downs On Electric Awnings

It is easy, get a ladder, climb up and look how it attaches to the side. You will probably be shocked as to how flimsy it is. A couple of lag bolts that may or may not be attached to the structure and a piece of plastic running down a tube is the most common method. If it is anchored and a strong enough wind gust hits; something has to give and if you tied it down well it will then rip it lose from from the trailer. In my many years of RVing I have seen it happen several times. I have heard, no proof, that the most common insurance claim is awnings either unfurling going down the road or destroyed by wind when camping.

RE: Anybody Add An Electric or Hydralic Auto Leveler on 5th

Another vote for the Rieco Titan. I just installed it two weeks ago and am on my first trip with it. It works exactly as advertised. I am very pleased. It took me about six or seven hours split over three days to finish the install but I am 65 years old and had no helper. For those who have JT Strongarms or similar stabilizers they fit perfectly with the Rieco Titan system. Since the rear stabilizers remain on, it gives 6 points of ground contact. Although I haven't decided if the rear stabilizers are needed any more as the rear jacks angle out 2 degrees which reduces side to side sway. Another advantage is the ability to lift all four tires off of the ground for maintenance although I must admit that it looked pretty weird to me the first time I did it.

RE: awning repair

What type of repair are you talking about? Does it have holes? Is it delaminating or is it just the color fading? Be specific.

RE: Toad Brake-a-way

Apparently you are looking for a post only from someone who actually had it happen to them. To get a semi factual data you will have to post on multiple forums and then hope that someone who had it happen actually logs on reads your post and decides to reply. And of course the majority of Class A owners read no forums. You will get no true data.

RE: TOTAL CHAOS>>>>

Someone that would kick a dog is not a very nice person, and truly is NOT a dog lover. While I may not meet YOUR definition of a nice person and a dog lover; I will protect my dog just as I would a child or other family member and if it takes a kick or worse so be it.

RE: Keys made at WalMart

Most RV Dealer part departments have the blanks and can make the keys. I have never had any luck finding them anywhere else.

RE: (Winegard SK-3005 TRAV'LER) Back up plan for installation

The dish itself is only a few pounds. The base is almost all of the weight. I would not want to try and get it out of a storage compartment and my back is good.

RE: Non Covered Cause of Loss coverage

First thing only an OEM can offer an extended warranty. What these companies offer is actually a service contract. That may seem like splitting hairs but there is a world of difference if you have to go to court. The majority, maybe not all, of the service contract companies have a terrible track record and you have found the reason. The exclusion of a covered part not being covered if the failure is caused by a non covered part. In the bold print they claim to cover every major component but in the fine print they can eliminate almost everything. A common exclusion is seals not covered. Then when you submit the claim they always maintain it was a seal even if your mechanic swears in writting that it was not a seal. This happened to a friend of mine. If you insist on using one of those companies do some research. If they have recently moved to another state that usually means the Attorney General in their previous state was putting too much pressure on them. Watch out for a name change that is also a warning sign. One more point check to see if your usual repair shop will accept payment from them. Many will not as they have been burnt too many times. Remember claims paid = low profits, claims denied = higher profits

RE: (Winegard SK-3005 TRAV'LER) Back up plan for installation

I am sixty five years old and have installed two units with no problems but I don't have back issues. I did the first by myself and had help on the second. The installation is straight forward but you will definitely need help getting the base unit onto the roof as it is by far the heaviest part. I agree that on the roof is the best idea. It would be very hard to steal it also solves the storage issue. Where would you put it while traveling? It is large and would have to be taken apart to fit in most storage compartments. How would you get it out with a bad back? How are you going anchor it so that it doesn't move when the motor is swinging the dish around. You would be much better off with a manual system rather than an automatic if you are going to put it at ground level anyway.

RE: Do I need awning clamps?

I use a Velcro strap around each arm to make sure it stays closed. Paul Paul unfortunately Velcro, rivets, welding, etc the arms will do nothing to prevent your awning from unfurling while going down the road. It is caused by the unlatch mechanism failing at the tube. It is easy to prove; Velcro your arms, release the latch at the roller tube and pull on the awning. You will see that it will unroll just fine. It only takes a slight unfurling at highway speed and your awning is toast. The only way to prevent it is to lock the tube in place. many devices are sold and have been homebuilt to lock the tube.

RE: Fifth wheel landing gear motor stalls

I suppose it could be several things beside the motor. A binding leg, lack of lubrication, low power, etc. Check the simple things first; make sure that your electrical connections are clean and tight especially at the battery. The ground often can corode. Operate the jacks with the manual crank and see if you can feel binding. Check your owners manual for any required lube.

RE: How long for A/C to cool things down?

A RV air conditioner is nothing like your home unit. It will roughly put out air that is 20 degrees cooler than the input air. The input air is inside your unit (where the filter is) not outside air. How long it takes to cool has many variables such as outside temperature, sun or shade, insulation, etc. Anything that contributes to the heat load of your unit has to be overcome by the air conditioner. You will eventually reach a balance point where the output from the unit matches the heat load and your RV will get no cooler unless the heat load goes down. Some RVs that might be 65 degrees others on a hot sunny day might get it no cooler than 80.

Severe Weather Tips

I have posted this before but since the bad weather season is here it is worth repeating. Whether in your RV or your home; if bad weather hits and you have to take shelter, time is of the essence and pets complicate things. Trying to get a cat into a carrier in the middle of the night takes time at best. A simple thing to use is a pillow case. Grab the cat, stuff them in and get out. The cat won't like it a bit but will at least be as safe as you are. It will work with small dogs also. We always keep a spare pillow case handy for our cats. Of course it won't work with our eighty pound Lab but unlike the cats she will follow me where I lead.

RE: Question RE: Battery Disconnect / Landing Gear

The Rieco Titan is wired directly to the battery. The control box automatically shuts the system off after 15 seconds of no activity. That is why you have to turn it on, LED on, each time you use the system. If the dealer did not give you a manual you can download one here manual. It is the installation and operating manual.
