RE: Memorial Day weekend

Gonna bring everything home from Glamis North KOA this weekend-
Would be cool to see a few friends the following weekend-
As an aside- Riding up the Eastern seaboard on the Acela- why can a train go 150 mph through cities and we can only tow our trailers at 55mph in the middle of nowhere?
Just a thought- could be the Martini's talking.
Miss my good friends who never come to the KOA!!!

RE: Diesel MPG?

Some of you guys reporting 20 mpg or better must have sprinkled fairy dust on your trucks.
My experience- 20 mpg? Sure- When it's on a tow truck.
Here is what I have averaged-
1999 F350 SRW- 17 highway
2002 Duramax DRW- 16.9 highway
2004 F350 SRW- 16.5 highway
2006 Duramax DRW- 17.3 highway
2007.5 Duramax DRW- 16.1 highway
2011 Duramax DRW- 18.1 highway
Now all my trucks are/were 4x4's but how people get 20mpg or better driving an 8500# brick is beyond me. Maybe I need a better calculator. :)

RE: What Does your DRW Truck Weigh?

90 gallons of fuel plus the RDS tank, plus you (I am guessing 200# +/-) is 1000#'s alone.

RE: making the RIDE a little smoother

As you know- air bags and Timbrens do nothing for unloaded ride quality- unless you go with Firestones new air ride system which is a completely different animal.
If you are not hauling a great deal I would consider investing in new quality shocks and running the tires with a less air pressure. Those two things should improve ride quality significantly.
The only other thing you might consider is a set of Sulastics- I have heard they make a big difference but have never tried them.

RE: Pet owners warning

All our Labs have been bit at least once- and they have all had the rattle snack avoidance classes... It's an expensive ordeal. I think the last one was 3 days at the vet and $1500.00 bucks.
Glad your dogs is good!

RE: If it wasn't a bad enough idea already...

Change from diesel to natural gas? We've been trying change for 3 years and that's been an utter disaster.
I think I'll stick with my diesel- Sure the price of fuel stinks but the looks I capture while passing Prius drivers going 55MPH in the fast lane-
PRICELESS!

RE: Grey Tank Sizes

I guess you guys missed the part about leaving no trace behind- no trace literally means no trace! When you go and dump that blue tank where do you think it goes? Do you think any of that ever winds up in a leach system.
As for the legality of letting your gray go- I could care less what the government says. The government has been trying to outlaw common sense through legislation for decades. That's the biggest problem with this country- common sense has just gone out the door.
What I can tell you- anyone who camps right behind me never knows I was there- Even if I was there a hour before they arrived there.
Oh- And we don't eat spaghetti. But I will be happy to pour you a very nice glass of Chianti.
Cheers!

RE: Grey Tank Sizes

If you are boon docking (and I don't mean at Walmart or next to a stream or lake) I don't see any reason not to just let your gray slowly trickle into the ground. Between absorption and evaporation you can let it go at such a rate that it doesn't even puddle.
Letting some gray water leach into the ground from the surface is no different than what a leach line does under ground- just make sure there are no food or other particles left behind. I scoop any of that up and toss it in a trash bag with our other stuff.
We leave every site in better shape than we find it- and that includes watering the plants. :)

RE: Pulling 40' toy hauler

I pulled my old triple axle TH with an F350 SRW for several years and I was very comfortable with the load. With the jeep in the back it was 18k loaded and I hauled it all over Baja...
Pull the current rig (47 feet/22k loaded) with my 3500 and have no issues. I think all of the current 3500 trucks are very capable.

RE: Under unit air conditioning

I have never understood why it is so hard for us to keep our units at 70 degrees during the Summer but a Refer truck can keep frozen food frozen in 125 degree heat.
IMO- Those basement units were marginal. Certainly not strong enough to cool a 40' unit. I have two 15k roof mounted units and am gonna add a 3rd.

RE: Truck puller w/4 wheel drive or 2 wheel drive

Since you are buying a toy hauler you are likely going to camp in some areas that are at least slightly off the beaten path. That means some dirt roads which may have soft patches/areas of sand or mud. 99% of the time you won't need it to get through those areas- but when you need it you sure are glad you have it. Also, if you get stuck- no one else may be able to get around your rig until you get unstuck.
I would never buy a truck without 4x4- the convenience and safety are worth the price of admission for me.
4 wheel drive is like a woman or a lawyer. When you need it/one you really need it!

RE: The real difference between a 250 and 350srw

For that size trailer any F250 will be more than sufficient.
That is not that big/heavy of a trailer- period.

RE: Apparently 3/4 ton pickups CAN tow anything

I actually think people who have never pulled a trailer, retire, and buy an rv are a far bigger threat than over loaded trucks.
That is not an excuse to over load a truck-
However, I would much rather drive next to a really experienced driver in an overloaded rig than an inexperienced "gray hair" towing a properly set-up 40 foot fifth wheel.

RE: 2008 F450 Powerstroke 4x4 dually w/ 4:88 gears

The only way a 4.88 geared truck (no matter what modifications) gets 17 mpg is on the back of a tow truck.
I drove a 2008 4.88 geared 450 for a weekend as I was going to buy one- 12 mpg unloaded is a stretch based on my experience- maybe if you live in the country with very little stop/go traffic and really take it easy on her.
It is an awesome vehicle but don't expect to get great mileage!

RE: Honda CRF450X or Yamaha WR450F

My Honda's (450 R's) have been excellent- With regular oil/air filter changes the red bikes are pretty good. Having said that- I am done kick starting a bike.
Gonna pick up a new KTM this year- efi, lights, starter, plate- how can you resist?

RE: looking for Mammoth dry camping

There is a ton of dry camping in Mammoth- Almost any dirt road off the 395 between Mammoth and June will have excellent camping spots. PM if you want a few recommendations.
Love the riding/fishing/beauty around Mammoth but the chiggers/noseeums are so bad I probably won't dry camp in Mammoth area again. I am not a person who gets eaten by the bugs at all so when I say they are bad- I mean they are really, really bad. With the mild winter we had it could be even worse this year.
After doing Mammoth the last two years we are headed back to Utah- no chiggers. I promised my wife that if we do Mammoth riding again it will be out of the Westin.
Maybe it is better in Browns Campground- they may spray the area to keep them down-

Does anyone really think UPS would keep a driver who was not safe?
