RE: A Question Of Physics

I don't know how it will affect towing, but I do know that your tow vehicle will use more fuel with the tanks full because of the extra weight.

RE: dodge ram 1500 shortbed 5.5 hitch for fifth wheel

Love this forum. I learn so much. Like, this thread. Now I know why we have all those truck weigh stations all over the country. Guys with bald retreads and no trailer brakes would be hauling a hundred thousand pounds down the roads having convince themselves it's all cool! :S Those truck weigh stations are strickly for commercial vehicles. I know of no law against exceeding a truck's recommended GVWR or tow capacity for a private personal vehicle.

RE: dodge ram 1500 shortbed 5.5 hitch for fifth wheel

5'5" is too short even for a slider. I have a 5'5" AND a 12K Superglide and it works perfectly. :R OP, here you go. This guy is using basically the same set-up your asking about except his truck is a Ford and yours is a Dodge. Although his trailer may be a little heavier.

RE: Can I tow a Chaparral Lite 275RLS 5th wheel.

Check out the Rockwood Lite, I pull it with my Nissan Titan. +1 I have an '06 Silverado Ext Cab with the 5.3 liter with towing package and tow a '08 rockwood 8265S 5th wheel. The trailers dry weight is 6,750 lbs with a dry pin weight of less than 1100 lbs. My wife really liked the Chaparral Lite 268RLE's floor plan and it was advertised as half ton towable, but was about 500-600 lbs heavier than the Rockwood. I felt the Rockwood's weight was about the limit my truck could handle. You truck isn't a HD is itHow long have you been towing this camper and is your truck a Z71 I've been towing it with this truck since we bought the camper new in Feb., '08. Just pulled it two weeks ago to Arlington, TX & back (about a six hour trip one way). The truck did just fine. I never pull in overdrive and always use the tow/haul mode. And no, the truck is not a Z71. It's a 2WD LT model.

RE: Slider hitch with 6.5 ft bed?

I have a 6.5' bed and use a non slider hitch. When I installed the hitch, I did put it about 1" - 1.5" behind the axle and I have never had a problem.

RE: Always Something

My slide toppers were like that after the dealer installed them when the trailer was new. Turns out it was nothing in the wall up there for the screws to go into. Took it back to the dealer after about a month of having the trailer and they used pop rivits where the screws were and all was well.

RE: Are 5'ers more convenient than TT's?

I like the taller inside ceilings in a 5th wheel and the ease of hitching up compared to a TT. One inconvienience for me with the 5th wheel that no one else has mentioned is the 5th wheel is harder to back up than a TT. It takes some getting use to. A TT responds as soon an you turn the steering wheel, whereas a 5th wheel has a lag time from when you turn the steering wheel to when the trailer responds to the turn.

RE: Guitars and RVs

I usually take my Peavey electric with a small vintage tube amp. I transport them in my pickup, not in the 5th wheel. It is a very nice inexpensive electric guitar. I would never bring my vintage Les Paul camping. Too much chance that it might get damaged or stolen.

RE: Towing 5th wheel with new 2011 F150

PB, 365 horses is 365 horses, doesn't matter if they are diesel or gas. Love the torque of a diesel engine, but it is $8,000 more new, and the fuel is 10+% higher. I am pulling 10,000 pounds with a 6 liter and 300 horses/ 360 ft lbs of torque, I do ok, I would do better with another 65 horses and 60 pounds of torque. 20% better. I am a big block guy, there is no substitute for cubic inches in speed or towing, but the numbers don't lie, and I think Ford has changed everything in trucks. If you are going to drive the truck daily with only some trips towing, I think it is good choice. If 90+% of the trucks use is towing and you put 10,000, 20,000, or more miles a year on it, then the diesel is a no brainer. Neil +1 And I'll add: Some folks just like a smaller, sportier truck to use as a daily driver, like a F150 or Chevy 1500.

RE: Recommendations on a small lite weight 5th for a F150

We tow a 25 ft. 1999 Jayco 5th wheel (dry wt of 5,200) with a half-ton Chevy with the 5.3 V-8 and that works fine but I think you may have a tough time finding 1 light enough for your truck. That motor isn't the biggest V-8 available is it? I wouldn't try to tow any 5th wheel with a half-ton that does not have the biggest or close to it motor available. The OP is referring to the new F-150 Econo Boost. That is actually a turbo or super charged V6, and it will out pull most gas V8's that are currently available.

RE: Recommendations on a small lite weight 5th for a F150

We have a '08 Rockwood 8265S and tow it with a '06 Chevy 1500 Ext. Cab with a 6.5' bed. The truck has the 5.3 liter with the tow package. The trailer is 6,750 lbs dry weight the way it left the factory. My Chevy handles the trailer surprisingly well, although I'm maxed out or over by a small amount on some specs. We really like this trailer's floor plan because with the two small opposing slides instead of one super slide, it creats so much room in the living area of the camper. Plus, it puts more weight in the rear of the trailer, thus reducing the pin weight. I just keep my truck in 3rd gear with the tow/haul button engaged when towing, and the truck does fine. Rockwood/Flagstaff trailers are quality built units with full aluminum frames (floor, roof, & walls) and plywood (not OSB) flooring.

RE: Towing a 5th with the new F150

Just as an FYI the 5th wheels I was looking at were: Cougar 244RLS GVRW 8300 Hitch Weight 1028 Copper Canyon FWRLS GVRW 10120 Hitch Weight 1320 The F150 with the 3.73 axle can tow up to 11200, and they bed payload configured with the crew cab 6.5 bed is 1860 pounds On paper it should work, but I defer to you with experience Your wife, stuff, accessories on the truck, hitch and anything you weigh over 150lbs will take away from that 1860lbs of payload capacity. Both those hitch weights look like empty weights but I figured 20% tongue weights on the campers GVWR coming in with 1660lbs on the 1st one and a tad over 2000lbs on the Copper Canyon. Re the 11K lb tow capacity of the F150 that is almost always based on a 10% tongue weight of a traditional bumper pull, not a 5er. Have to disagree with you there. The 11K tow capacity is not based on what kind of trailer the truck will be towing. It means the truck can tow 11K lbs. whether it be TT or 5th wheel. I know my Chevy 1500 owners manual gives towing specs for TT & 5th wheels, and no where does it reduce the towing capacity for a 5th wheel compared to a TT. Oh yeah. Superduty 123, you should be fine with either of the trailers you listed. Your new F150 should handle either of them easily.
