RE: F 150 5.4 tapping "solution".

Sounds like piston slap to me. My '98 F150 had it and I got a new motor under warranty. It was most noticable in cold temps.

RE: 5.3 Up Grades

I strongly recommend splash guards... wish I had installed them.
I'm happy with the stock P-metric tires and will replace with P's when these wear out.
While I have been happy with the stock tires when not towing, you can get a "wiggle" or unsteady feel (hard to describe) with higher tongue weights. I would think with your pop up the tw isn't high enough to notice this from the weaker sidewalls compared to LT tires. Which that means cheaper prices! Lol
It's not to late for the splash guards!
Chris
Actually, my camper is a pop-up truck camper and it puts 1500# on the rear axle. The boat adds another 100# or so. I leave the camper on all summer and don't experience the unstable feeling like I did with my older/smaller/skinnier P's on the F150. I think the size (265mm) and relatively high load rating is why they work OK.
Any suggestions on where to buy the splash guards? I usually buy from GMpartsdirect.

RE: 5.3 vs 6.2 on a Chevy 1500

I wouldn't worry about the rear drum brakes on the 5.3L equipped truck.
Mine works fine towing our 3500# boat and hauling a 1500# truck camper, and my boat trailer doesn't have trailer brakes.

RE: Chevrolet 4-speed transmission... how to improve?

Your 4L60E is a very reliable transmission, but you do need to keep the fluid changed, at least every 50k miles.
You probably already have a transmission cooler. Does your DIC have a tranny temp display?

RE: What to leave home, supplies or wife?

I truly appreciate what you're talking about because I complained about the same issue prior to each camping trip, until I lost my DW to cancer. If I could get her back, I would let her load anything she wanted in the camper.

RE: Silverado Crew Cab 5.3

You'll like it. The 5.3L/6spd is very nice.

RE: Heavy Pop-Up vs. Light Hard-Side

I've camped in 50mph winds many times with my pop-up, and the flexible portion never flaps or vibrates (btw, it's not canvas either).
Still, I expect the hardside to have better sound & thermal insulation, at the expense of reduced fuel economy.

Thanks for the detailed report.
The weight is disappointing, but you have lots of goodies.
