RE: Old School

I remember glass bottles with the screw-on spouts. They were filled from a larger barrel that had a crank that I turned to pump the oil into the bottle. Another of my early (age 5-6) jobs was to drain the "used" bottle into another so that by the end of the day I had another bottle of motor olil that was 100% profit! That was my pay.

RE: 1st trip to Chiropractor...Scared the snot out of me

My chiropractor relied on original X-rays taken more than a year prior. At that time, I didn't know any better; I do now.

And if not for my neurosurgeon, I would have been in a wheelchair thanks to a chiropractor who was "adjusting" a disk that neither of us knew had ruptured.

RE: Want to Try SW FL Next Year

X2 on everything that Dave has said, plus more in Lee County!
In addition to all the activities he listed, there is a plethora of great restaurants and good entertainment such as
Broadway Palms Dinner Theatre and Lee County Parks and Rec always needs volunteers whether it be picking up litter in the county parks and waterways or assisting with the Florida Senior Games.
Several service organizations also welcome volunteers especially when the snowbirds return.
And, yes, traffic can be heavy at times, but it doesn't take long to learn the alternative routes. (Shhh, but US 41 and I-75 aren't the only north/south routes.)

RE: Safe Travels Snowbirds!

We have another 35 days to enjoy Florida weather*. By that time, Pennsylvania should be delightful.
*Think sunsets on the beach, the resort pool, less crowded roads and restaurants, evening drives (with the top down) to Dairy Queen!

One dollar!? Florida now charges $2 for a Powerball ticket. With Powerplay, it becomes a $3 ticket.

RE: I'm not a Snowbird, but.............

When you left Florida (or anywhere that is too cold for you) to go to the warmer climes (Mexico in your case), you became a snowbird. When you leave the summer heat of Florida to go to cooler climes, you become a sunbird. It's as simple as that.

RE: Opossum Dishes

It's also easy to live-trap groundhogs, but once in a while, you'll find a skunk in that trap. Since they eat the grubs and other insect larvae, I release them.

RE: Opossum Dishes

Roast a 'possum the same as a groundhog.
On Saturdays, when I was a kid, I would travel over the mountain to a local farmer who wanted the groundhogs cleared out of his pastures. I would shoot four to six and deliver them to my Uncle Charlie. He could tell the juveniles (more tender than the older ones) by squeezing their thighs. He would field dress (skin and gut) them and put them in a bucket of salt water overnight to get rid of the gaminess.
The next morning, Aunt Gertie would rinse the groundhog in fresh water and fill the body cavity with seasoned stuffing. She would then roast the groundhog for Sunday dinner. Sorry, but I never asked the times or temperatures.

RE: If you could have one car back

1932 Model A Sports Coupe
1937 Straight Eight Pontiac Sedan
1950 Chrysler Highlander Convertible
1950 Willy Jeepster (Still have this one!)
Am I getting old? I don't even know and can't even visualize half of these newer cars that are being listed.

RE: Florida Getaway

If you want "warm" and "loaded with more activities than you can handle," then Imperial Bonita Estates is one of the places to consider.
There are many great (and affordable) places throughout Florida that fit the bill. Don't rule out the interior of the state. Just make sure -- if you really want "warm" -- that you are not far north of Lake Okeechobee. Even the Tampa area was too chilly for us.
Ever hear of Estero? I have a friend in a private park there that is looking for six-month tenants in a nice private resort that doesn't show up on "campground" searches. PM for info.

RE: "First Year Snowbird"

the beaches are open to everyone(unlike FL)
Larry, the above is one of those "not totally true" statements that I mentioned in the PM. Statements like these are sour grapes. They make the winter Texans feel better. Of course, there are private beaches belonging to exclusive clubs and associations. That's life. You want it; earn it.
On the other hand, there are so many open state, county, and public beaches that one need never worry about being excluded from this actvity. Maybe the argument is having to pay the parking meter at a parking lot adjacent to those beaches. When the emphasis is on "cheap" one can find any number of excuses...

RE: Florida baking

Actually, Tom, there were three good clues, and all three had to do with controlling humidity: AC which cools and dehumidifies, refrigerate (Same as AC), and air-tight packaging (same principle).

RE: "First Year Snowbird"

Larry, When you get back from Texas, try a bit farther south than Davenport.
In Fort Myers, there are several nice resorts either on or near both the Caloosahatchee and the Orange Rivers -- with direct access to the Gulf, of course.
And, in Bonita Springs there is Imperial Bonita Estates* whose southern boundary is the Imperial River which flows into Estero Bay, or Citrus Park which is just two miles northeast. *canoes and kayaks only; larger vessels launch at the US 41 boat launch four miles away.
PS We don't have the wind that the RGV does!
