RE: auxiliary tank

I just had a 76 gallon tank installed in our Dodge Dually. It came with the fuel pump - fuel filter / water separator, and wired switch to the dash. Not a gravity fed. It is connected to fill through the normal fill neck when the switch is on.
It works great. Fits under the bed rails. I can still use my roll up bed cover. No need to pull over to transfer the fuel. Just flip the switch when driving. I now have 16 hours of drive time. It's going to be great not having to worry where to stop for fuel.
Price was $1174 installed. Truck City in Indiana. http://duallydepot.com/

RE: Fridge Noise

If your fridge vents on the side instead of the roof, most likely you have a cooling fan installed. It would be thermostatically controlled. You would have two vents on the side one on top the other below which is a access door. The upper vent is where the fan would be.
Just take it off and look down inside. You will see it (or them).

RE: Chevy vs. Dodge

Which engine has been around longer with few changes? Which engine is easier to work on? Which engine has less engine parts? Which engine has stronger components?
The Cummins wins the engine reliability battle IMHO. The Dodge trans is not the best of the two, but not bad.You can fix that cheaper than replacing a motor.

RE: Questions on aux fuel tank

The only caveat I'd add is that with full tanks, that's a lot of weight.
1065 total fuel weight for both tanks. Additional 816.5 for the tank. I have figured out the pin weight, passengers, etc. I will still be under by a couple hundred pounds on GVWR.
However I'm considering a 51 gallon combo tank as well.

Questions on aux fuel tank

I'm consider installing a 115 gallon auxiliary fuel tank to our 3500 dually. When not towing the truck will sit for quite some time particularly in the cold months.
Will 150 gallons ( main tank 35 and aux 115)keep for extended periods( 6 months or more)? Are there any issues with condensation? I assume the consensus would be keeping the tanks full to eliminate any condensation. Are there any additives that should be added?
Are there any here that could share their stories or thoughts, good and bad? I hate to make a $1300 investment that might cause more problems than the benefits I'm looking for.
Thanks!

RE: Trip from Michigan to Florida Keys

Thanks for all the reply's. We narrowed it down to about three campgrounds in the keys. Two are booked already and one didn't have very good reviews on the web. We wanted to be as close to Key West as possible.
So we put our name on a waiting list (28 pages) at Blue Water Key Resort. In the meantime we decided if we can't get something there, we would start out at Top Sail in Santa Rosa beach. We were able to get a pull through site. I heard it was a nice state park with beach access.
We'll finish off in Disney for a week and head back home for the snow :(

Trip from Michigan to Florida Keys

We are considering a trip the end of this year to Key West, just after Christmas. Couple of things we are interested in. What do you snowbirds do when traveling down. Do you stay in hotels until you reach a warmer climate? Are there campgrounds open along the way? It looks like a 1500 mile drive. About a 3-4 day drive?
Also any feedback on campgrounds along the Keys. We considered Boyds in Key West, but after reading some reviews it doesn't look that great?
How about Blue Water Key RV resort? It looks like it's only 15 miles from Key West.
Thanks!!

Don't know about your trailer. But we too purchased a Cameo last July. Our experience was positive.

RE: What is the etiquette??

We had a very similar experience last year. Understandably some people might have good reasons why they might be late, some just don't care what other people think and don't plan for things beyond what matters to them.
It happened to us at 11:30pm. Old Ford that rattled like it was going to explode. To top it off he had the silencer ring removed and every time he hit the gas it sounded like a B52 on takeoff. He reserved a site that wasn't made for his 40' toy hauler and couldn't back it into the campsite normally ( he tried for 1/2 hour). Then the banging on our door. So I'm scrambling to find some clothes as I figure he finally hit our truck.
They were trying to fit the fiver in sideways and needed to cross in front of our fiver. I moved our truck trying to put a end to it all. About 15 minutes later they unhooked. What do you know, he parks his truck right in front of our fiver where my truck was. So I had to get back up and let him know he better find another spot.
It took these clowns (two families together, one brought the boat)until 2:00am to quiet down. They had to launch the boat in the marina and return with the boat trailer don't you know.
Some people are just jerks.

RE: Refrigerator Trip

Most will run on propane. The valve must be open and battery hooked up. The control board still need 12v power on the fridge to run when not hooked to shore power. It will run disconnected from the truck as long as the trailer batteries are connected.

Ahh, those RV covers.

We have always debated getting a RV cover for our fiver. We just store ours outside over the years. Seen too many get all torn up. We had heavy winds last week up north. There were 4 fifth wheels and a motorhome all with new covers this last fall.
All of them had tears or torn to shreads after the winds subsided. I just wonder what damage it did to the finish on the trailers.
Not going to be on our wish list.

RE: Service dealer lying to me

It happened to us with our last camper (warranty work) and we purchased from the same dealer. 3 months, ordered parts yadda yadda, never happened. It was there so long it got broken into. That was the last straw, dealer wouldn't fix the damage done on their lot.

RE: M & M Camping Center, Trenton MI - any thoughts?

They are a very small outfit. Their shop can't hold much more than a pop-up or very small travel trailer by what I saw. There larger campers probably get worked on outside.
We were inquiring about buying a Cameo from them last summer. The owner was very slow in responding to questions and a quote. We ended up purchasing ours from Terrytown in Grand Rapids, MI. We got a much better deal there and better response.

Rafting in Ohiopyle PA / Laurel Highlands

We are considering a trip here mid June. Has anyone rafted here. Are there other things to do? There will be my BIL/wife and boys 8 & 10 yrs camping with us too. So that limits us to the middle rapids only. Is it worth driving 8 hours from Michigan just for the one rapid? The boys are to young for the lower rapids (they claim you need to be 12).
I understand there is the Laurel Caverns as well. Is there a amusement park nearby? Any nice campgrounds? I've looked at this website, just curious if anyone has been there. It's a bit of a drive, I just want to make sure it is worth the trip.

RE: 3.73 VS 4.10 gearing

We have a 2010 Cummins dually with the 4:10. Our other truck with the same engine had the 3:73. It would dog and downshift on slight inclines going 60-65 mph. Our camper is 15,000 lbs loaded.
With the 4:10 it doesn't dog like the 3:73 did. Pulls right up hills where the 3:73's would need to drop a gear.
I have seen about a 1 mpg drop in mileage. It definitely pulls off the line towing the trailer better.
Towing heavy my choice easily is the 4:10.

RE: Michigan's new prosperity

Well since our current governor seems to enjoy pushing the tax burden and issues off the backs of the middle class, I'm not surprised. He just changed the business tax for 2012. He eliminated over 1.7 billion in tax money from business. So he needs to make some of it back.
You're correct, business was great in the manufacturing industry the last two years here. So why lower the tax now? Was it needed? It's been proven, they won't reinvest it.

RE: Differences between towing a 5th wheel and a bumper pull?

Don't believe that 5th wheels tow better. With a top level hitch (Hensley etc.) many say TT pull better. The rest you read is true. 5th wheels cut corners and react slower backing up. There is also the bounce factor - that is why the sell air hitches etc.
From our own experience we don't share your opinion. Had both, the fiver tows way more stable. Towing with the weight over the axle makes a better towing platform and more stable vs the weight at the rear bumper wanting to push the truck around in heavy winds and passing semi's.
A fiver is way easier to hook up and unhook. The differences in turning and backing up just takes a little getting use to.
What bounce factor are you referring to? I have never had a bounce problem. There is a chugging issue with the slight play in the hitch. That can be resolved with a Mor Ryde pin box.
