RE: '02 V-10 Tranny Leak

Put the appropriate transmission dye into the fluid and check for leaks with a black light. That's what the dealer should've done. Had a automatic trans rebuilt a few years ago and I reinstalled it and it started leaking a few days later. I brought the trans that was then in my van back to the rebuilder who drove it onto a lift and fooled around with it for about 5 minutes and then returned it to me and said it was fixed. The leak didn't reappear for about 3-4 days and I went back to the trans rebuilder again. He again did the same thing to "repair" it and then returned it to me declaring it "fixed" again. Well, you know what happened after about three days later..... I crawled under the van to check to see where the leak was coming from myself and saw that the shift shaft was the culprit and that the trans guy had been putting a glob of very heavy grease around the seal to stop the leak for a few days and also to discourage me from returning! I returned though and threatened him with some very unkind words!!!

RE: ford triton10 transmission or chassis noise

I chased a loud squeal/whine for years and almost gave up until my wife said it sounded like it was coming from the galley sink! Of course you know what I said about that. Turns out the noise was from the sink which had a dry trap and the air, as I was traveling, was blowing across the vent pipe on the roof like blowing across a Coke bottle. Keeping the stopper in the sink as we were traveling took care of our problem. By the way, the noise only occurred at highway speeds.

RE: Drum Brake Problem

I agree with DrQuick. The rear brake cylinders have to be either rebuilt or replaced each time a brake job is done otherwise they have a tendency to leak or jam up and cause erratic braking. If goodyear already replaced or serviced the brake cylinders, make sure they used name brand parts and not some cheapo stuff. I had the same problem you had and finally corrected it with new cylinders. There's an outside chance that the proportioning valve is rusted and frozen internally. I doubt it though

RE: New tires for 2003 Pleasure Way

I have Toyo Open Country also and they run fine but I really wanted the Toyo Open Country HT Tuff Duty which is engineered for high torque diesel truck duty. Unfortunately they weren't available at the time. The Toyo company is very accommodating and helpful by the way. Whatever you do, do not consider Hankook tires. Their tires are dreadful and have a high failure rate in the class B duty rv use. The only thing worse than their tires is their total lack of customer support. It is non existent!! Been there done that!

RE: Terlet Help....

Not sure what model Thetford toilet you have but on mine which is in a class b rv, to replace the seal you just open the slide valve, reach into the opening where the stuff goes down and grab the seal and pull. A new seal was very cheap even though I don't remember how much and I think the whole project took me about 4 minutes or less. Again, maybe your model Thetford is different than mine and might need to be removed before the seal is replaced. Why don't you call Thetford and ask and they may just send you a new seal free. They've done that in the past for me.

RE: Exasperating Gas Leak

Is your propane level getting low? If it is, you may be smelling the mercaptans that is put in the propane so that you can smell it. It smells just like a leaking propane line.

RE: Safe use of electric space heaters

My problem with the electrically operated space heaters is that most of them have lousy thermostats and one has to periodically get out of bed and adjust them or you either freeze or roast. Before you settle on one, make sure you're happy with the performance and it's ability to regulate temperature.

RE: Need help - LP Detector won't reset - UPDATE

Look in your fuse panel for the 12v system. There is probably a dedicated one that is labeled as such for the lp detector. For now, just pull it and you'll be good to go.

RE: pleasureway excel leak

Can you be a bit more specific as to your two problem areas like exactly where do you see any dripping water and exactly what you consider a storage locker? I'm thinking that since your outside shower and related plumbing is above your city water connection that maybe you might look there as a starter. Can't help you with the leaking locker issue yet. If possible, pictures would help a lot. I have a 2005 PW and should be the same setup as yours.

RE: Septic Problem

I also used to work for the health department and have dealt with many septic systems. I totally agree with Francesca Knowles and feel the that the pumper guy is either misinformed and is spreading an old wives tale or just new on the job.

RE: Backfiring Onan 2800 Microlite

Generator Jim: I try to run the generator for it's exercise after adding the Stabil (actually I wait a couple of weeks). If any of the 2 other problems (timing or bent key in crankshaft) was the cause of backfiring, would the generator run fine the rest of the time until a prolonged storage? Would ,as Bushey 562 suggested, a plugged muffler cause backfiring? What would plug a muffler? Soot from running too rich?

RE: Backfiring Onan 2800 Microlite

Riggsp: Bought a new plug and checked the gap before installing but it was right on so I didn't mess with it. I didn't change plug because the generator was backfiring. I'm just a bit anal and want everything in my favor when I'm on the road and, what the heck, plugs are cheap.

RE: Backfiring Onan 2800 Microlite

Handbasket: 8oz of Stabil/ 20 gal of gasoline. I put the Stabil into a gas can and then fill it with 6gallons of gasoline at a gas station. Shake the mixture good and then pour into the chassis gas tank. Let it sit for a couple of weeks and then try to start the generator.

Backfiring Onan 2800 Microlite

I have a Onan 2800 Microlite generator in my 2005 PW and occasionally it backfires VERY loudly when I'm trying to start it. Once it's started, it runs fine and doesn't seem to have any issues after that. Now that this has happened a few times, I think it's related to my addition of Stabil fuel stabilizer prior to storing the vehicle for a period of time. Once on the road, the generator runs fine and doesn't act up again until it's been put into storage with the addition of Stabil. I should mention that the spark plug is new, the air cleaner is clean, the altitude adjustment is correct and the oil level is also correct. Anybody else have this issue? Again, it runs fine once it's started it just wants to backfire sometimes after it's been stored for a short while.

RE: RT Batteries Low Specific Gravity Reading

I had an Interstate group 24 that came with my rv when it was new and it didn't last a year before it went completely dead. I now have 2 Lifeline AGM batteries and have had them for about 3 years without any problems.

RE: Problem with one neighbor cat

In our city the animal control will do nothing about barking dogs other than to send out a warning to the owners. If the problem continued, you, the suffering, victimized neighbor, had to get the other neighbors to sign a petition and eventually do a "citizens arrest" yourself. There are limits to the number of dogs one may possess but you can have any number of cats you want even though they're not neutered, not licensed, no rabies shots and the leash laws do not apply. Wonder why some of us who are victims of uncaring, irresponsible pet owners are outraged? I've personally gone next door and down the street to talk to neighbors about their cats that are defecating on my property, tearing my screen doors, scratching the paint on my vehicles when they sleep on the hood and tops, and their male cats urinating on my front door and porch. I've talked to neighbors about their dogs that bark throughout the day and night and have lost countless hours of sleep and had to wake up at 6:30 AM half dead from lack of sleep and still go to work. One neighbor told me after I complained about her 4 dogs that would lunge at the fence and bark like crazy every time I was outside in my yard or even getting into or out of my car that she would "talk to my dogs". This screwball was an attorney! The result of all my contacts with the neighbors about their pets was that I'm now the enemy because "dogs bark, that's what they're supposed to do" and " My cats are so wonderful because they're good 'mousers' so that's why we have 5 and you can't contain a cat, they come and go when they want. Are you sure it was one of my cats that scratched the paint on your car? You know a lot of other neighbors have cats that are loose. Why are you blaming one of mine?" My wife and I decided we'd had it and were going to move to another city that had more responsible animal laws and take a hit on the expenses of moving and selling our house not to mention having to look for new jobs. One day I woke up thinking why should I have to move, why don't I be more aggressive about taking care of the problem on my own and not depending on the worthless animal control and the clueless @!!!%!!*& neighbors? SOOOO, I purchased a VERY powerful ultrasonic bark controller and emitter and aimed it towards the problem areas and viola!!! The screwball neighbor with the 4 barking dogs MOVED ( instead of me), another neighbor with the 24 hour barker realized what I had and got rid of the dog. The cats avoid not only my property but the entire area because they're more sensitive to the ultrasound than dogs. A side benefit is that the skunks and raccoons also keep their distance! I need to clarify that the ultrasound unit I have can be manually, motion or sound (barking) activated depending on one's needs and if set a certain way humans cannot hear it.

RE: shut off valve for gasoline generator

Generator Jim, I took off the air cleaner and looked around and behind everything and the only wire I could find was so tight I couldn't read any number off of it. It was white and just below the air cleaner housing. If this was the wire you're referring to, there was no way I'd have enough slack to tap into it for a switch. I'm trying to figure out why, if there is an electric fuel pump in this system, it takes so much cranking before it'll start. Kinda like it seems to need to fill the carburetor with gas first which should be pretty quick with an electric pump. This is what I'm used to anyway in cars. Pretty much this system seems to run like it has a mechanical fuel pump. The Onan manuals don't list an electric fuel pump nor do they tell you to check it when trouble shooting. The manuals only make a vague reference to the fact that the "pump" has a safety valve to keep it from being flooded if the main vehicle tank pressure is too high. Also the electrical schematics do not show any wiring to a fuel pump. I'm at a point now where I'm going to let sleeping dogs lie and instead start using the carburetor bowl drain feature which will accomplish what I want.

RE: High gas tank pressure, Ford V-10.

I had the same problems with my 1989 Ford E350. It lasted for many trips until it started hesitating and barely running. Turns out the O2 sensors(2) were bad and loading up the catalytic converter until it was red hot and not only heating up the gas tank but also the propane tank. Finally the converter disintegrated and plugged up to a point I was only getting 4 mpg. I think I would get your rv into your dealer and have them check out the vehicle. It could be a very dangerous situation waiting to happen. Oh yeah, I did the release the gas pressure in the tank also.

RE: shut off valve for gasoline generator

Yes I do have an Onan 2.8 Microlite. From what I can tell from reviewing the manufacturer's literature the fuel pump is not electrical. There is almost zero room inside the compartment that houses the generator so it's looking like I will have to have some sort of an external connection for this valve. The reason I want to have this valve in place is obvious and since I live in Sacramento, CA., it seldom freezes and almost never snows plus I park the rv inside of a dedicated garage which is very dry, I figured this approach is a no brainer.
