RE: Ultralite vs. well, not Ultralite!

Okay guys, with that said then....what brand is known for being a "quality" ultralite trailer? I know, they all have lemons now and then, but generally speaking, who has been known to make a nice ultralite?
Models we considered.
Keystone Passport
Keystone Bullet
Forest River Surveyor
Coachmen Freedom Express
Forest River Rockwood

RE: Ultralite vs. well, not Ultralite!

If you love the trailer, get it, you'll always be happy with it. Towing with a 3/4 ton just will make the experience much easier.
In your situation with five in your family and a dog, it's the payload you need in the tow vehicle.
As mentioned, you can never have too much tow vehicle. I'm maxed out with my 1/2 ton. Towing is fine but I have to pay attention and watch the weights.
And with an Excursion, slapping a 9000 lb trailer behind it will be a lot like slapping a 6000 lb trailer behind an Expedition (at capacity or over again).

RE: Roof Vent Installed in Bunkhouse!

Talked with the DW last night about this mod and it looks like we are going to put one in over the kids bunk. Should make for a more comfortable sleeping area when boondocking in the heat. Thanks for the idea.
Go for it. It really wasn't a tough job. Up and down the ladder was the most work.
Anyone who has a bunkhouse without a vent knows how stuffy they get even with the A/C on. Best mod to date for me.

RE: 3rd vehicle strictly for towing? Need advice.

Pretty much impossible for a family of 5 + a big dog to travel in a crew cab pick up. I'd look for a V10 Excursion as mentioned many times. Then you can get the heavier trailer you want.
something like this if well maintained by previous owner you should be able to pull another 70K out of it. As a dedicated tow vehicle, that would be a very long time.
Of course you may end up driving that X in the winter, they are pretty awesome.

RE: Pricing new F150?

That looks like a good price considering the HD Payload and options listed. The HD Payload isn't easy to find in stock.

RE: correct number of links for tensioner

WD Hitch Set Up Instructions
There are a lot of variables to set up a hitch correctly. Great instructions on this link.

RE: Roof Vent Installed in Bunkhouse!

Nice job! Where did you tap the power at?
The ceiling light. It is spliced into a main 12V line. I took off the factory connectors, hooked up the fan wire correctly and cranked on some wires nuts.
Same deal in the front bedroom.
Now running two fantastic fan 8500R models. Hmmm what to do with the bathroom vent? :)

RE: Tow Vehicle Question

Set up the hitch correctly following the link posted above and add a friction sway control bar.

RE: Is it time for new tires?

160 miles isn't bad if you're not driving fast and the temperature isn't 90+ degrees. Inflate them to max psi.

RE: buying another TT

I'd say the Surveyor or Dutchman have the best bathrooms.
Where's the 4 year old going to sleep?

RE: running air conditioner while towing

If you cannot run your truck A/C while towing you have a problem with your truck or it is overloaded.
I agree.

RE: Is it time for new tires?

It would be a good preventative measure to replace the tires. They're a no name brand and 6 years old now.
One blowout/seperation can do a lot of damage to a trailer. And you really don't want to lay on the tar changing a tire when you could be at the campground. :)

RE: WD HItch and Sway Control Setup

Taking off the sway control is a good idea to find the noise. You can really quiet down a standard WD hitch by greasing where it goes into the hitch head. Also grease on the ball help keep it quiet. You can pick up a ball cover for the hitch.
The friction bar will make noise, it's how it works. Please crank the handle as much as you can and park it parallel to the bar itself. Take it off when you plan make severe angles, backing up normally it's no need to remove it.

RE: Windy towing!

It seems every time we have to drive all the way across the state of SD we get a nasty cross wind. I just slow down to 50 and keep on going. This is when you really appreciated a good hitch set up.

RE: Water pumps

If we are at the camper the pump is on. When we leave, the pump is off. If you leave a pet in the camper turn it off. I've heard of pets accidentally turning on the kitchen sink and filling the grey tank and overflowing the tub. Yuck.
When the fresh water runs out, turn off the pump. It won't kill it to run dry for a while.

RE: Roof Vent Installed in Bunkhouse!

Thanks - I think cutting that first little access hole was scarier than the roof.
BTW - The kids got another upgrade this evening. I mounted a 19" LCDTV in the bunkhouse. Mounted a simple TV bracket by drilling into the hollow aluminum frame and using toggle bolts. Hope it "hangs" in there. Seems the bunkhouse could be pretty bouncy on the road.
Two HDTVs now - are we camping or living in a 29' second house now?!?!

RE: Reinforcing the top bunk

I'll make some guessing after looking at mine.
Adding support to the bed itself (more slats)
Adding supports to the wall (more L brackets)
The bottom bunks are not substantial either.
How much weight does it need to support?
