RE: The future of heavy haulers

To compare a GMC gas V12 to a 12V71, The one I knew of could go over the mtn. on the Pa. pike Faster with a full load than the V12 gaser empty. Those things were Rockets. The only thing that could run with them were the V8 Cats! Bobby

RE: The future of heavy haulers

Seams to me one of the first trucks I drove was a V12 GMC with a 10 speed road ranger and we hauled gasoline with it,not 8hrs a day but 16 hrs ( day and night drivers) The only problem I remember is they liked to drink gas. They would out pull the 220 Cumins and 6/71 Detroits at the time.

RE: The future of heavy haulers

I doubt if I will ever go back to a gasser for heavy hauling, whether it be hauling hay or dragging a fifth wheel or in a motorhome. Complexity? I am reminded of the R3350-32WA engines I used to work on. They were supercharged, required 115/145 Avgas (which is no longer readily available) to develop full power, had a very complicated Stromberg Pressure-Injection carburetor, a rather complicated magneto/distributor low tension ignition system, required water/alcohol injection for pull power output, had sodium filled exhaust valves for cooling, had failure/leakage-prone Power Recovery Turbines, and 18 cylinders in two rows of 9 each. If you try to build a gasoline engine that will compare with a diesel in power, torque, reliability and fuel economy, I do believe you will wind up with an engine just as if not more complex than a diesel of today. I have seen the standby generators that were used to power a radio station. Two huge Waukesha gasoline powered units. I have also seen the one Caterpillar diesel unit that replaced them. I would be quite interested in seeing a gasoline V8, V10, or V12 engine intended to be used in the tractor of an 80,000 lb. over-the-road semi, capable of 75 MPH for 8 hours per day 5 days a week, with a full load.

RE: Route from Hagerstown, Maryland to Oceanside, California

From a truckdrivers point of view,go south. try to advoid snow but mainly to advoid tolls ,fuel will likly be cheaper in the south. We may be only counting pocket change on tolls and fuel but when you run alot of miles it vwill add up fast. Bobby

RE: Where's the luxury?

I have 2 that I recomend, SunnyBrook 27 fks & Arctic Fox 26X You need to look deeper than just sales brochures. Both companys will build these trailers to suit you. My SunnyBrook was listed as custom built, and I love it.SunnyBrook is owned by Winnebago and in my opion is firstclass. I pull mine wit a Nissan Titan With the big tow package, tow rating is 9500lbs.
