RE: Laptop for camping/travel

cool deal..... thanks for taking the time to post the the pictures
it most definitely gives me a base of reference to work with
Duane
eta: the interior of your vehicle looked strangely familiar so i checked your profile
i have a 1996 f250 7.3 liter extended cab long bed
and if i recall correctly(now that i think bout it) we compared notes quite a while back on how our rigs were very similar and ultimatly how inexpensive 5th wheeling can be especially starting out.. we both have less than 10,000 in our total rigs(if i recall our convo correctly)
thanks again for taking the time to post the pics

RE: Wheel Chocks and King Pin Stand

...Use a bipod/tripod under the king pin. Make sure it is tight between the ground and the king pin, don’t just adjust it till it touches, tighten it so the front overhang will not move. Make sure to check the stabilizers and bipod/tripod every couple of days because they will loosen up over time....After making sure the bipod/tripod is tight against kingpin, it’s important to lower some of the 5er’s weight onto the bipod/tripod. After that, no further adjustment of the bipod/tripod will be necessary.
exactly, then tighten down your scissor jack BAL's in the rear(if thats what you have)

very cool
mind if i ask how you mounted the base of the stand to the vehicle?
as you can tell from my posts, im always willing to try to fabricate something vs spending 100's of extra dollars unnecessarily

RE: Wheel Chocks and King Pin Stand

tripod works for me great w/ bal stabilizers in the back..makes it solid as a rock
i said a long time ago that i noticed that they are most effective with 5th wheels up to a total lenght of 34 ish feet or so(when compared to those that say they work or dont work).... and as stated above, used correctly
i work within a limited budget so the return on the investment was worth it

RE: Where do put your generators when running?

run gennys...in a WALMART? That seems inconsiderate, at very least, and seemingly would get you an invite to exit the premises, no?I don't know if WM would evict you, but it isn't a great idea just the same. We're not supposed to be camping there, just 'parking'.
im sure a genny running in a walmart parking lot is far less noisy than me sleeping in my big rig(after asking permission)
not to be to snide but dang..... the noise police act like anything they wouldnt do would be near the same as blaring some marching music(sousa) at a parade or worse setting off firecrackers in as cavern
its friggin walmart!!!.......most of the management love to see positive activity in their parking lots(especially the 24 hour stores)
it brings them business

RE: Laptop for camping/travel

for everything i do with a computer, i pick up used(off lease) corportate laptops from a reputable resupplier off of ebay
i am so impressed with the company i have purchased 5 of em for different members of the family
all were less than 150 bucks
i dont see a need to spend 500 plus dollars on a computer when the newness is wore off after couple a months anyway
as im typing this on a desktop, my 140 dollar computer is hooked up to my 32 inch lcd tv playing a netfix movie...by the way, its an HP

RE: winter use of my fifth wheel

i "wintered" over in my 1996 32 ft 5th wheel twice soemtimes down to 9 degrees
couple things i did
i used an electric oil heater in the living area and a small ceramic heater up in the bathroom bedroom area
dont leave the valves for you tanks open or all you will end up with is frozen sewer pipe...only dump when necessary and hand walk the pipe to make sure you get as much moisture/water out of it as you can then reclose the valves
i went to lowes and got an electric heat strip a little longer than the hose pipe and taped it to the pipe and then insulaterd the whole thing with the black pipe insulation stuff....i then went over all that with silver tape for weatherazation,,, when you hook up this water pipe, make sure you insulate the part of the camps water supply from the ground up to and around the the spigot as well...was nice to have water all the time
with my 5th wheel being 30 amp, i cheated a sturdy drop cord by the slide and used it off the 15 amp plug on the power pole to run the front oil heater and a small electric convection oven/hot plates etc
i tried to ultiiize everything off of electric if i could since it wa s included in the camp ground fees, though i did leave my propane heat set on 45 or so in case a breaker popped
best learning is through experience and boy did i learn :)

ever thought about a truck wash?
most major truck stops have em and have seen some with ads on their bill boards for Rv's as well
them big rigs dont stay pretty and shiny by themselves :)

RE: Champion Generator

i love when the noise police gets all upset
somehow the poster has equated all non-inverter generators as contractor grade gennies
the champions have some fine contractor grade gensets as well a line of gensets specifically designed as portable rv gensets
oh wait, the same can be said for red and blue too
as many threads as i see on this, i would wager most that have made disparaging remarks(noise police) have never seen, much less heard a champion non contractor grade genset in action...i would suspect that some have seen an any ole contractor genset and just make a lot of assumptions from that point forward

RE: Making all 5ers Look Bad

problem is....no laws are broken
very few roads have minimum speed limits
at least it wasnt a bicycle or a moped..... as most are aware, they have the same legal rights on a road as a vehicle
i dont have to pull over for anyone though i probably would to be considered a considerate driver

RE: What size generator

i still say an inexpensive champion will be adaquate for your needs(as you posted)
one of my pet peeves is that people are more than willing to offer high dollar solutions to relatively low dollar fixes(unintenallly of course)
the law of diminishing returns is always in play.....will a 300 dollar portable generator meet my needs? if the answer is yes then probem solved....if your made of money then yuo wouldnt be askng to begin with
im sure your well could care less if its a couple hundred gennie with an impeccible record of service vs a couple thousand dollar generator that ultiamtly does the same thing..... get water from A to B............and run your 5th wheel infrequently
i personally got my champion(a few yrs back) for almost the same reason your looking at a portable genset....since our power outage last month, my slack butt made sure and filled the champion(as well as a couple extra 5 gallon fuel jugs) and placed it between the house and the 5th wheel
either which way i choose to plug in, ill have all the relative comforts...completly in the rv and minimially in the house
and i didnt spend 10,000 dollars on a home back up gennie

RE: What size generator

get ya a champion.....even camping world has em on sale for 299t
It will be marginal to run his water pump...
Whats important is THAT it runs the water pump, not how much spare is left over afterwards. :)
:B
gotta admit.... that made me chuckle

RE: What size generator

I have heard of the weight police but that is a first I have heard of Noise Police.
Last winter I made it without a power outage. But I did have water freezing problems from negative temps. I have to move my pressure tank from the shed into the basement before winter.
:B
you will
