RE: GPS

thats a difficult question and the terms used are very loose
with my rand mcnally truck version gps i get free updates via connecting it to the usb port of my computer..then using the provided software, i can upload all updates
some gps have upgradable maps but they use the litle smart cards(as in cameras) that have to be mailed out to you for the upgrade
when researching, i decided on the rand mcnally for 2 reasons...
1. they provide the motor carrier atlas which is the "truckers bible"
2. i dont have to "order" an update.....
(I;m an Rver and an OTR trucker)

RE: Bridge Clearance

simple answer is to get a paper copy of the rand mcnally truck atlas from any truck stop(as mentioned above)....it lists all under height bridges and a lot more info to help anyone driving anything big plus the dot phone numbers to call if you have a question because things fo change with repaving etc(help desk type stuff)....13.6 is the standard for truckers(me being one)
i have the fancy rand mcnally gps(trucker version) but still keep the actual atlas(truckers travel bible) at hand for cross reference if im going where i havent gone before(meaning off the interstate etc)...
happy traveling

RE: The Truth on generators

i have a champion and fits the bill(pun intended) fine for the rare uses when camping
the issue that always prevails is the noise police and the presumption that since someone doesnt by off the top shelf, that we are inconsiderate rednecks with no common sense on when to run them.... they are on par noise wise with the yamahas and Hondas when under load by the way
one thing you will also see is Champions get lumped in by the noise police with cheap manufactured gensets you can buy at auto parts stores, discount lots etc.....
to use an economics ex: the law of diminishing returns apply....if you have the disposable income to buy a Thoroughbred, fine...if not, i recommend the champion for its reliability, long life span and its pretty darn quiet for being a non inverter genny
to me the Champion fits my needs perfectly...based on the laws of diminishing returns...both as a small back up if the power goes out at the house and the very rare occasion i dont have shore power and need some occasional power(mainly ac in hot climates)
its your wallet

I don't believe dropping six or seven inches to soft bed rails, that crush, would cause any structural damage to your fifth wheel trailer. JMHO. Jack

RE: Picture problem

Picasa is a picture management application and doesnt actually hold any of your pics..it organizes them for you from wherever you have them on your computer
one of the buttons when your looking at a pic with picasa is something to the effect "show me picture location"... this should show you the actual folder/location of that pic
what that mean in terms of ebay is to download the pic from its actual location/folder

RE: Straight talk

ditto... have had straight talk for a few yrs and zero probs..i bounce back and forth between the unlimited and the 1000 minute plan dependng on travel plans( i have used a magic jack for a few yrs and google voice as well if i want to make calls from home)
google voice is sweet because im not a big texter but my kids are..its nice to be able to text via the computer and not the silly little telephone screen i can hardly see..plus it archives all my texts, voicemails etc... the reason i mention that is i have linked my little stright talk phone to the google voice acct etc blah blah

RE: printer

I use a Brother 490CW wireless printer, scanner, copier, fax. got it at Pamida last year for 59 dollars
With all of these units, it's not the initial price, but the cost of replacement ink!
I also have this Brothers unit. It uses the LC-61 ink cartridges, that if bought from Brothers oem is very expensive.
If you go online and google this number you'll find after market ink cheap!
Did I say cheap, 3 sets (3 colors+black) shipped for under $20, and they work as good, and last as long as the oem ink.
I also wanted to add that these cartridges are brand new, not refills.
X2 on mfc490cw
and cant beat the ink prices...can find em easily with a google search and/or eeeebaaay

RE: Use a laptop or netbook for navigating?

Does anyone have the experience to compare Streets and Trips to Delorme TOPO or Street Atlas? Which has the best maps or is easiest to use?
their all about the same
strets and trips is just a hair easier to use(input addresses) but it could also be that i used it a lot longer
my brother is a catastrophic claims adjuster and swears by deloeme
i have used both and the current version of deloeme is on my laptop(with transponder)
since im an OTR trucker, i use my Rand MCnally MC fancy trucker version GPS for real time info and since it is a MCfancy, it has updated constructions zones and a lot more features that can be updated daily. I also have deloeme as a back up(plus on my widescreen laptop i can get a much larger overview)...and as any good truck driver(or driver of a non normal sized vehicle, i always pick up the current yrs version of the rand mcnally truckers atlas and have it in the truck to cross reference offical bridge heights and truck restrictions(such as you cant take 85 through atlanta unless your doing a drop off or pick up even though the hwy itself is tated for trucks)... things change yearly and sometimes its in the middle of a paper print
to me, the naysayers of GPSs in general have never used one (especially a good current one) and as a whole have never been fighting time frames(meaning be here at this time 1500 miles away in 2 days)
whoever said paper maps are more current is just plain ignorant..i can upgrade my GPS anytime i want whereas a paper map your lucky to get an upgraded reprint every few yrs(with the exception of the Rand MCnally truck atlas) but rememeber, its only printed once a yr as well
to add: i have a couple briefcaes full of paper maps i have accumulated over the yrs from my pre GPS days

RE: Gps systems

from my understanding the rand MCNally RV unit is the same as the trucker unit except for added rv specific POI's(campgrounds etc)
as a truck driver, i have the rand mcnally truck model and love it..i can set it any height, weight, length combo and it will route accordingly..i upgrade it weekly online(for the most part)
side note:
truck drivers tend to want to make right hand turns when possible(safety) and i have noticed occasionally that this unit will try to route me to make a couple of right hand turns instead of a lefthand turn to reach what it considers a TRUCK route(in city traffic)
oh and trust me, their is PLENTY of bridges that arent 13'6"..their is a bridge or 2 out there that used to be(still listed as) but what happpens when a road get repaved or their is snow on the ground etc....never assume... there are plenty of trailers out there that have been peeled back like a sardine can cuz of that word....assume

RE: composite to HDMI

per my instructions that came with my 32 inch vizio lcd tv e320va that does not have a set of separate yellow red white input connectors
"you can use your hdtv component input to accept A/V(composite)from a source with A/V out(in this case your sat reciever). please plug your video signal(yellow connector) into the component input(green connector) and match up the audio connectors(left is white connector and red is an right connector) for the sound..expect to see a black/white video in the component input if its selected by accident"
if im reading your original post correctly, your trying to get standard composite (Y,r,b connectors) to connect to component
betcha an internet dollar this i what your looking for(instruction wise)
there is no need to buy anything adaptor wise unless you want to throw money away and if you do, ill just send ya my addy;)
here is the image
http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/electronics/detail-page2/B003NSBL9K.02.lg.jpg
yellow goes in the green connector with the Y under it...audio in is straight forward
and explains how the kids hooked up the Xbox360 and then a DVD player to this tv with the standard Y(video) and r and b(audio):h:B off the xbox and DVD player

RE: Auxilary fuel tank

Go to northerntool.com in the keyword put in fuel tanks. They will have lots of selection from RDS. I have a RDS 50 gallon aux tank tool box combo. It is gravity feed and has worked perfectly for me for 3 years now. I have the same soft cover as you and a 2500 chevy standard bed. 6 1/2 feet. I think thats what you meant by shortbed. On thing is it seems like I only can get 40 to 44 gallons out of my 50 gallon tank. Which is plenty for me. I have heard others say the same so think about that when sizing your tank.
X2 on northern tool
they have a LARGE selection

National Park regulations limit sound levels to 76Db measured at 7 meters and the Champion is well below that number.

RE: generators

Stu's $300.00 Champion generator is one that is not a welcome sight and sound in a campground.
according to who?
ive never had a complaint considering at load, a champion honda or yamaha are relatively the same noise wise
i mean. why are you running a genny if you dont have a load on it? at least i can have the ac blasting or if cold the electric heat etc running while my batteries charge with the yellow peril(champion)

RE: 4000/3500 watt champion generator

I might be wrong but I think that model genset don't idle. It starts and goes to regulated speed for output voltage. Your clue is the choke, its "hunting" for more fuel and the ethanol is the problem. If it has a "high speed" mixture needle (in the bottom of the carb) open it up just a touch until the hunting goes away. Without the high speed needle it will require rejeting just a touch richer to fix the problem. Contact Champion and get thier input on this. Just my 2 cents....
Exactly correct. I have a Coleman that did the same thing. I got tired of it and removed the carb bowl, removed the main jet and drilled it a touch larger with a tiny pin drill. End of problem, runs great now.
Since all this emission stuff manufactures have removed the adjustable mixture controls they used to have. And now with ethenol it requires a richer mixture for about the same power output, thus a too lean, surging generator.
was that a coleman powermate 1850? if so, it was your advice that got my old beat up second hand unit to purr like a kitten
