RE: Keeping Honda CVR Battery Charged

I had the same thing happen after 8 hrs towing - 09 CRV. Sensitivity was set at the lowest and everything was off in the car and this was through Indiana (pretty flat) Ky and middle TN. No nav system. The battery may be the issue (3 yrs old, 3 Chicago winters) as our 01 CRV Honda battery punked out pretty close to that. We've towed the 01 for 10 years with no battery issues during towing.
I found that 6 hrs. towing was OK with battery. This alligns a little better with our routine anyway, so I'll do the Trik-l-charge when I get to it.
The fuses (all of them) are a PITA to get to and pull.

RE: Dog Cots

We were camping last weekend at the casino in Joliet, IL. Neat set up next to us, 4 Irish Wolfhounds, two X-pen enclosures, two canopies with a sun shade on the west aspect. It got to the mid 90's so they got a little shower at the hottest part of the day. Very nice, well behaved dogs.
I should have taken a picture of the setup... It looked kind of like Raindove's, only SUPERSIZED. BTW good job with the picture.
The dogs spent the night indoors (good thing they had a huge motorhome) as floor space would have been tight :B

RE: Interesting

That was powerful - I had to grab a Kleenex by the time they got to the GSDs..... sort of mirrors my comments about horse-show judges: they HAVE to stop placing the freaks.
I thought the same thing when I saw your post in that thread.
Too often the real important things are ignored (temperament, healthy conformation, long term health) in show rings and/or in breeding decisions.
Most breeds have undesirable characteristics that could be effectively eliminated with an affirmative breeding approach.
Mark has posted frequently about border collies and the efforts their association is going to in order to eliminate some of these problems in this breed.
I've found that less popular, working breeds (whether for hunting, protection, herding or any other function) seem to be healthier and less prone to problems. As soon as popularity hits and everybody tries to breed to make money, the breed suffers.

Pulp hemorrhage
Lance sent me a PM and it sounds like this condition. Very good information on this web site.
The best choices are extraction or root canal.

RE: Quiet Campground for July 4th - Dog fearful of fireworks

I don't think that it can be a big issue because of the states are not allowed for fireworks except Chistmas-New Year week. Isn't it??
Cross the state line over into Indiana. You may change your position.

RE: old cats and rabies shots-

I don't give people a hard time about it either, I'm not the police. And there are several patients I have that I recommend NOT getting the vaccination for many different reasons.
There are consequences to not giving the vaccination, including breaking the law and endangering your pet's health, BUT there are also consequences in giving the vaccination as well.
Just trying to give information.

RE: old cats and rabies shots-

.. the rabies vaccine is something that really isn't necessary but I do it until they get older.
Disagree.
Cat rabies is now more common than rabies in dogs.
Many states and municipalities require it.
If your cat bites has no vaccination history and it's reported, you can be REQUIRED to euthanize the cat and have the head submitted for rabies testing (depending on state and local laws). At a minimum, quarantine for a period of time is required.
Instances of reaction to the rabies vaccine are rare.
International travel makes this all the more important.
The only one that can realistically answer your question is your vet. There are some medical conditions that may make vaccination inadvisable.
Age and weight is seldom reason enough not to vaccinate.
Vaccinating as infrequently as possible is a good plan, so many opt for a 3 year vaccine.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

GREAT NEWS! Wayne Crockett Commissioner Chairman of the Burke County Commissioners is making a proposal to the commission that the six Acers of land owned by the county be deeded to the Old Fella Burke County Animal Rescue with buildings. One building has 2,550 square feet and there are two wells on the property. It is completely fenced in with an eight foot tall chain link fence.
Also he is making a proposal that the County go into partnership with Old Fella and establish an animal control starting October 2012.
What a great potential. It will not only help the animals of Burke county, but also all of the residents.

RE: June 1st 2012 is "Save Calvin's Tooth Day"! p.5

Hi Pops. Did she run a BUN/Creat on Harlee yesterday?? I think the sucralfate is a good idea. If this continues and lab work is normal, the next step is X-Ray and or ultrasound.
It's been 3-4 years since the splenectomy?? Unlikely that this is related to the hemangiosarcoma from then, but other things can develop including adhesions from that surgery.
Hope it's nothing serious.
PS Old Age is not a disease... (As I'm approaching geezerhood This is a personal position :B)

RE: Pepsi and Horse show

As Gus said, this was a serious issue back in the 70's (when I was in vet schoold) got lots of attention and I thought the practice was largly eliminated. I'm not associated with any horse people, so can't speak to how wide spread the practice still is.
I like your idea of firing or soaring the ankles of the people that do this...

RE: Traveling w/ a pet, check this out

Do a google search on breed bans.
You'll find about as many municipalities are reversing their breed bans as new ones being put into effect.
Many have found that they are very costly to enforce and don't really effectively address the issue of dog aggression and bites.
Breed bans are a knee jerk reaction by politicians and a feel good approach. Most experts in the field favor an aggressive dog/animal policy in favor of a breed ban. This approach allows more flexibility to animal control officers and shifts the responsibility to the owners of any dog regardless of breed.

RE: Proposed USDA rule change internet puppy sales

I find the wording confusing and contradictory. Are retail sellers exempt or not? What good does moving the number limit of breeding animals from three to four when there is a $500 gross revenue clause? This was probably a group written proposal with attorney input so that it's totally confusing. If they just say, internet, flea market and multiple animal sales are affected by the animal welfare act it could simplify the whole thing.

RE: help with fleas please

So you wouldn't capstar the mom, either?
Yes I would, but OP indicated they could only pet her for a short period then hissing and can't handle her.
Capstar is labled OK for use in pregnant and lactating animals.

RE: help with fleas please

I'd avoid any medications or topicals. I've used a water based flea spray - sprayed lightly on a towel then wrap the kitten in the towel for a short time (body wrapped, head out). I don't recommend this in the hands of someone inexperienced in evaluating condition of the kittens before/during and after treatment.
The safest is to use methods involing nontoxic soap/water and or picking them off with a flea comb, but as Susan said chilling is a significant risk.
Bottom line, you are going to have an ongoing problem until the mother is treated.
