RE: Magellan RV9165T left me stranded!

High tech devices always require a backup. In this case, I'd go with a map:B. GPS uses a very low power signal, which is fine until you get into an urban setting where all sorts of higher power signals on various frequencies are just waiting to interfere with your GPS unit.

RE: Downloading Malwarebytes - UPDATE - ITs back

A Google search for iYogi reveals that they are a subcontractor based in India, and that they are doing third party support for several companies besides Avast--they aren't "recommended" by Avast, they work for Avast. The fact that they are in India is why they can sell you support for $169 per year: they pay their techs next to nothing. The search also reveals that a lot of people are very unhappy with the level of service they've received. The Avast website has a forum with posts from many unhappy Avast purchasers who aren't thrilled with the support offered by this company. Trend Micro didn't catch it because it's not a virus. It's a program. AV programs don't detect malware--that's why you need something like Malwarebytes to get the adware and malware. Good luck, and keep us posted.

RE: Downloading Malwarebytes - UPDATE - ITs back

This kind of malware is often spread by a website that tricks visitors into clicking on a link that installs the software behind your back. Check your browser history--what sites did you visit right before the problem resurfaced? Do you download music? Music files can be a source. Do you use any of the apps on Facebook? Facebook is notoriously insecure. Do not install custom video players offered by websites. They often contain such programs. In fact, never install any software that does not come from a trusted website. Stuff from the big download hosts, like CNet, MajorGeeks, FileHippo, and the like are fine. It's when you let a questionable website install software--or you download and install it yourself--that the trouble can start.

RE: Electronic water softener

Running water past a piece of wire with an electrical current passing through it has no effect on molecular charge, particle size, or anything else, except the number of dollars in your wallet. It's a scam.

RE: Can't find photos on old hard drives

Can you boot from either of the laptop drives? If the OS was still working when you removed them from the laptops, and your desktop can boot from a USB device, you might then be able to read the files and move them to the location of your choice. Just a thought.

RE: Need help with Towing Capabilities of my truck

Usually the limiting factor with a half ton truck is the cargo capacity. Look on the door jamb of the truck--there's a sticker that will give you the actual weight of your particular truck, and the cargo capacity. Figure 15% of the GVWR of the trailer as tongue weight. The tongue weight, plus the weight of you, passengers, fuel, the hitch, and anything else in the truck, should not exceed the cargo capacity. You will probably bump up against that number well before you get to your max trailer weight rating. A 6800 lb trailer could have a tongue weight of a thousand pounds, leaving little capacity for anything else. If you get into serious hills you may find the 4.6 somewhat lacking, but as long as you watch your weights and don't mind taking it easy, you'll be OK.

RE: Do Headlight Restoration Kits Work?

I think it depends on the degree of deterioration of the lenses. On my daughter's car, the lenses appear to have tiny hairline cracks everywhere even after sanding, polishing, etc. with a few different products. The hazing was removed, but the lenses are still not close to clear. I'm going to get replacements for it. The old ones seem beyond repair.

RE: Simple Green warning

I forgot to add: one of the best ways I've found to deal with black streaks is to prevent them in the first place by keeping your roof clean. I wash it at least once a season, and it makes a definite difference.

RE: trailers and gas mileage

I get 15-17 mpg unloaded, 8.5-105 pulling my trailer. You're doing about average. As others have said, slowing down will be the best way to improve your mileage. Just run with the trucks and stay in the right lane--you'll get better mileage and arrive at your destination more relaxed and rested. Remember, you're on vacation. Take time to smell the flowers.

RE: Simple Green warning

I don't care for Simple Green due to the tendency it has to leave spots if not rinsed repeatedly. For black streaks I've had the best results with Turtle Wax Platinum car washing soap. Removes the streaks with only a minimal amount of elbow grease, and leaves no spots.
