RE: Gas detector keeps going off

What I want to know is how is it sounding with the battery disconnected?
Sorry if I was not clear. If I use the battery disconnect the alarm does shut off. If I connect power again the alarm sound goes off within a few minutes. This is not a chirp that I would expect with a low battery but the full loud alarm signaling gas detected.I checked my battery and it is fully charged.
Thanks for all your respones. Since this is a 2004 trailer I will plan on replacing the unit next spring when I pull it out of storage.

Gas detector keeps going off

I winterized and stored my 5th wheel last week, I removed the propane tanks and have a disconnect on the battery, While getting it ready to move there was no issue with the gas detector. I towed the 5th wheel less than 10 miles to the storage lot and when we got there the detector was going off, I reset it opened all the windows and let it air out but it keeps going off.
With no propane tanks or aerosol bottles what could be setting off the detector? Like I said I have a battery disconnect so it won’t drain my battery but this has me baffled.
Can these things go bad? Is there some sort of maintenance that should be done on them? If I need to replace the unit how difficult is it and what is a ballpark cost?
Thanks!

RE: Which product to stabilize the FW?

I use the Winfield front leg stabilizers along with rear jacks and BAL wheel chocks. The main reasons I went with the Winfield was I did not have to drill my frame and the price. I am very pleased with the results.

RE: Black Tank Flush - Don't do what I did!!

Can someone post a pic or description of how the Flush King works? Might want one but can't figure it out. You mean to tell me there is enough pressure to backfill the tank from the sewer hose?...??????
I have used a flush king for four years now. Yes there is enough pressure to fill the tanks (one tank at a time) to rinse and dump. There is not the pressure inside the tank as an internal rinse system but it does get most of the "stuff" out.
The flush king connects to the drain pipe of your RV and then you connect your sewer hose to the flush king. There is a valve that opens and closes to the sewer hose and a water connection for a water hose that also has a shut off. You empty your tank, close the valve on the flush king leaving the valve to the tank open, turn on the water and fill the tank up. As stated here pay attention because you can overfill the tank and flood the inside of your RV. Once the tank is close to full shut off the water and open the valve on the flush king. It is the force of the water leaving the tank that carries the "stuff" out. The flush king has a clear elbow so you know when your tank has been rinsed enough.
I still use a tank rinse wand that I put down the toilet on occasion to get anything stuck to the walls of the tank etc. I only do this two or three times a year the last time during winterizing.

RE: Underground Winter Storage

If I were at home I would drive over to US Storage for you but I’m not…
I liked using that mine…
If my son or daughter get over that way I will see if they will stop and check on them…
I don’t know what’s wrong with their phone line…
I knew Wampum and Brady were owned by the same family…
Thanks for your kind offer and all of your help. I will look into the Butler fairgrounds Tuesday.
You can also store at the Lawrence Co. Fairgrounds on rt. 108,BIL stored 5ver there,200.00 a winter, inside the display buildings
I will look into this place on Tuesday. Thanks for your help!

RE: Underground Winter Storage

You could try the butler farm show grounds for indoor storage…
Did you try the underground storage mine at East Brady???
click
The East Brady site is owned by the same company as Wampum. They have a height limit of 10 feet and that is a little tight. The woman also thinks that it is at capacity.
I will look into the Butler Farm Show. I looked into the Westmorland Fairgrounds and they were twice the cost of the mine. They also required you to have the unit out by March 1st. The weather is just a little too unpredictable here for that.

RE: Parking the 5th Wheel for Winter

I am also dealing with winter storage already!
I tried getting space in an underground mine but they are already booked. I could get my 5th wheel alongside my house but in the spring thaw that side gets all the water and it is very wet. I had a jet ski there one winter and it sank to the hubs. I thought about putting down gravel but I think I would need to excavate first and put in a lot of gravel for the base. Unfortunately I am between jobs and money is an issue so hiring someone is out of the question for now. I am in the process of looking for a safe lot somewhere as I had multiple issues at the old one.

RE: Underground Winter Storage

OP Here
Well I heard back from the storage faculty and they are already full. I am on the waiting list but it does not look good.
It looks like I need to find an outdoor lot somewhere. I just hope I have better luck at the new place than I had at the old one. I hate having to think about winter!

RE: Underground Winter Storage

I've used the Meritex Gateway storage in Wampum since 2003, and will continue using that facility as long as I have a rig. We always take everything out of the rig before storage and utilize a couple of buckets of Damp-Rid as a precaution just in case there is a little higher level of humidity than usual. As time has gone on, the mine has continued to pave more areas which seems to reduce some humidity. I bought a new-to-us rig last year and opted for the climate controlled section were all the floors are paved and the mine walls and pillars are sealed, when we drove out of the mine in April, there was barely any dust on it after being there for five months. You can get into the facility any Friday that you wish if you care to check on your rig, any other day there would be a charge.
If you're really interested in storing there, you better call quick, the last couple of years they have maxed out capacity.
Thanks for the information!
Did you ever store in the "Unconditioned" section? Was humidity a problem there?
I would definitely use Damp Rid in several areas of the RV.
Thanks again!

RE: Underground Winter Storage

You might also want to try
US Storage Company
(724) 352-7122
1163 Winfield Rd,
Cabot, PA 16023
I used to store my camper and boat in the mine there… I put mine as deep into the mine as I could get and there wasn’t even any dust from traffic on them… and never had a humidity problem…
They also have climate controlled rooms in the mine for extra $$$, but I didn’t see the need…
I tried calling and I keep getting "Your call can not be completed...." I looked them up online and they do not have a website but just yellow page listings. I will keep trying.
Thanks for the information!

Underground Winter Storage

I need to store my 31 foot 5th wheel for the winter.
I have found a former limestone mine about an hour away in Wampum, PA. If I commit to a 5 month contract it will cost me the same per month as storing it outside in a storage lot. The temperature is a constant 54 degrees but there is a higher level of humidity as opposed to a climate controlled building.
Has anyone used this type of storage and if so what are any drawbacks? I am concerned about the humidity but it was sitting in the winter weather for all of its life.
Any thoughts or concerns would be appreciated!
Thanks!

RE: Wheel Hub Temperature

OP here,
Thanks for all the replies!
I always do a visual check on the tires and treads and felt the hubs when I stopped. I would also check pressure if indicated. The pressure is always checked when cold at the start of every day while towing. I carry a small compressor with me for this reason. For some reason I never thought about checking the tires temp as well.
Thanks again for the help!

Wheel Hub Temperature

I just purchased an infrared temp reader yesterday. In the past I just felt my hubs to see if they were too hot. What is the normal reading and at what temp do you start to worry? Technology is wonderful if you know how to use it correctly!
Thanks!

RE: Myrtle Beach

If you need to stop for a quick rest the North Carolina Rest Areas and Welcome centers are very nice. I have used the one at the Virginia North Carolina border on I 77 southbound and the south bound one on I 73 - 74 just south of Asheboro. Both had separate RV / Trailer parking. The one on I 77 was really separate while the one near Asheboro was right next to the trucks. Both had very clean rest rooms.
They work great for me to get a few hours of sleep and move on.

RE: RV Tire Changing

There are 2 Trailer Aids available. I have the yellow one and it is rated to 10000 pounds. I do not know what the black (plus) model is rated at. They do work great just make sure you get one that can handle the weight of your rig.

RE: Have you ever had to make this decision ?

I had my first heart attack at age 43 in December 2003 my third in January 2010. I also suffered a small stroke in 2006 with very small effects. I am diabetic and have moderate arthritis in my back, legs and shoulders.
Last year I had one doctor tell me that I had to quit work and I would be disabled for the rest of my life. My cardiologist told me after placing 4 stents that my heart function was just fine. The cardio doc was right!
While I could not perform all of the maintenance on my 5th wheel last year I was able to keep it functional enough to make 2 long trips and several short ones. The first long one was only three months after my last heart attack.
I have played catch up this year with some help from my family and the 5th wheel has not looked better. We leave this coming Thursday for Myrtle Beach.
I can tell you that I am feeling great now. If you are feeling tired now I think you might be surprised at how much better you will feel after they address the cause.
Good luck and keep the faith!

RE: Replacement Tires

I keep my spare in the front storage compartment. When I wash and wax the 5th wheel I pull it out inspect for any cracks and also treat it with tire shine treatment. I check the pressure on it before each trip. I carry a small compressor with me so I check all my tires before I leave home and the camp ground.
I purchased this tire in 2006 and it still looks brand new. I just replaced the four tires this spring but did not replace the spare. Does anyone think that this was a mistake?
Thanks!

Almost done with the maintenance

Due to poor health last year I did not keep up with all of the routine maintenance on my 5th wheel like I should have. I have been busy for the last few weeks playing catch up. I have replaced all four tires, washed and waxed the exterior, scrubbed and conditioned the roof, replaced the plumbing vents on the roof that had deteriorated, replaced a multitude of screws that the heads had started to rust, and all of the baggage compartment door hold clips that had discolored. All of the systems have been checked, cleaned and are all functional. Everything inside has been cleaned scrubbed or polished. It goes into the service center Tuesday for state inspection, service / adjust the brakes, and the wheel bearings packed.
The last major task for me is the two roof seams; one at the front and the other at the rear. The caulking is worn down where I can see the screw heads. It is still intact and I have no leaks.
My questions are do I remove the old caulking or do I apply the Dicor Lap Sealant right over top of it? Do I prep the area with a special solvent first that is compatible with a EPDM roof? If so what solvent do I use?
We head down to Myrtle Beach July 14th (Willowtree Campground). My 5th wheel has never looked so good and I have not felt this good in such a long time! We can hardly wait!
Thanks!

I also had stains that soap and water would not remove. The Magic Eraser took care of all of them.
