RE: ~Post your campsite photos here~

Here is a pic from our first trip of the year. It is from Myakka River State park in Florida. This is a new campground at the park and it even has full hookups. $26 isn't bad either. http://i1139.photobucket.com/albums/n550/dmcummins/100_0125-1.jpg

wind

It looks like we will have to delay our early start tomorrow due to wind. The forcast is 35mph winds with gust to 50. The wind advisory last till 6pm. It may cost us a day, but I'd rather be safe. I'm new at this, so far the trips we have made the weather has been calm. How much wind can you tolerate?

RE: RV parks restricting coaches older than 10 years

If my rig were older than 10 years (some of them have been) I would just simply tell them oterwise... Who's gonna know?? Them?? I don't think so :R Les I'm pretty sure most can tell mine is older than 10 years old. Its closer to 50. And it has a few character marks here and there. But I don't have a problem if a park wants to exclude me. Just let me know when I make my reservation, not after I get there. So far I pretty much stay at State campgrounds and have had no problems.

RE: RV parks restricting coaches older than 10 years

10 years, my rig is 47 years old so I guess I'm in real trouble. So far I have just stayed in State parks, but now I have something else to worry about. http://i1139.photobucket.com/albums/n550/dmcummins/100_0109.jpg width=400

RE: How Do/Did you do it?

I still cannot find it believable that there are fulltimers our here living on 60K NET. In ten years that 600,000 NET. If you have that kind of money laying around I'd like tohear from you. I'm not full timing, we are still new at this. We plan on snowbirding at first to see how we like it. 60K net is not that much these day's. I'm pretty sure many have more than that coming in.:)

RE: How Do/Did you do it?

My wife and I both retired at 50. As others have said, no debt, live below your means, and invest as much as you can. I started seriously planning for early retirement at around 39. I made up a spreadsheet that tracked my assets and liability's and my goals. I also tracked my actual spending. How else would you know how much you actually need? If you don't have a plan, you plan to fail. My last year of full time employment was 2006, I worked part time for a few months in 2007. My net worth now is higher than its ever been. I was fortunate that my family has always been healthy and Ive been married to the same woman for 30 years, who is also fine with living below our means.

RE: Total rebuild, lots of pictures and advice needed

I paid $2500 for my 1964 trailer. I probably have around $6500 and time into it now. But I have new plumbing, water heat, a/c, mattresses, flooring, toilet, ect. The old trailer is different, and we like it. We could have bought one that did not need anything, but we were able to make ours more like we wanted. Keep us updated on your project.

RE: raising trailer

Are you wanting to raise it to gain more clearance with the Hensley? The W/D bars hang pretty low. The bottom of my frame sets 14" off the ground and the bars are hanging quite a bit below that. Also I don't have a grey tank and currently use a blue tote for the grey. I can't slide the tote under the drain without lifting and tilting the tote. A couple of inches hopefully would allow me to wheel it under.

RE: raising trailer

I picked up the new equalizers today. I bought a pair of straight, and one pair with a 2" drop. I'm planning on trying out the pair with the 2" drop as this should give me an additional 2". I don't think anyone would actually notice a difference of 2". And I can adjust my hitch so everything would still be level. And the equalizers would be easier to change back if I wanted to. I'll let you know how it goes.

RE: raising trailer

I guess I could also just rotate my axel and leave it above the spring as it has a drop in it.

RE: raising trailer

Here is one of my axels, I pulled them off to clean up the leaf springs and grease the leafs. I also wanted to go thru everything as I'm planning some long trips. http://i1139.photobucket.com/albums/n550/dmcummins/002-1.jpg I would assume all I have to do is put the axel below the leaf and flip the hangers around. Since I'm already pulling off the axels, it would be easy to do now.

RE: raising trailer

Here is a pic of the rig hooked up. http://i1139.photobucket.com/albums/n550/dmcummins/level2a.jpg I'm worried about how close to the ground the w/d bars are. These old trailers were pulled by cars back in the day, so I guess they had as much clearance as the cars.

raising trailer

I have an older trailer and would like to raise it some. Currently my W/D bars are closer to the ground than I would like and I also am pretty low with my black water tank connection. I know I can put the axel's below the springs instead of on top. My springs are 2-1/2" thick and my axel's are 2" square, so I'm guessing that would give me around 3-1/2" or so. But could I change the equalizer bars instead? I currently have straight equalizer bars and they need to be replaced. Could I go with a triangular bar with 2" drop instead? I would think that would give me 2", but it would change the pivot point. Would this be a problem?

RE: Non smoker, no pets

My trailer is 47 years old. I don't have any idea of how many previous owners. But Ive never smoked and I sure cant smell anything in the old trailer. And I would find it hard to believe that its not had its share of smokers in it over its life. But the interior is all aluminum, the drapes, mattresses, and flooring has been replaced. And my wife is very sensitive to cats, she's alergic, and no problems there either. I'm sure they can be cleaned up to where at least most wouldn't be able to tell.

RE: high quality travel trailer

My 1964 Streamline is still going strong and came with a "lifetime warranty", to bad the company is no longer around.

RE: What is it with this whole "tote" thing for holding tanks?

Since my trailer was built back when the grey water was just dumped on the ground, I have a tote to handle the grey. Ive never used it for the black thou. Maybe one of these days I'll add a grey water tank. But the tote allows us to use what we have. Not a big deal.

RE: ~Post your campsite photos here~

we took a short trip to Missouri's, Meramec State Park. We arrived on Sunday with no reservations, but still had no problem getting a FHU site. We went on a cave tour and rented a canoe and did a five mile float. Our campsite was just across from the river and we had plenty of room. We were in site #5. http://i1139.photobucket.com/albums/n550/dmcummins/100_0016-1.jpg

Suspension on older trailer

I have an older trailer, a 1964 Streamline, and I'm wanting to make sure its safe to tow. Ive pulled it about 1000 miles so far and havn't had any trouble, but I want to keep it that way. It has twin axels that are 1-3/4" square with about a 2" drop. The leaf springs are 2" wide and there are 10 leafs. The axels and springs are rusty, but as far as I can tell none are cracked. I called a local spring shop that said they could recondition the old leaf springs, but the price is about the same, or more, as new ones on some sites Ive looked at. That is if the old ones match up to the newer ones. How would I determine what weight axels and springs I have or need? The trailer weighs about 5000lbs unloaded, I'm guessing 6000lbs loaded.

RE: Long trips with older trailer

mine is not that old, but I try to focus on what makes it roll.. so I carry an extra spring, shackles, bolts, bearing kit and seals, just in case. figure I can get bearing grease anywhere..but these other parts are harder to find on the road.. this way I can do a roadside repair for just about anything that will keep me rolling. Also on longer trips have carried two spares... I run 15" e-rated tires and they are hard to find on short notice... my $.02 worth, Bryan I went out and took a look at my springs again. I didn't see any like I had listed at etrailer. I have 10 leafs 2" wide. I have twin axels and the trailer weight was about 5000lbs unloaded. I don't know what the weight load of the axels are. I am going to pull one axel at a time and have the springs looked over and cleaned up at a local spring shop. I'd rather be safe than sorry. I'm guessing they are the original 1964 springs.

Long trips with older trailer

I have a 1964 Streamline trailer and we just returned from a 700 mile trip with no problems. However we are planning additional trips that are much longer. 2500 miles to florida in January, 1700 miles or so in the spring, and a longer trip out west in the summer. I'm planning on taking some tools and spare parts, bearings, grease, hitch parts, ect. Any suggestions on things to check out before we go? Do others drag 47 year old trailers across country?
