RE: How do you handle leaving pets while site seeing?

We leave Miss Daisy, our Welsh Terrier, alone in the 5'er for as long as 4-5 hours. We leave either The Weather Channel on or low volume classical music from PBS. The latter is what we normally have on at home and the sounds and voices are familiar to her. She is not a "barker" and, when asked, neighbors have not reported excessive barking from our 5th wheel. I think she sleeps most of the time we are gone. Of course, her toys are scattered all over the floor and her favorite bed is available for her in a corner. Leaving her has not been a problem.

RE: Ontario to Prince Edward Island

I'd cross into the US at Cornwall, NY, then pick up state highway #2 across VT, NH, and most of ME. When you reach Newport, ME, take Interstate #95 to Bangor. At Bangor, take Interstate #395 across the Penobscot River and then follow signs for Highway #9 on to Calais. Cross into NB at Calais/St Stevens. Be forewarned, that RV's on the P.E.I. ferry seem to be last priority for loading. They are only placed in the center aisle of the ferry, along with all the semi-trucks. We waited more than 6 HOURS last summer to board, watching I don't know how many ferries come-and-go. I'd take the bridge without question. Close your eyes and take a nap while crossing, if necessary. MaineDon

RE: Mosquito aversion

We have lived in Maine for 36 years and traveled extensively in the Maritime Provinces of Canada. In Maine, the lore is that "bug season" runs from Mother's Day to Father's Day....and I have to say that over the years this has proved to be pretty accurate. The mid-May-June time frame is the height of black fly season and, in my judgment, black flies are worse than mosquitoes. Come late June/early July, the black flies are pretty well gone and, at least during the day, the mosquitoes are "at bay". Both pests are usually gone by late July into August/September, although if you are camped on a swamp or tidal flat, even then they can be a nuisance. New Brunswick, P.E.I, and Nova Scotia are much the same as Maine. Good luck. New England is beautiful in the summer, as are the Maritimes. MaineDon

RE: East Coast trip in November / December

Two years ago, we left our home on the coast of Maine on October 10, headed for AZ. We had 6 inches of snow in southern Mass on our first night out; and on 10/11, in central PA, the state park (which was about to close) was frozen solid when we awoke. Fortunately, we had disconnected waterlines and drained as much as possible before we went to bed. New England is a great place (I've lived there for 35+ years); but best visited in an RV between May and September. MaineDon

RE: Air hitch or air pin box?

We have an air pin box and it was, in our opinions, a giant waste of $$. Our ride did not improve at all, even after weeks of fussing with inflation levels. I would never buy one again. MaineDon

RE: Pets in National parks

As long as your dogs don't bark continually while you are gone, you'll be fine. Miss Daisy, our Welsh Terrier, is used to the 5'er and has her bed and toys out. We usually leave either the Weather Channel or Public Radio on low while we are gone, just because she is used to hearing both in the RV and at home. We never leave her for more than about 3-4 hours. She does fine.

RE: Should be get new tires

Restless: We paid one of our local RV service guys to coat our tires with a preservative to combat the AZ sun. It was a thin, glue-like substance, that he painted on that is supposed to serve as a sun repellent. We are total novices/greenhorns down here in AZ and this may be nothing more than AZ "Snake Oil"; but we bought into it (for $50/tire) last June, when we realized we'd have to leave the 5'er here all summer. Something tells me that new tires will be in order before we head out for New England.......this will of course be after we get all the rattle snakes and scorpions shooed out the 5'er before departure. Ah, life in the desert.......my wife LOVES it! I remain unconvinced. MaineDon

RE: Colorado: Highway 71 or 385?

Thanks everyone. I think we'll stay on #385. It sounds like a better road and there seem to be more RV parks along it. I know that neither road is going to win a "Most Scenic Award"; but for the first half of our trip home, we are not really about scenery....just sane driving and getting there. Thanks for your help.

RE: Hey 89A from Sedona to Jerome, AZ

I agree. 89 from Cottonwood to Jerome is steep, very narrow, and curvy. Not good for a motor home or RV of almost any type. Jerome is a fun and interesting place, but not in a motor home.

RE: Should be get new tires

MEMA: We are grappling with the same issue. We have about 10,000 miles on our original tires and are about to drive home, Arizona-to-Maine. Although we had them treated last fall, our situation is complicated by the fact that the 5'er has been sitting in the AZ sun for a year. MaineDon

Colorado: Highway 71 or 385?

In about 3 weeks, we will head for the far northwest corner of North Dakota (long story why) on our way home from Arizona to Maine. We really prefer secondary roads and are looking at crossing Colorado south-to-north on either Highway #71 or #385. Has anyone had experience driving these roads? Are they in good shape? On the map, 71 looks like it might be a tad more scenic? 385 might be faster? We appreciate any help you can offer. MaineDon

RE: wholesale rv dealers....annoy me ....

We bought our Rockwood 5'er from Tom Raper in Indiana and saved about $7000 over the "best" offer in Maine. Raper took our old TT in as a trade. For warranty issues, we dealt directly with the manufacturer (Forest River), who readily consented to allow an independent RV service guy in Maine do needed repairs. Al-in-all, I'm glad we made the drive to Indiana. MaineDon

RE: Saskatchewan Parks: How Busy?

Thanks, folks. Think I'd better start shopping for a reservation now, even though we are a month away from leaving.

RE: TOTAL CHAOS>>>>

lol! This brings back memories of our first cross-country trip with our new rescue dog, Miss Daisy. She is a 20 pound Welsh Terrier with unlimited spirit. We were about 50 miles from home and stopped at a truck stop in central Maine for gas. My wife took Daisy out on leash to do some "useful business". I was at the gas pump watching as, unbeknownst to my wife, Miss Daisy slipped out of her collar and took off across the very busy truck stop. I yelled to my wife, who finally saw what had happened...but it was too late. Daisy was running, fast and free, from side-to-side of the station. People were yelling, we were both chasing her, cars were slamming on their brakes, truckers were swerving to avoid her, etc. It was a major scene, to say the least. She would probably still be running had someone not opened the door to an adjacent Subway sandwich shop. She apparently smelled the cheese and smoked turkey, for she headed inside, where she was finally captured. Needless to say, we tightened her collar once we had her back in the truck. MaineDon

Saskatchewan Parks: How Busy?

On our way home to Maine, my wife and I want to pass through North Dakota and Saskatchewan to visit her grandfather's homestead (located on the ND/SK border). We've heard that the parks in North Dakota are packed with oil workers. Is this as true for the parks in southern Saskatchewan? The old farm is located near Marienthal, just south of Torquay. RE: Slide Awnings

We've had problems with ours flapping in the wind and keeping us awake at night. Get the highest quality ones you can. We've purchased an inflatable wedge that inserts under the topper that helps some with the noise.
