RE: Do I need duels, and do I need engine brake?

I've got both a 6.7L diesel dually with a 8' box and a Jake-Brake and there is no way i'd do any serious travelling without both, now mind you we go south every winter now so i look at my rig as a required set-up for what i think as "safe travelling" which it to say my 6.7L Cummings has the torque to haul 16.000 LBS up the smokey mountains with ease and the Jake Brake to spare my brakes and help slow down on the way down. I find that having two rear tires adds tracking and stability with cross winds and in the event of a blow-out the extra wheel goes a long way to relieving anxiety and stress while travelling. All in all i consider my rig to be optimal for what i'm doing and i wouldn't change a thing.http://i728.photobucket.com/albums/ww289/MPI_Mallard/SUNP0003.jpg Red Green: They say necessity is the mother of invention. Don't know who the father is,probably remorse. Actually you do not have a "jake brake" What you do have is an exhaust brake. Big difference. JAKE is just the name of the company Jacobs.... The Jacobs opens and closes valves and is usually refered to as an ENGINE Brake... Jacobs does make an exhaust brake as do others. If it is made by Jacobs, it is still a Jake Brake..

RE: Aux fan not working 97 chev pickup

Connect a wire to the battery hot side and run it to the fan... If the fan comes on, the trouble is elsewhere, like a solenoid or a bad ac switch...if not then it's a bad fan motor.

RE: Diesel MPG?

8.5 to over 12 mpg towing, combination is 16.2 and hiway last tank of 100 miles town and 200 hiway was 19.1. Dodge 3500 Dually 4x4 4;10 axle, 6 speed manuel...Consumer reports is one of the biggest LIARS out there. For a lack of a better word.. So Average 10 towing and 20 plus hiway and 15 City...But we bought the Diesel for towing our 5th wheel. I did not use it to go back and forth to work. Bought an Escort that gets over 30 mpg for that...

RE: Chevy vs. Dodge

bmanning summed it up perfectly. Drive them both, buy what pleases YOU. Have fun camping.... X 2 The best advice you will ever get...wolfie After owning a 94 mitsubishi eclipse gsx awd and a 96 Lincoln Continental I swore I would NEVER BUY a vehicle than I could not do simple repairs!. The mits needed to have lost of stuff moved just to change the air filter, the lincoln had a bad timing chain and the engine and trans needed to be dropped to work on it... I bought the 04 Dodge Cummins. EVERYTHING CAN BE GOTTEN TO!!!! The injectors the turbo the pump the filters... I checked on the water pump costs on the Dodge the Ford and the Gms.. The Ford's cost to replace the water pump was over 1500.00 Bucks!!! The GMs not much better at over 1200... The Dodge was less than 500... The Dodge can be done yourself on the side of the road in 20 minutes and only has 2BOLTS holding it on..I can do the fuel and and the air filters.. NO GLOW PLUGS!!!! With the Gms engine bay I could not even see the thing.. Forget the FORD!!! The darn cab must be removed from the chassis...This may not

Other issues with the 7.3: Glow Plugs and Glow plug relay.. Oil Leaks in the back of the heads. Oil pan washer leaks, cps sensors, HP Fuel pump leak on the valley of the engine..When towing a heavy load the automatic trans overdrive light will flash... The Trans shop will want to rebuild the transmission..

Id' just fix the line and fill it to the full line... Shoot, when I rebuilt engines the auto had to be refilled... Not to worry about flushing, filters, radiator etc....

RE: Looking for a different towing vehicle...

If you are buying new, the difference in what your current vehicle is worth vs what a new one will cost might buy you a whole lotta gas, plus the newer diesels will give you better towing mileage, but probably only 2-3 mpg's more, not to mention diesel fuel is more expensive too. It could end up costing you much more than the additional mpg's will offer. Grab a calculator & run some numbers to see for yourself. x2. It reminds me of when people go spend $10,000 on a small car for commuting because their truck gets 17-18mpg and the new car gets 30mpg. 15,000 mi's a year would take apr 7 yrs to cover the cost. Have you thought about your daily driving habits and would a diesel work? And how much do you tow? I'd run the nubers through a calculator. Not me man... I bought a 2002 ford escort zx2 that gets 31 mpg.. the car when I bought it last year had 11000 miles on it. I paid 3k for the car. It was not just the mpg difference but the mileage kept off the Cummins. Not only did I save fuel costs, but tire wear, not to mention the value of the Cummins. It is 7 years old with 72000 miles and book value is up 1500 for the mileage adjust. I could not see putting on 25k per year just going to and from work in a Dodge Dually. So not only the mpg difference 15 mpg vs 31, tires of 2000 now with the cost of tires, oil, filters etc... I figure in 7 years we saved a minimum of 7k....

RE: 4 wheel drive questions

you have a problem. When my 4x4 is engaged, all four tires turn, and it is instantainous Most 4x4s have the left front and the right rear engage. Mine has limited slip rear so 2 rear tires back and forth and 1 front....If you have all 4 locked up the thing will handle squirelly. My 78 z/28 had posi and when turning left onto a hiway the rocks on the crown of the road helped the entire rear end to swing ...

RE: $15,892.41

ANY of the big three diesels if a complete redo is needed, figure you are going to be in this range! With all of them having $500 injectors, thats 3500-4500 right there, IPs are in the 1-2G range, block is 3-4K in and of itself, another 20-30 hrs of labor........... Yeah, the Cummins has 2 fewer injectors, but the rest of it, is about the same cost including the labor. not much difference no matter how you slice it. As much as my 6.5td was a PITA for some, i was lucky, $50 injectors, IP at 700-800, pretty easy to work on. Yeah a bit low on power vs today........even the original B5.9 12v or T444E motors were easier to work on, better mpgs, would suspect similar noxious gas's....... are we really better off? marty Oh boy, I really could not care less about noxious gases. Just think what one Volcano eruption does. All the fumes since the begining of time that we have put out don't equal that of one eruption. Part of Nature..The Earth cleans itself up. Look at the Gulf, Mt. St.Helens, the tsunami in Japan. Do we really think we can have an effect?.

RE: 2 stroke oil in diesel

Sulfur is one of the contents that actually assisted in lubrication. When they moved to ultra low sulfur diesel fuel, well that lubricity was removed from the fuel. As a result, diesel fuel now is sometimes very dry and does not lube the pump and other parts as it should. It is that very dry fuel which is one of the suspected culprits in the high pressure fuel pump failures now being experienced by VW, Ford and GM which are running a CP 4 series Bosch pump. The 2 stroke oil works in older diesels, but cannot be used in any of the 2007 or newer motors (someone please correct if I have the year wrong here, I know there is a date point at which due to mechanical issues, the 2 stroke oil should not be used.) The Diesel Place.com site did a study of the various diesel fuel additives meant to add lubricity to diesel fuel. Result are found here. The study was done a few years back now, but is still relevant. The 2 stroke oil was #7 in effectiveness in their list of additives tested. A rehash of internet myths. Sulphur is not a lubricant, it is corrosive and the burning of it puts poison in the air. While it is true that the process of removing sulphur removes natural lubricants, the lubricants are added back to the fuel after the sulphur has been removed. Awhile ago I had a Cummins p-pump, (a mechanical injector pump) repaired because it was leaking engine oil from a seal. It definitely qualifies as an "older diesel". The pump had 750k miles on it, most of that time on ULSD. NOT ONE FUEL LUBED PART WAS OUT OF SPEC! That study is so bogus I can't believe anyone is dumb enough to buy it. First, the contention is that ULSD lacks lubrication. The author states it in the beginning, but offers no reference to that being true. He then uses fuel that is not available to the general public to test different additives. So, if he has this highly technical machine that tests lubricity, why didn't he test the fuel from several diesel pumps in the surrounding area to prove his theory that ULSD lacks lubricity? Why did he use fuel that can not be bought by diesel engine users? Why did he not test the lubricity of pump fuel with various additives? I just bought some 2 cycle oil for my boat. It was over $20 and not a name brand. Name brand oil is in the $26 to $30 range. Why in the world would you dump a quart of oil into the tank that does not have near the BTUs of diesel and costs more than a gallon of fuel? There is no logical way it could improve mileage by 2 mpg,or by any amount. Remember it has fewer BTUs than diesel. Lube the cylinder walls? Get serious, do you know anything about an internal combustion engine? Add lubrication to the IP? The fuel/oil is a 120:1 mixture. My outbourd requires 50:1 to lube the rod bearings, some engines require a higher percentage. A 120:1 mixture is laughable as a lubrication additive. Then there is the fact that Canada and California, with no fan fare, switched to ULSD before the transition started in the U.S. If ULSD was causing problems, there would have been plenty of evidence before the internet myths (which I believe were started by the additive companies) sprang up. Dump whatever you like into your fuel, it is your money. Poison in the AIR??? Everytime you exhale or fart YOU are poisoning the air. But Who cares... It is just a drop of water in an endless sea.. Sulfer never hurt anyone... look at all the sulfer put into the air since the earth began... we have got to get back to some sort of normalcy.. This Green Garbage is Hogwash and getting old REAL Quick.. Now, I think I will go dump 3 gallons of used oil in a hole in my back yard...

RE: Tow Vehicle Selection

One other thing I think about these days is serviceability. Just imagine the cost for an out of warranty Ford that needs a turbo or some other work. The CAB MUST BE lIfted off the Chassis!!! The GM is very tight as well. On the other hand however, the Dodge is so easy to get to EVERYTHING!. The water pump is 2 bolts on the Dodge! I swore to myself after owning a 96 lincoln Continental that had a timing chain going bad I would never have a vehicle that i could not work on. The entire engine and transmission had to be dropped to change the timing chains....CHAINS????? Yes like 6 of them.. The labor and parts to repair this engine was over 2500.00!!! Never again..

RE: Tow Vehicle Selection

I have a 1/2 Tundra and have never owned any of those trucks. After reading this I would be no closer to a decision haha. I just test drive all of them and go with the one that feels best, looks best, has the best features, and a dealer that gives me the best deal. As of right now I would lean toward Ford just because I like the looks but the others are nice too. I also like ford for political reasons...they didn't take any bail outs and stood on their own feet. The Bailout was NOT for Chrysler and GM. It was to keep them from going bankrupt thereby saving the UNIONS!. If they did go bankrupt, they could have renegotiated contracts and weaken the unions. Obamba needs union support. That's why I dropped out of my union. UNIONS=Destroy Jobs in America!

RE: Mountain Towing

Auto you won't need an eb... Manuel and long steep 6 percent grades, then YOU DO need a brake. What.....? A manual has a direct connection between the engine and rearend where as the automatic has the torque converter. The TC can be in an unlocked state and allow the vehicle to coast where a manual will keep the engine engaged and slow the vehicle....(somewhat without an EB) In either case, since the diesel doesn't have a throttle valve like a gasser, it won't have the effective engine braking that a gasser would. Going by personal experience. 3 PSD with autos and one Dodge Ram with a stick..towed the Sierras, the trinity alps, up thru Parleys Summit, all oner the mountainous west. I have never had the experience of the truck picking up speeds like I have had with the manuel. Just my experiences.

RE: Mountain Towing

Auto you won't need an eb... Manuel and long steep 6 percent grades, then YOU DO need a brake. We go the back side of Lake Tahoe on 89 with a stick. No matter how much we down shifted the truck would go up to REDLINE again within seconds. This made it necessary to hit the brakes to slow the descent. By the time we hit the bottom of the grade the brakes were smoking. The torque converter in the auto helped to keep our speed in check in our other Diesel Trucks.. I don't think you have the long steep grades in the east like we do out west.

RE: Used Diesel Horror Stories?

Bought a 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 CTD about 1.5 years ago, beautiful looking truck, with just over 100,000kms on it (so...60K miles??). Two weeks later I noticed that the transmission started slipping. Two more weeks later...I dropped $4800 to have it re-built as it would barely move. Thankfully, I managed to sell the truck before anything else came up....and I broke even. Phew...that one nearly cost me my 2nd wife! Should have checked the trans and went with a stick...

Let's face it... There really are no imports brands that can compete with the Big 3... TOYota?, Yes! it's a TOY!, Nissan Daniel Son,,, NOPE, Mitsibichi, got to be ITCHY...DATsoon?, Not really soon enough, HONDOW heck NO!! But CR says they are better, tufer, faster, ride and comfort are superior and they will OUT TOW our Cummins, Duramax and Powerstrokes..... I wonder why their subscribers are down.....
