RE: Thermostat changeover

Do a google. I got 1/2 million hits "hunter thermostat rv wiring". I'm sure if I google "brain surgery" I can find something on that too. However, I was looking for specific information to convert from Coleman-Mach to Hunter digital. Maybe you are different but I don't want to wade thru 1/2 million hits to find specific information. If you folks don't want to answer the question that is ok with me, but why bother telling other folks to "do a search" when I plainly stated I already had. To the people who actually try to answer an honest question, thank you very much. I guess I am too sensitive to even ask a question sometimes, but it does get a little tiresome to get condescending instructions as though I am an errant child. Maybe I am in the minority but I bet there are others who feel the same way.

Thermostat changeover

I have a Coleman-Mach analog thermostat in my Class C. I want to change over to a Hunter digital thermostat but cannot find a wiring diagram to do this. I had changed over in my previous fifth wheel but it was a Dometic and I believe it was different. Anyway has anyone changed from Coleman to Hunter, and where can I find instructions. I know someone on here is going to tell me to "do a search". I already have and cannot find what I am looking for. Any assistance appreciated.

RE: Helpful vendors or scam artists?

But we can't ignore every one of these warnings. We were on a trip towing a boat with our one-ton van. Stopped for gas at a station that was also a shop. Somebody came out and said we had a big bulge on an inside tire sidewall. We did. My question is, how did they see (from inside the shop) a bulge on an INSIDE tire sidewall?

RE: GPS recommendations

Thanks to all for your responses. This is the kind of information I needed to help me decide on a new GPS, or if I really need to just learn how to double check what I already have.

RE: GPS recommendations

Did you have new maps in your Garmin, or the original ones..:h.. It didn't let you down, if you have not kept it up to date. I had updated about 15 months ago - don't know if the "new" maps would have helped or not. Both of the addresses have been there for seveal years but it is possible someone had corrected them recently. I fully realize I am somewhat at fault for not checking and double checking. There is obviously no perfect system but I am hoping for something more compatible with my Class C. Garmin puts out quarterly updates every year for their mapping software. Typically I plot my route on their free mapping software incl all turns. Add in all my POI incl fuel places, specialty stops etc. We always have a hard copy map with us that has our route highlighted. At 15 months you have missed at least 4 updates, possibly 5. A GPS is only a tool and is only as good as the person operating it.... I have to pay for my updates. 5 updates cost more than a new GPS. As I said earlier, it is MY FAULT for not checking, but my question has to do with RV specific GPS units. Since the GPS is only as good as the person operating it, maybe I shoud just stay home.

GPS recommendations

Looking for recommendations for a new "RV friendly" GPS. As I posted in the Class C forum, my older Garmin Nuvi let me down last week on a trip to the North Carolina mountains. It seems that the campground address was similar to another street address in Franklin NC and the GPS routed me to the wrong address. That would usually be no big deal, but it put us on a long mounatain road with no place to turn around the 31 ft class C with toad attached, and we wound up 30 miles north of where we needed to be. All of this has started me looking for a GPS specifically for RV's to keep away as much as possible from narrow roads, dirt roads etc. I realize that a GPS is only as good as the map information it contains but does anyone have a recommendation for a newer GPS that is better suited to RV travel?

RE: GPS warning

If the GPS told you the fastest way or shortest way to get ti your point of destination is crossing a lake (obviously without a bridge) would you do it?? You have to apply a little common sense, and paper maps, when using a GPS... Don't know if this was directed at me, but I do agree common sense is needed. However, since I did not know anything about the area until I actually got here I don't know what else I could have done other than the prior phone call I mentioned. In my case, maybe common sense ain't all that common!

RE: GPS warning

Was the address location wrong or did the GPS just try to take a short cut? I think the problem happened because the address of the RV park(Riverbend) was very similar to the name of the residential street that the GPS took me to, which was a mobile home park. The park owner gave me the GPS co-ordinates, but this was AFTER I got to the park. As I said, a prior phone call on my part would have prevented the problem. Hard lesson learned.

GPS warning

Just wanted to relay some information to warn folks about putting too much trust in their GPS. Our Garmim Nuvi is a few years old and is NOT RV specific, so maybe some of the newer units are better. Anyway we set off on a trip yesterday on what was supposed to be a 110 mile trip to Franklin NC from our home in NE Georgia. I had programmed the address of the campground into the GPS and took off on the trip. As we were getting into Franklin the GPS took us into the middle of downtown and into a RESIDENTIAL area just north of town. We soon discovered that we were obviously in the wrong place but there was nowhere to turn around our 31 ft MH with toad attached. We wound up on a steep, narrow mountain road that took us 30 miles north of where we needed to be. It was not pleasant to say the least and we wasted gas and time to get to the proper location. Next time I will double check with maps and phone call to campground before taking off to unknown locations. When we finally got to the campground the lady in the office said "this happens all the time". A prior phone call on my part would have saved a lot of grief. I am now checking into an RV specific GPS but some of the reviews don't sound very promising. Sorry for the long post but check and double check before leaving. Any suggestions as to what type of GPSA to get?

RE: Toadless C Owners, Do You Feel Limited?

For those of you that don't own a toad. Do you feel like you have to break camp every time you want to go to a restaurant or tourist attraction? Or do you just plan your day so that you're gone during the day hours and stay put for the evening at the campground? Do you feel limited vs. pulling a travel travel and doing your sightseeing with the tow? Since I DO own a toad, maybe I should not answer this. But the bottom line for the above question is convenience of the individual involved. In our case, we already owned a Honda before we traded our fifth wheel for a Class C, so the only extra expense we had was the tow bar etc, which was somewhat offset by selling our fifth wheel hitch. For us, having a toad equals more convenience. Sometimes we like to do things apart from each other, namely I play golf while she goes shopping. She drops me off at the golf course and goes on her way. That would not work with our 31 ft Class C since she doesn't feel comfortable driving it in downtown traffic or looking for a parking space in small towns etc. So like most other questions involving RV's it becomes very personal, just like Fifth wheels versus Class C's or travel trailers etc. What someone else does really doesn't matter except to look at their experiences and see other options that maybe you had not considered. Good luck with your choice either way.

RE: TV Antenna

I put a Jack on my Class C it is this onejack it was very easy to install it took about 15 min. all instructions are in the box, just 2 pins on the shafts and the coax all done.I got it @ amazom for about $42 it is much better than the old batwing it is smaller and dosn't bang around on the roof. I also got a lot better reception with it. this was one of the easyest and best mod that I have done to my Class C. Thanks very much for the information. This is exactly the kind of information I needed to help me decide. Think I can buy one from an RV shop nearby. Probably costs a little more but I have dealt with them before and they are easy to work with. Thanks again. Hmmm... This link, just like the link in the above quote says that it comes with an amplifier: http://www.kingcontrols.com/jack/jack_replacement_head.asp I guess the confusion (at least on my part) is because the antenna itself says it comes with a "built-in" amplifier. The complete kit with mast etc comes with the wall-mount amplifier etc. In my case, I would not need the wall-mount part since I can use my existing amp which is already installed in the MH. My question about amps was whether to upgrade my present unit or keep what I have. Anyway what I will probably do is to purchase the antenna only and give it a try and only upgrade amps if necessary. Thanks for your input.

RE: TV Antenna

We installed the Jack on our unit and we love it. Here's a little write-up on the installation. http://rvroadtrip.us/library/jack_antenna_install.php https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-hAEMNnkATnA/TxjEBB0RxdI/AAAAAAAAKpg/Rr49fvXLeso/s800/2012-01-19_16-49-42_766.jpg Great information. Thanks a lot.

RE: TV Antenna

If you had googled the Jack antenna you would have found that it comes with an amplifier: http://www.kingcontrols.com/jack/jack_aftermarket_antenna.asp Not necessarily. If I buy one, I will not buy the complete unit, only the antenna itself. It does NOT come with the amp unless you buy the entire unit.

RE: TV Antenna

The biggest improvement you can make to antenna performance is a high quality pre amp. Any suggestions as to name brand, price, where to buy, etc?

RE: TV Antenna

Just curious, why would the reception differ based on class RV? None that I know of - just a dumb question on my part. Sorry. In that case, I replaced my batwing with a Jack (on my 5er) last month and have been very happy with it. Replacement was very simple. Aiming was different but not too tough to figure out. Thanks for the information. I am going to check with the RV shop later this week for their pricing etc. Will re-post if I make the purchase to let others know how it worked out.

RE: Tire question

Anybody else with experience with Capitol HT tires? These were just placed on my 2001 RT Versatile 200. On a 120 mile round trip last weekend, I felt like I was driving on Gummy Worms at times, but perhaps it was the wind or road. I googled Chinese tires as I've learned from rv.net to not get those, but it seems many American companies have their tires manufactured in China anyway. One article said that may be, but you can trust the American standard, regardless of where it's made. I am the original poster about these tires. Bought the Jayco Class C last August and have taken a few fairly short trips since then. Furthest trip about 175 miles one way. Anyhow, so far so good. I have kept a close watch on the tires and kept them inflated properly and do not overload the MH. I cannot compare the handling of these to other tires since I have not owned another Class C, but mine seem to be ok as far as I can tell. Wind will certainly affect the handling but I don't see how it would affect the ride quality. Good luck and hopefully someone else will comment soon.
