RE: Williston Wal-Mart cracking down...

From the Article: ...the camping was causing safety, noise, litter and property problems... This is what happens when people abuse a privilege. As mentioned earlier, the offer made by Sam Walton all those many years ago was intended to be a convenience for a VERY short stay... overnight or two at the most, NOT a destination. When the store's bottom line started to suffer as result of the large number of rigs in the parking lot and the "issues" associated with those rigs and the people occupying them then the store had to do something about it. The store is there to sell "stuff" and make a profit NOT to provide free accommodations for longer-term oil workers. The municipality needs to step up to the plate and work with or "entice" the oil companies to provide somewhere for all these people to park their rigs that would provide the most basic services... Water, Sewer and electricity in order to ensure a relatively healthy "Work Camp".

RE: No CABLE TV in travel trailer

For the short term if your refrigerator is on the awning side just pop off the access cover and plug in to the outlet provided for the refrigerator. Later on you could have someone tap off that circuit and put a waterproof outlet right next to that bay for the exterior outlet.

RE: Built a new battery rack, what do you guys think?

If you wanted to you could make that top tray longer and put another one up there! you could have a bank of four!

RE: Want to swap generators...

IMO Onan is a good choice. I have first hand experience with the dependability and durability of the Onan gennys. During Hurricane Irene I used one to power the basics in two houses as well as the well water pump. Now this was no ordinary Onan. I FOUND it in my grandfather's carport. There was no telling how long it had been there. It was covered with dirt, dust, crud and crap. Who knows when he got it. Five years ago... ten years ago? No telling! He did not even remember it was there! It was a little beat up and the fuel pump was inop. Looked like it had been removed from an RV more than ten years ago. Well... we tinkered with it a little, changed the oil, replaced the circuit breaker, filed the points, put a gas tank above it for gravity feed on the fuel and it fired right up. Ran rough for about an hour or so, mellowed out and then worked reliably for six days. Not often do engines like that fire right up after sitting for so long without being used... just collecting dust! I also used the Onan in my RV to power the neighbor's houses (shuttling up and down the road to keep freezers frozen and basements pumped out) as well. Both gennys ran non-stop about 12 hours per day for six days without a lick of trouble (short of needing to refuel)!

RE: Shipping Wars- interesting selection of tow vehicles/loads

Don't think there's one "reality" show out there that doesn't insult the industry they're portraying! Awwwwww... I have to disagree. Seems to me that Rick and the crew at Pawn Stars does a pretty good job portraying a positive light on their (the Pawn) industry. They seem to be very fair with their dealings and have even offered more for an item than the customer asks when they know the item is worth MUCH more than the customer knows. They seem to shed a positive light on the Pawn industry. On the other hand HARDCORE Pawn... makes it seem like more than half the people in Detroit are freaking NUTS! Then there is Rick's Restorations... Ie. "American Restoration". Here is another reality show that displays a positive portrayal of the restoration industry. These guys are FANTASTIC and there is generally no shenanigans on the show just for the cameras.

RE: Shipping Wars- interesting selection of tow vehicles/loads

Here is what I want to know........has Americans become so stupid (yes I'm included) that we find this entertaining????Really? Pawn Star's, Gold Rush, Storage Wars, really? What happened to real shows and real movies? Now I do enjoy Survivor and the one were they go all over the World following clues, I forget the name. If I was in better shape I would try out for them, be afraid my fat ### would be lying on the beach gasping for air! :o :E There's a sight that would give the kiddies nightmares! :B Don And I find shows like Survivor and Amazing Race to be fantastically ridiculous... to each his own. As for the Shipping wars show... I saw in the latest episode the van died on the interstate. Overheated towing enclosed trailer with a big (commercial style) video game inside. Driver babied it a while but she gave up the ghost and he had to temporary lease a Dually Dodge in order to finish the trip. He might have gotten away with it if it had been an E-450 but that van he was using was just not stout enough for the type of work he demanded of it.

RE: Destination - Savannah - tips?

There are several tours available in Savannah. My favorite was the haunted tour. They take you around after dark and show you all the haunted places in town. Lots of history there. Some of it neat and some of it objectionable but all of it is as real as the earth! It is one of the oldest cities in the country and THE largest historic district on the register. Back in the day each one of the squares had a specific purpose. The first scene of Forrest Gump was filmed in one of the Squares. Do not look for the bus though because the bus service and the stop were made up for the movie. The film company did leave the bench with the city after the movie was filmed. The Book (and subsequent movie) were written based on true events that took place in the city. This Old House renovated one of the old historic residences there.

RE: Voltage drop on Turn Signal Circuit.

Here is what I have done so far: Disassembled the rear light cover on the rig and tested all the lights. There are 4 red lights, one white light and two plate lights. The white light is for the backup circuit--- that works properly. The plate lights seem to work properly. The 4 red lights (two on each side) are for brake, turn and running lights on the outboard light and running only on the inboard light. The lights are sealed units much like found on dump trucks and such that have three little plug holes in them. The connector on the wiring harness has the contacts and plug in to the lighting unit. I have removed and reinstalled all the lights in the rear panel so the contacts have been manipulated. They have some sort of grease on them already that seems to have prevented corrosion. The wiring from the rear panel is a spaghetti-mess of about 5 feet more cabling than needed. It twists back and forth at the rear frame horns and then makes it's way down the frame. The part that I am having the most trouble with is the trailer plug. The running lights have sufficient power. It is the brake/turn that is deficient. I tested using the ground on the plug and then I used a test lead directly from the frame with the same results so I am confident it is not a ground problem. The rear lights are grounded from a lead that comes from the front of the vehicle which I have yet to chase back. It has been raining all day so I have not gone out to do any more diagnosing today. I already knew about the fuse in the engine compartment. All the fuses were the first thing I checked. Does anyone know if the E-450 cutaway van chassis is wired for the tail lights separately from the trailer lights?

Voltage drop on Turn Signal Circuit.

I have a significant voltage drop on the turn signal circuit of my 2004 Four Winds Fun Mover (Class C) on the E-450 Chassis. The front works fine but the rear has the voltage drop enough that the turn signals are not much brighter than the running lights AND the trailer plug turn signals are barely visible. Any thoughts about where the problem might be or where I should look first? I did notice that the manufacturer wired the tail lights, turn signals, etc at the rear of the rig in to the circuit that is fused by the "TRAILER" fuse under the hood. Is it possible that Four Winds wired the rig incorrectly?

RE: Generator starting by itself?

My generator did this several times last winter. Then one day I found that the remote start switch inside the RV would not work any longer. I checked everything out and finally had to pull all the wiring from the remote starter switch back to the generator. That is when I found it... the wire had rubbed on the frame and broke the insulation. Moisture must have gotten in which obviously caused the problem until finally the wire corroded in two, breaking the continuity to the switch. I replaced the wire and have had no trouble with the generator starting on it's own ever since.

RE: Hot Water Heater not working on gas side

I have a similar problem and after messing with it for several days I found out that the wire from the circuit board to the igniter was damaged. It just pulled right out of the back of the igniter. I stripped a little insulation off the end and shoved it back in tight and the heater fired right up and burned properly. One of these days I need to get a new igniter.

RE: Canadian Couple missing since July

Unfortunately I could not find the original thread and a second one that had been opened had been locked so I started this one a while back to keep it out there. As do you I think about these people (maybe not as often) but frequently. I feel very sad for the family and hope that at some point they will be found so the family will have closure. I am also curious about what has become of the individual(s) that were arrested relating to this crime. I am also curious as to the outcome of the RCMP's bungling aspects of the investigation. As for the family... If they read this or if someone they know reads this I would like them to know that I wish them peace in this trying time and speedy resolution to the matter. Maybe "Unsolved Mysteries" should pick up the story to try to stir up some information. Well it has been a year since I last posted to this thread and I had virtually forgotten about it until today. I do not know why but I woke up this morning and the first thing in my mind was this couple and a burning desire to find out what happened to them. Does anyone out there know what happened to them? Are there any articles with any updates to this story?

RE: Highway Truck lost a wheel!

When I was in the Air Force and stationed in Germany I worked in the base tire shop. One of the other guys there had to change all eight tires on a trailer so he ordered the tires and started pulling the old ones off. Some block head switched one of the rims at some point and one of the rims was slightly smaller than the other seven. He did not notice. They were all one-peice rims, not split rims. He changed the tires on the rims and as he was putting the rim back on the trailer when the rubber slipped off the steel and blew the tire and 110psi of air pressure in his face. Scared the heck out of him and scuffed him up a bit but he was not hurt badly. He had to stop working in the tire shop... was too scared to work on the big tires any more. My first Air Force assignment was in Florida. There was a guy working in the shop that had several scars all the way up his arm and in to his shoulder. The story went that he was airing up a split rim truck tire and the locking ring was not seated properly. He had not removed the valve core from the tube. He noticed the ring slipping so he tried to release the air pressure and the chuck came off the valve. The tire was in a tire cage and he reached in to reconnect the chuck when the ring came off and the tire blew. It broke his arm in about four places... compound fractures! He never worked on tires again. Those truck tires are nothing to mess with and everything to respect. There is over 100psi pressure in them and they weigh about 200 pounds each plus the rim. When they let loose on the road they are traveling at about 60 miles per hour and they are nothing more than a runaway missile of destruction. Just the tread ripping off can kill and maim. If just the tread hits your car it can TEAR IT UP! and cause you to loose control!

RE: Highway Truck lost a wheel!

here's a video of a similar situation, but this poor guy was just standing there pumping gas when what looks like both wheels of a dually run him over. ouch. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVF4ITTlebwWow! What do you think are the chances of a dually running right up between the car and the pumps and smacking the guy just standing there!?

RE: Highway Truck lost a wheel!

Thay is the exact reason I don't ride beside trailertrucks. Imagine IF you had been 3' away from him when it ran off, and hit that hard with both of you doing 65 mph. Not a fun day.I am in NY right now and just Today in the news there was a report about a flatbed tractor/trailer that threw a wheel which landed on top of a car being driven by a 80 year old lady. CRUSHED the car and killed the driver. As of 6pm Eastern time traffic was still tied up for at least 4 miles. So yes you were lucky! Someone could have been killed!

RE: Poor Guy (apparently new DP owner)

I'm thinkin' the driver probably should have taken a break and allowed the weather to clear up a bit. Schedules are fine, but not at great personal risk. RVing is supposed to be for relaxation and enjoyment of the trip as well as the distination. Don't take the trip so seriously that you can't take a break when needed ... Dan Stevens I was thinking the same thing. When conditions change that you are out of your element or comfort zone the next exit or rest stop is your best friend... safer for you and every other motorist on the road. Unfortunately the way you describe this guy's driving it sounds like he was a hazard to other motorists and he should have waited until the weather cleared before entering the gorge.

RE: The Hartford Insurance Co. backed out of a legit quote

I do not understand why your progressive policy went up 50%. I have had Progressive since 2003 and now have it on a car, pickup, two motorcycle and a fulltimer's policy on the RV. My rates went down about 5% this year and I finally qualify for the zero deductible plan this year.

RE: Yellow Dot - a life saving thing

The best and simplest thing to do is what rk911 suggested. Have a card or card sized paper made up with a list of your meds and the contact number for your health care provider or whoever has your medical records in storage. Put that card right behind your driver license in your wallet. If you are unconscious the first responders will pull your DL during their assessment (or have LE or FD do it for them) during their assessment in order to document the run. I was an EMT in the Air Force and the very first thing we were trained to check after we established patient stability was the wallet for ID. Placing that card in the same slot as the driver license is the best thing to do. Now some say that if you are in a car wreck your purse or wallet may be lost in the mess. In most cases the LEO in charge of the scene will either themselves or assign another officer to search the scene for ID, purses, wallets, etc in order to identify the victims. Believe it or not this is important because there are MANY reports that LE, PD, Medic, hospital, etc must fill out and that information must be as accurate as possible. The next best (and nationally acceptable) thing to do is place that same information in a large pill bottle with the label of the last medication still on it (because that label contains your provider information AND your pharmacy information) in either your refrigerator or freezer. Leave a note in the front noting the location. This is something that we were also trained to check first. Of course medicalert badges, bracelets or necklaces were at the top of the search list but are usually easily found on the primary assessment. As mentioned, these other things such as the yellow dot or whatever are regional and not well known throughout the first-responder industry so while they are a good idea it is better to stick to the tried and true, nationally recognized methods and use the regional ideas to supplement them.

RE: Replacing 21' A & E awning

There are a couple of threads on the DIY forum that explain how a few of us have replaced our awning fabric. You might want to check those out. I replaced mine last October/November. In a nutshell what i did was to drill out the end cap so the channel where the awning is slid in to was opened and the old fabric could be slid out. I unrolled the old awning, set the lock in the extended position, cut the old awning fabric off, slid the new fabric on at the top and roller simultaneously and then inserted a short screw where I cut the channel in order to prevent the new fabric from possibly sliding out... although the likelihood of that happening is slim. I only removed the top of one bracket and never removed the roller or unwound it.
