RE: Anyone have experience with Portable Ice Makers?

We loved ours until the weather got hot and we had to run air conditioning. The Emerson we had put a LOT of hot air out.
It was wonderful having the ice, but the heat was hard to get rid of.

RE: From KC to ?

Right around the corner you have the Jackson County Parks. We like Long View and Blue Springs. You cannot tell you are close to the city even though it is moments away.
Long View has a nice playground. I don't remember if Blue Springs does or not since our grand kids are too old.

RE: Walmart batteries....

One nice thing about dealing with Wal-Mart........they are almost everywhere!
We get all our prescriptions through them.....so convenient when on a long trip and you need refills.....
They have done a great job of putting mom and pop businesses out of business all over the country - wonderful.
In case you haven't noticed, this has been going on for much longer than Walmart has been around. Unfortunately in this day and age, big box stores that give you everything under one roof are much more able to offer lower prices and still make a profit. Can't blame Target, Walmart, Kmart, Costco, etc for following a good business plan. Times change for business and customers.
Prices continue to rise in this country and disposable income seems to fall every year. You can't really blame someone for wanting to spend less on everyday items and you can't blame a business for offering these items in such a way that the customers shop there.
Well said dmatt.

RE: Life Style? Doing what?

We have been retired and full-timing for seven months now. I still have rush rush rush days, but it is getting much better. One of the things that seems to have helped me to slow down was the price of gas. As I started driving slower to save on gas (with a motor home that is a joke) I have slowed down other parts of my thought process.
For the first time, yesterday I sat outside in a chair and started a book. Within 15 minutes I have fallen asleep. In the past that would have been impossible.
It takes time, but it will come. Don't try to force it. Just let it happen naturally.
Enjoy the new life.

RE: First trip out for the season

Ah! The season begins. Now everyone wants to go camping. Looks like a very good time.
Will he give me fishing lessons. All I have caught so far this year were the same size or smaller. :)

We carry a couple of hundred in a bolted down fireproof safe for emergencies only.
Other than that, we use debit or credit cards.

RE: Complete Newbies

I have a further suggestion.
This is just my thoughts. I would not rent a MH to try it out if it is a class C and you are interested in a class A. I think you would be unhappy with the room and perhaps lose interest. I know if we had tried a class C first, we would never had continued to RV.
Now looking back I can see that one day when we get older perhaps we might downsize to a class C. There are many very nice ones out there. But for us going from a three bedroom 2 1/2 bath home to a 35 foot MH with only one bath was all the loss of space we could deal with at first.

RE: Complete Newbies

We were in the same spot as you except that we had friends that had a motor home. We took one weekend trip with them and decided we would like to try it. That was five years ago.
We bought a used 35 foot motor home. The cost was less plus we did not have the issues of all the bugs many new ones have. The previous owner had them taken care of.
We used it for weekend trips at first and then a couple of week long vacations since we were both still working.
Last September we both retired, sold our house to one of our children and went full time. We had been told and found it to be true that if you are not wealthy don't plan on traveling and seeing all the sites constantly. It is expensive.
We love being full timers and have found that staying in one place for a couple of months or even longer at a time gives us the opportunity to really see the area in our car. We can go and see things in the car that we would never be able to see in the motor home.
My biggest suggestion would be to start with a GOOD used unit until you see if you really like it. That will allow you to determine what you like an don't like before buying the RV or your dreams. You may find you love it or you may find that you or your wife hate it.
Good luck and perhaps we will see you down the road.
