RE: Gun shows???

Mostly collectibles and rare guns. Looking at a picture of a collectible you want to buy on the internet just does not do it. At a show you can inspect the gun and look the seller in the eye.
Common firearms... Shows are for shopping, not the actual buy.
Ammunition can be cheaper at shows.

RE: 4wd for towing stability?

So a friend of mine sometimes uses 4wd with unlocked differential to have more stability while towing. What are your thoughts on that?
Does he hang fuzzy dice from his mirror also? That would have the same effect on towing stability.
Let your friend do whatever he wants. You do not have to mimic him.

RE: whats your career?

Firefighter for 24 years, then medical reassignment to a fire planner/analyst. Then an environmental planner. Retired for 6 months. Ordered by the boss to find a job (she had to go to work and thought it was not fair.)
Now I am an eligibility caseworker for the county welfare department.

RE: MVUM can be deceiving

I have found several roads clearly delineated on the map as open to vehicles, but the road does not exist on the ground, or if existed at all it is nearly obliterated by age now. When I pointed these phantom roads out to the local FS they told me every open road was driven and mapped by their field crews. I replied I don't know what the field crews told you, but the reality on the ground suggests the map was pencil whipped.

RE: camping grounds 100 from Sacramento ca

Be more specific.
Do you want fully developed full hookup site, public campgrounds, or boondocking?
Near water? mountains? long views?
What do you intend to do? Explore all the local sights or just lounge around camp and relax? Do you want privacy and solitude or group activities and socialization? Hiking? paddling, biking? wildlife watching?
Post back please and we can suggest places to your liking.

RE: Do You Use Premium Gas When Towing ?

My 2005 F150 got slightly better MPG on premium (0.3-0.4 mpg). Not enough to overcome the price differential of premium. I did not notice any difference in power.
My 2008 Tundra gets the same MPG on premium, and no apparent difference in power.
I run the gennies on mid range gas (they seem to like it better, and my local small engine repair shop recommends a higher octane). So I carry mid range gas in the jeep cans.

RE: What is boondocking and how to do this.

I am more of a purist. To me boondocking is outside any developed or designated campground. Many FS and BLM campgrounds do not have water or dumps, but are still a designated campground. I consider that staying in a campground, not boondocking.
My definition of boondocking is setting up camp out in the woods where no signs, tables, outhouses, fire rings, etc exist. No map identifies the site as a campground. The new MVUM in the national forests have reduced the availability of places to boondock, but many opportunities still exist.

RE: Danica

She isn't a competitive driver and never will be. But she was brought into NASCAR for a reason. Her actions are scripted for crowd appeal or disgust....either adds to the NASCAR ratings :)
Just like JR. He's a hasbeen but has crowd appeal and is a definite asset to NASCAR viewers.
You hit it exactly. NASCAR is a business first and a 'sport' second. Many now say it no longer is a sport, merely a scripted entertainment show.

RE: Mount Shasta Area?

Spend the first night in a developed or private campground. Spend the next day driving around the back roads looking for a boondocking spot. You probably will not find that picture perfect creekside spot with solitude and privacy (they exist, but are hard to find one that many others have not already found and currently occupied). After you find a suitable spot return to your rig and move to the spot you found.
You really only need an open flat spot big enough to park your rig. Preferably near the end of a dead end forest spur road so there is no traffic.
I live south of there in the Almanor area, so am more familiar with the Lassen area. I have only boondocked a couple of times in the Shasta area, and those were just spots to spend the night while traveling through.

interesting news ( I think?)

I just heard from an old coworker my 1995 thesis was dragged out of the old archives, dusted off, and is being cited as a source in another peer-reviewed and (hopefully) published paper by a friend of hers. I have not read the new paper yet, I am trying to get a draft copy.
My thesis was nerdy, heavy to probability theory, monte-carlo analysis, and involved a lot of multivariable regression. I have probably forgotten most of the math I used:? I remember I had to buy a new computer for my home, as my old 486 machine could not handle the calculations.

RE: Whacha readin' now?

Journal of a Voyage with Vitus Bering. By Georg Steller.
Steller accompanied Bering on his voyages to Alaska and the Arctic.
Just finished Lord Jim. What a dark and depressing book!

RE: Movie flubs

Like a major battle scenes where ancient armies are locked in sword and spear combat. Inevitably the astute observer will see either a wristwatch or a tan line where a watch would be.
Numerous scenes purportedly filmed in some remote foreign country, and a helicopter in the scene will have a N number on the tail. The first letter(s) are country of aircraft registration. N is the US.
Everyone recognizes the tropical sounding bird call used in African jungle scenes. The bird used is a South American parrot.

RE: Drivers License Renewal

Did mine online. 5 days later got new license in the mail. Next time I gotta go in for new pic.
Same in CA.
My last two renewals were through the mail. My license photo is now so old it does not look like me. I suspect I will have to go in person eventually.

RE: Carlisle Tires

I replaced my cheap generic china tires with Carlisles. From my research the only Carlisles I have read about with issues are "C"`s and "D"`s. I have "E" rated Carlisle that have over 7k miles on them with about 4 long trips, 2 of them over 2k miles each. and 12 straight hours of driving one of those being in the mid 90`s. they still look good and show no signs of failure. I keep them aired up to 75 psi.
Same here. I have a set of 4 Carlisle load E, 4 years old and about 8000 miles on them. Stil have good tread, no problems. Keep them aired and torqued properly, protect from the sun when in storage, and occasionally rotate you will have no problems. All tires, regardless of brand, will have early failure if not properly maintained.

RE: Outback Steakhouse - Thumbs Down

I agree. I have eaten at several across the country. Not by choice, others insist.
They consistently overcook their food as a corporate policy. They use so many rubs and marinades and flavorings in their meat one cannot identify what the entree is supposed to be.
Given a choice I would rather never patronize them again.

RE: Any interesting places to stop on I-5 North?

Griffith park & observatory are right off 5. If you've never "done" LA, really, you oughta! It has even more to offer than Redding.
That is strictly a matter of opinion.

RE: Question on Leases

Depends on state laws. In most cases a change of ownership does not invalidate existing contracts. Any prospective bidders for the property have an obligation to review all existing contracts on the property and adjust their bids accordingly.
