RE: US 212 thru Montana

We've used 212 many times over the years, different hours of the day & night. It is 60 miles shorter and about an hour quicker. There are 24 hour diesel and gas stations at Alzada, Broadus and Lame Deer. It is pretty desolate in places. Our most common problem is deer on the hiway at night-(usually in the fall.)

RE: Time differences

OK - Monument Valley/ Gouldings is on the Navajo Reservation - in May they will be on Mountain Daylight Saving time. Bryce Canyon will be on Pacific Daylight time so on your route from Bryce to Monument you will lose 1 hour! Good luck. Do you need/want route advice for this portion of your visit? If Bryce Canyon is in Utah, how could they be Pacific Time? Did I miss something again?

RE: 10 year rule

Just one other question, you stated you drove around the park before you went into the office, and then they asked if that was your truck. Did the park have signs saying guests need to check in office before entering? Most parks do. I know mine all have multiple signs regarding visitors entering the park without registering. When we get people who ignore the signs, someone from our staff usually sees them driving around and reports the vehicle back to the office. When someone comes in we also ask if that is their vehicle. If it is, we politely tell them they will not be welcome to stay at our park. If they can't follow that simple rule, why should we expect them to follow any other? Just another possibility on why you were not greeted with open arms. If I take a "windshield survey" of your park before I go to the office I will not be welcome?

RE: Glacier NP to Butte

If Butte is your destination, it may be shorter to take MT 200 from Clearwater to MT 141 to U.S 12 over McDonald Pass to Helena. You could then use I 15 to Butte. This route shouldn't be a problem with a MH and toad. Of course, shorter may not always be faster! Just another option.

RE: Beware of Goober's Service in Beaver, Utah on I-70 exit 112

Seems they've been "helping" their business in similar ways for a long time. We stopped there in June of 2002, traveling with my wife's sister (& family) and brother (& family) in 3 seperate vehicles. While stopped for gas, someone from the garage suggested to DW's sister that a problem existed with her tires, but could be remedied at the garage with replacement tires. She asked her brother & myself to take a look, and while we checked the tires, the helpful garage employee took notice of us, and mysteriously vanished. Being unable to question the garage guy further, we were left to assume, they perhaps were "preying" on unsuspecting females, traveling without adult males. Rightly or wrongly, that was our conclusion. BTW, SIL's tires lasted another 25,000 miles with no problems.

RE: First Come First Serve Campsites

I can't think of ANY forest service campgrounds in this state where reservations are accepted, other than the group sites at a few campgrounds. They are ALL "first come, first served", AFAIK. I'm not sure about State Parks, we rarely use them. Mowermech, perhaps you need to expand your horizens westward a bit. Nearly all USFS campgrounds in Gallatin County and many in western Montana use the recreation.gov reservation system. There are over 100 cg's listed. Several (approximately 15) Montana State Parks used a reservation system for the first time this past summer.http://mt.gov/tourism/parks.asp Just thought you'd like to know. Your "recreation.gov" link shows up on my computer as invalid, but a check of "reservation.gov", and a search for reserveable campsites near Hungry Horse, MT gives a list consisting of the Group sites at Emery Bay Campground on Hungry Horse Reservoir, and some possible reservations at Lid Creek Campground (also group sites), and a whole bunch of CABINS that can be reserved in the surrounding area. The rest of the campgrounds, such as Murray Bay and Lost Johnny Point and Doris Creek do not have reserveable sites. A quick check of the campgrounds in Gallatin County reveals that there are, again, many CABINS that can be reserved, and some campgrounds have sites that can be reserved, AND many "first-come-first-served sites. Again, we rarely use State Parks (except for Cooney Reservoir), so I don't know what they have going on. Sorry the links don't work. You may have to enter www.recreation.gov into your browser;you should be able to search the Montana FS rv, tent, or trailer sites and of the 160 some reservable facilities, 40 or so are campgrounds. Having been in many of these, we've observed about 80% are reservable with 20% "walk-up" or 1st come 1st served. The mt.gov/tourism/parks website lists most sites at Cooney Reservoir SP as reservable, with 4 listed as "walk-up only." I'm not trying to pick a fight:B--we have to use the recreation.gov system a lot as weather and other factors dictate when we can go camping.Since we can't plan very far ahead, we've used it a lot at many nearby USFS cgs. Happy searching!

RE: Montana Highway 41

41 is a very decent road. Parts of it have been widened and resurfaced over the last few years. Not a lot of traffic, and no hills. Mostly through farm and ranch country. Should save you some time.

RE: Leashes Please!!!!!!!

I agree 100% but the real problem is campgrounds that do not VIGOROUSLY enforce leash laws." No, the real problem IS the lazy slobs who refuse to be resposible pet owners!

RE: Planning to boondock near Wall, S.D?

Fortunateley, my spouse and I must wait a few years before qualifying as 60 or over........But thanks for the info. It IS a very pretty area. We took in the Badlands NP on a trip several years ago-before buying the 'camper.' Our biggest reason for usually boondocking is seeing no need to pay for what we already have with us--such as tables, fire box, water, toilet, etc etc. Everything but the place to park-which in this case would be worth the 3 bucks!

Planning to boondock near Wall, S.D?

My DW and I mostly enjoy boondocking in out-of-the-way places. In case anyone is considering this spot near Wall, S.D.--- http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=107850408591787591444.0000011215f0d3a7330f4&hl=en&om=1&z=11&ll=43.912734,-102.243576&spn=0.210724,0.385208 We were dissapointed that this review doesn't mention it is used for a national grassland grazing lease; about 250 pairs by my count, plus about 7 or 8 bulls. I don't have a problem with leasing public land for grazing---just with recommending camping there!. I know cows-they are incredibly curious or nosy. They will not leave your rig alone--with licking, slobering, and scratching their itches on it. I don't camp with our cows and driving 350 miles to spend the night in someone else's pasture was a big letdown. Also, the access road is poorly located on a hill- giving poor visibility to other traffic whilst one parks to open the entrance gate. The road into the grassland is NOT maintained and as of July 13th,2010 it is one moderate rain storm from being totally washed out and impassable. True, however, is that the view is simply incredible--just don't plan on spending the night without several hundred 'guests.' I know info on the internet is always "buyer beware," but thought this should be added to the review/recommendation in the above link.

RE: Travel in Montana and the Dakota's - roads under water

O.K. I understand. We're near the Headwaters of the Missouri, so can't really guage the downstream.......it is one long ol' river. Interesting thing with Ft. Peck. My wife & I were there in '02 and water level was probably 20 to 30 feet from the spillway-which had 3" to 4" inch trees growing in it since it had been years since it'd been used. It was hard to imagine it as ever being 'full.' We just knew it could never refill again in our lifetime...........What do we know?

RE: Travel in Montana and the Dakota's - roads under water

I don't know of a single campground along the Missouri that isn't under water or in danger of flooding right now. I drove along a portion of the Missouri today and can name several that seem to be doing fine. Perhaps, depends on your definition of "danger of flooding?"

RE: Travel in Montana and the Dakota's - roads under water

the winter snow melt from the Cascades and the Rockies hasn't really gotten under way yet. God have Mercy... Most if not all of this water needs to flow to the Mississippi. Wouldn't all the Cascades snowmelt (and a portion of the Northern Rockies) go to the Columbia River and the Pacific Ocean??
