RE: Is this type of plug OK with an Atwood water heater?

That style of drain plug is used on the transom of boats. I doubt if that would be a good choice for a water heater.

RE: Beware GMAC Insurance

Insurance is state regulated both for rates and coverages, etc. So the experience of someone in another state may or may not be similar to your state. In one state the insurance company may have a rate increase but in another state the company may keep the rates the same. Or even have a rate decrease.

RE: When Will Good Sam Insurance Be Avaialbe in MA?

Mass has had a reputation for decades as being a difficult insurance market. Over the years some insurance companies find it easier to simply not try to do business in that state. Perhaps you should be asking the politicians in Mass since they determine the insurance laws that cause insurance companies to not want to write policies in your state.

RE: Fuel Price Gouging

Lccally today Shell 87 is $3.39 and 93 V-power is $3.71 and diesel $3.79 yet a few blocks over BP is $.30 more for gas and $.40 more for diesel. There is always a large spread but they still have business. In Silverthorne, Colorado the Shell station is always at least $.40 per gallon than the other stations that are no farther than one mile apart. Sometimes they are $.50 per gallon higher. There is a Conoco station across the street from the Shell station. If you are exiting from westbound I-70 you can see the signs and prices for both stations. Yet a lot of people pull into the Shell station. The locals don't shop at the Shell station, only the tourists.

RE: Camper started 7,600 acre Colorado fire

Unfortunately, as is the custom on many internet forums, people start calling someone an idiot without knowing the full story. In an update on the story tonight it was mentioned that the stove was a small back packing style stove. They reported that the fire was started by accident. He tried to put out the fire but it spread to quickly. So he then left the area to report the fire as quickly as possible. He contacted the sheriff's department and reported that he is responsible.

Camper started 7,600 acre Colorado fire

I was thinking in what forum should I post this information. Boondocking, tent camping, etc. But I am putting it in General RV since the information could apply to many types of camping. The 7,600 plus acre Hewlett Fire is burning north west of Fort Collins, Colorado today and is still not under control. It was announced this afternoon that a 56 year old Fort Collins man has admitted to accidently starting the fire. The source of the fire was a alcohol-fuled camping stove. If this is an accurate description of the stove it may be a small backpacking style stove. He tried to stop the fire by was not successful. There is no cell phone service in that area (very common in the Colorado mountains). By the time he could get to cell service the fire had taken off. They said he could be ticketed for "causing timber to burn without a permit" $325 in fines and fees. But the big money item is that he could be subject to civil restution. The estimated cost of fighting the fire so far is $1,200,000. There are 500 firefighters on scene along with 3 helicopters and one air tanker. In many of the forums people post about wanting to cook outside, having a campfire, etc. A new feature of many travel trailers is the outside kitchen. Any of these could cause a fire to accidently start. As dry as this year has started the exposure to a forest fire is major.

RE: Classic/antique coverage?

If I read your numbers correctly the maximum value of a total loss on the truck would be $3500. Just purchase only liability coverage and then just self insure the comp and collision coverage. Even with a low deductible ($100) you exposure is only $3400. Put the savings in premiums aside in the bank as a cushion in the event of a loss. Self insurance is a viable concept since liability insurance is the only required insurance.

RE: Guanella Pass Re-Opening...!

If you have a 4 x 4 you can go to the old Waldorf mine area. To get to Waldorf you drive about 6 miles on the old Argentine Central railroad bed. Then continue on the rail bed to the top of McCellan Mounatain. Do a Google search on the Argentine Central Railroad. Great mountain bike ride, too, except for the lack of oxygen near the top of McClellan Mountain. Railroad grades aren't too steep for this old body to handle. As far as Guanella Pass is concerned, far and away the best time to take it is the last week or two of September, when the aspen are changing. One of the better viewing localities near Denver.

RE: Guanella Pass Re-Opening...!

I have already been over Guanella Pass a week and a half ago. There has been a lot of work done on the pass. New paving, new guardrails, etc. But as far as a RV travel route there are some drawbacks. As mentioned it would not be the best for large RVs. There are a lot of switch backs with some steep grades at the switch backs. The road is paved from Georgetown to the top of the pass and down the south side to the location of the old Geneva Basin Ski Area. But from there to Grant on US285 is a mix of old poor condition pavement and gravel road. The first 5 miles heading north from Grant is all gravel with a lot of washboard. There are a few Forest Service campgrounds on the pass but they are old and very small. Dry camping with pit toilets. It is a very scenic route. At the top of the pass coming from the north the view of the two 14,000 ft peaks, Bierstadt and Mount Evans and the Sawtooth connecting them is spectacular. A good parking lot on the east side and a large overflow lot on the west side. If you have a 4 x 4 you can go to the old Waldorf mine area. Also in that area is the old Argentine Pass Toll Road to the Continental Divide at 13,200 ft. To get to Waldorf you drive about 6 miles on the old Argentine Central railroad bed. Then continue on the rail bed to the top of McCellan Mounatain. Do a Google search on the Argentine Central Railroad. Actually the pass was reopened by the end of September of 2011. Then the top part had the usual winter closure.

RE: Colorado Passes/Roads open early

With the low snowpack, are we going to regret coming out to Colorado later in the season - late July & early August? It depends on what you want to do. The wildflowers in the mountains will probably peak earlier this year. The whitewater season may be weak or even over by then although one report said it may not be real bad in that the heavy, dangerous runoff will not be there. It you like to hike the mountains will still be there just less snowfields. The 53 14,000 foot mountain peaks will still be there to climb. The 4 x 4 roads and trails will be clear of snow and all should be open. Last year with the record snows some places were still blocked at the end of July. The unknown will will be any wildfires. Greater potential with the low snow pack. The summer monsoon season is usually at the end of July into August so that may or may not produce the daily rain showers. So far in May we have had two cold and rainy days about one week apart. Some mountain areas even got some new snow.

RE: Colorado Passes/Roads open early

Due to the low snow pack this year several Colorado Passes/Roads have opened earlier than their usual opening dates. Cottonwood Pass west of Buena Vista Guanella Pass between Georgetown - I-70 and Grant on US 285 Just so everyone is aware The western side of Cottonwood is a dirt road and Guanella Pass is a dirt road. both are passable in a regular car, but people always get up there and don't realize it. Only the south part of Guenella Pass is still a dirt road. Everything from Georgetown over the top of the pass and south to the old Geneva Basin Ski area is now paved and most of it is only one or two years old. From Grant on US 285 the first 5 miles is still a dirt road. Then it becomes a mix of old pavement and dirt sections up to the old ski area.

RE: Good ol Camping World!

Tires Plus or Discount Tires, you can't go wrong with them. I would disagree with that statement about Discount Tires. I had problems at two different Discount Tire stores. My son had problems at a third Discount location. Discount Tire is not on my list anymore.

RE: Driving Question

While many people think that you moving over when you are the vehicle in the lane the reality is that the merging vehicle should be adjusting to you. If you do something other than holding your "course and speed" and there is an accident then you may be at fault. Unfortunately, about half of the drivers on the road are clueless about how to properly marge. They think that you should get out of their way because they are merging.

RE: no dc power when camping

When you say you checked the breakers did you physically flip the breakers or did you just look at their position? Sometimes a breaker will trip but still look like it is in the normal position. Flip each breaker two or three times to verify. As someone mentioned check to see if you actually have current going into the breakers.

RE: MVUM can be deceiving

I have several of the MVUM maps, including ones from the Forest Service offices in Dillon, Leadville, Fairplay, Clear Creek, etc. I agree they are hard to follow. It seem that regular maps are needed. But something I have discovered over many years is that the Trails Illustrated/National Geographic maps are usually outdated. In Summit County there are places that have had major changes 20 years ago and their maps show nothing. I have some Trails Illustrated from the 1980s/early 1990s they show the information the same as the new maps. The only difference is that the new maps are in color. The Latitude 40 brand of maps are much better than the Trails Illustrated. The only problems is that they do not have as many areas covered. I have made a direct side by side comparison of Summit County maps between the Latitude 40 map and the Trails Illustrated/National Geographic map. Major changes from 20 years ago don't even show on the Trails Illustrated map. The Latitude 40 map has changes that were less than two years old. I have also looked at the National Geographic map program that you can buy for your computer. It is just as bad as it's paper map.

RE: Sure miss my Motor Home Wife sold it?????

Your collection sounds like my neighbor. Five 34 Fords, 33 Ford, two 27 Model Ts, two AMC Gremlins (one is his daily driver), two 29 Model As. And some others being restored that I can't remember. His wife is fine with these. But if he had to choose between his wife selling any of his cars the wife would be gone, or sold.

RE: STREET VIEW ON GOOGLE MAPS

I have a question about Google Maps. How often do they update their views? I just looked a location and the aerial view is at least 6 months outdated. Then I looked at the street view and the picture is outdated by over 4 years.
