RE: Sea eagle boats

We have two Sea Eagle 385 Fast Tracks. We love them. We went from hard sit on top kayaks to these. I was skeptical of inflatables until we found them. They are great. They track well, are comfortable and are easy to inflate. Ours are a little more difficult to deflate and dry because the 385's have an inflatable floor that needs to be dry underneath before storing. Check out my blog if you want more info...just do a search on Sea Eagle. Rv Travels with Karen and Al Great website! I have to agree; we have a SOAR 16 INFLATABLE CANOE that like the Sea Eagle rolls/folds into a compact package that fits in the back seat area of our crew cab or on our hitch haul either in the front of the truck or in the back receiver under the camper. When pulling our trailer with 4-wheelers we put it on the trailer between the wheelers. Its perfect for truck camping! Chuck http://www.clearysummit.com/webimages3/P6140010.JPG

RE: Two generator questions

Well just purchased a curt c31023 front receiver hitch for my 2011 chevy 3500 D/A for $111.00 delivered at no charge. Looks like it is a piece of cake to install. As you can see I am now totally convinced!!!! As SoCal says I got the genny and the Cargo Carrier why make something simple hard and expensive! Thanks all! Hi Dave, Here's what ours looks like. We have a Bodiak front receiver. Chuck http://clearysummit.com/webimages2/DSCN1958.JPG http://clearysummit.com/webimages2/DSCN1960.JPG

RE: Two generator questions

Hey Dave, I have to agree with the other posts. We carry it in the back seat area of our crew cab. I don't fill it all the way and keep the vent closed when its in the truck. I do tie it down so it can't fly around if in an accident. Chuck

RE: Oldie TCs

These pictures were taken in 86. The truck was an 84, I don't know what year or make the camper was. I know it was pretty well worn out when we bought it. Anybody know what make it was. Chuck http://clearysummit.com/webimages/Old_Camper_Bright.jpg

RE: Question for the battery experts?

Hi Dave, Yes, I see problems. Those connectors are undoubtedly too small a gauge to carry the charging and dis-charging current to and from the battery. Look at the cables on the battery in the camper and the cables between the batteries should be a least that heavy a gauge with connectors to match. Probably 8 or 6. Next the battery you add should be a match to the one in the camper. Ideally they should have been purchased together as a matched set. Also ideally they should be setting right next to each other keeping the cables tying them together as short as possible. I'm not real good at explaining the why of all this so I suggest get the book MANAGING 12 VOLTS or go to THE 12 VOLT SIDE OF LIFE. They are both good sources, Chuck

RE: Crew Cabs are apparently not for carrying Truck Campers

Here's the camper certification and door sticker on our 2006 F-350 V10, dually, crew cab 4X4. Ford advertised this rig as having a "Payload" of 5,300 pounds. We can also subtract for every thing I have added to the truck: Superhitch, 32" extension, tie downs, front receiver, and so on. Our camper weighs around 5 grand ready to roll. RE: Has anyone removed the back seat from their Crew Cab?

Make sure you secure those heavy objects. The Honda will smell of gas.. I've been carrying the Honda back there and haven't noticed any gas smell. I don't fill it completely full and I close the air vent. I fold up the single seat and buckle the generator in its place with the seat belt. Chuck

Has anyone removed the back seat from their Crew Cab?

I just did. I've been thinking about this for some time. There's only two of us and we almost never have anyone but us in the rig. We're getting ready for an extended trip and need the extra space. Turns out it is surprisingly easy. Three bolts that screw into nuts that are attached to the underside of the floor. Three nuts that screw on to bolts attached to the floor. Took less than 5 minutes. The most time consuming part was finding an 18mm socket. Has anyone done this and come up with cabnets for storing stuff there? Two things that are going back there is our extra spare tire and our Honda 2000. Chuck

RE: North to Alaska

Reading all the great ideas has my head spinning with delight. Thank you, one and all! After I take it all in, I will have more questions, I'm sure. One occurs immediately. Any comment on the Haines Highway? Several folks have suggested Skagway to Dawson route - and it looked interesting too. We are really looking forward to this trip. While the drive from Haines to Haines Junction on the Haines Highway is great, the South Klondike Highway, Skagway through the White Pass to the Alaska Highway just east of Whitehorse is a must. What's more, you can do it two ways. While in Skagway get on the WHITE PASS AND YUKON ROUTE RAILROAD and take one of their steam or diesel train tours through the White Pass and back and then drive it. The South Klondike Highway goes through the White Pass on it's west side and the railroad on its east side. The train ride is spectacular. The railroad replaced the CHILKOOT TRAIL as the gold rush route of 1898 to the Klondike. You can drive out to Dyea, the Chilkoot Trail trail head and hike a little of the Trail. We have hiked the trail to Bennett Lake twice. Once you hit the Alaska Highway and Whitehorse you can then continue on to Alaska via the Highway or just past Whitehorse take the Klondike Loop to Dawson City picking up the Top of the World Highway with a ferry ride across the Yukon River. You'll drive into Alaska and connect with the Taylor Highway that will take you back to the Alaska Highway 12 miles east of Tok, Alaska. If you'll be returning home in mid to late August you might consider taking the Klondike Loop then as the fall colors are just great on the Top of the World Highway. Anyway, I vote for a couple of days in Haines, see all the eagles and then the ferry to Skagway. Chuck

RE: North to Alaska

If you find yourself around Fairbanks with a little extra time. A trip up to the Chena Hot Springs is worthwhile. We were there late in August a few years ago and saw the Northern Lights for the first time. WOW! Soaking in that warm water will keep you warm all night. Being in a valley surrounded by mountains makes the night sky something else. Have a great trip you will remember it. CHENA HOT SPRINGS RESORT They have a RV Campground as well.

RE: North to Alaska

If you are into fishing much, we found a GREAT place to catch Kings and Reds. We happened upon it on our trip. It is in a very small town called Copper Center. The fish camp is on the Valdez (kind of south) side of the Klutina River in Copper Center. It is nothing to look at but the people there are really great. The can take you on the Copper River to catch your Kings and then you can fish right at the fish camp for Reds. This avoids all the "combat" fishing in the Kenai. We caught our Kings there and then caught plenty of Reds. We then took a few days and drove down to Valdez where we caught a "bunch" of Pinks over at near the hatchery. This was really fun. No bait, just treble hooks. We then smoked the pinks (the only way to eat pinks according to the natives!). If you want more info, let me know. Also know of a GREAT place to view bears up close and personal on the Russian River. Harold Right on Harold, Its THE KING FOR A DAY CAMPGROUND We've stayed there and highly recommend it. Chuck

RE: North to Alaska

Hey 5percent, Get THE MILEPOST if you haven't already, it is a must! The 8Th of May we are getting on the ferry in Haines and will get off on the 26Th in Prince Rupert, BC. We will spend 2 or 3 days in each of the major towns in South East Alaska. Juneau, (our capital), Sitka (the original capital), Petersburg, Wrangell and Ketchikan. From Prince Rupert we will work our way up the Cassiar and Alaska Highways back to our home here in Fairbanks. I think we have driven just about everywhere up here that you can without taking a ferry. Check OUR WEBSITE to see some of our travels. Feel welcome to PM me with any questions. After you see Haines you might want to drive back onto the ferry and go to Skagway. I think it takes about 2 hours. Skagway was the start of the Klondike gold rush of 98 and I think is the only gold rush town in Alaska that hasn't burned down at least once. A very interesting and colorful place. From there take the Klondike Highway to the Alaska Highway and Whitehorse (the capital of the Yukon Territory) From Whitehorse you can either continue on up the Alaska Highway or take the Klondike Highway to Dawson City, the home of the Klondike gold rush and then the Top of the World Highway to Alaska and the Taylor Highway that will take you south to the Alaska Highway just 12 miles East of Tok, Alaska. I hope you have a great visit to our state, Chuck As Joe asked, what are your interests?

RE: Fresh water question

Hmmm, never thought about this before. We keep our camper in our heated garage so we never winterize. We dump (our own septic system) and refill when ever we return from a trip so our FW tank is always full and ready to roll. We took our first trip two days ago with a tank that was filled last fall from our 416 foot deep well here on our hill top. Other than filtering and softening we don't treat it. It is our drinking water as well. Chuck

RE: To those pulling trailers behind thier TCs

Hi Steve, As you can see it is an open trailer. The cargo area is 8X16 feet. Overall length is 20 feet. We haul snowmobiles and 4-wheelers. It has electric brakes on all 4 wheels and 115 gallon gas tank built into it between the frame. The truck has a SuperHitch with a 32 inch extension. With just the camper our V-10 gets around 9.5 mpg, with the trailer loaded with sleds or 4-wheelers around 8.5. We're pretty happy with it as it is. Hey Disco, As mentioned, "The 12 Volt Side of Life" is good. Also MANAGING 12 VOLTS is a very good book. I keep one in the camper. Chuck

RE: Charger/converter upgrade?

We have the PD9260 in our rig and our Honda EU2000i handles it fine. I have seen it putting out 58 amps early in the re-charge. The Honda won't handle much of anything else at that point. Chuck Hi Bill, Lots of good buys on EBAY That's where we got ours. Chuck An afterthought, make sure you use a wire size that will handle whatever amperage you decide on. I bought a high quality, arctic grade set of jumper cables, wire size #4 and used that wire between the converter and the batteries. Chuck

RE: New Truck

Hi, Welcome to the forum. Without being raised our camper hits the clearance lights on the top of our 2006 Ford F350 dually truck cab when we hit bumps. We use SPOTT'S SYSTEM for raising and centering the camper. It works very well. Our last three trucks have been Fords and we have been very happy with them. Chuck
