RE: Problem with Pilot/Flying J RV Plus Card

My experience with the card - good and bad.
Used new card traveling from St George UT to Gran Haven MI 3 weeks ago. Filled up 4 times no problem saving .04/gal. Filled propane in ILL and noticed price was .40/gal higher than posted on internet for location. Clerk refunded difference.
Received email statement giving 15 days to pay. Can only pay by checking act draft. Had problem with password and discovered the only way to access act is by phone, no email. Finally was able to set up direct draft from checking ($2500 limit). Accessed account on line to find acct balance to be 3 times3 times statement amount. $2300 vs $720 actually owed. Called in a panic Friday evening and was told don't worry, call back on Monday when credit dept is open!?
I have lost confidence in card as there is no way to fight an over charge. Too scary! I will cancel Monday after I get the account straightened out.

RE: Hartford (AARP) insurance

We have been with Progressive for several years with no claims whatsoever. We just received a bill which increases our cost by about $130/year. Received a quote from Hartford/AARP for about $500 less ($1600 vs $1100)for the same coverage. Does any one have experience with Hartford? Thanx.
Changed states last Dec (MI to TX) and researched every possible company for best pricing. Hartford was the most expensive, Blue Sky the least. Now have Blue Sky through Poliseek on MH and toad. We shall see!?
Good luck!

RE: Walmart parking lot stays - need advice please

Thanks all. This is great.
Its not so much trying to save money, as opposed to flexibility in schedule.
For example, if they decide to say longer at an attraction, or see something interesting along the way, they might have to cancel the campground for the night, and stay at a Walmart someplace in between for the night instead.
So I'm gathering that 24hr super-centers in decent neighborhoods are reasonably safe. My wife and her friend are "street-smart" and have good discernment in that respect.
Wal*Mart is one of the highly controversial and personal topic's -- over the years we have found that staying in the Wal*Mart parking lot is Safe, Convenient, and for us enjoyable. We often travel after dark on travel days between locations and have found that the Wal*Mart parking lot has camera's, security, lights and space, one of the great bonus's that we have found over the years are the number of food establishments and lower priced fuel-- add that to the ease in restocking in the store is just an added bonus.
We use this web site to find ocations;
http://www.allstays.com/c/wal-mart-locations.htm
For me Wal*Mart is a great stopping spot for us when we are travelling, giving me a location without overhanging tree's large Rocks on the curves, or neighbors that we would wake up arriving late.
IMHO Wal*Mart is a great resource for the traveling RV'er -- we use it often and without issue.

RE: Does such a thing as a decent gasser exist?

I have had a Fleetwood Bounder for 3 years with the Workhorse chassis and couldn't be happier! The quality and engineering is good, handles very well and the 8.1 GM 340hp engine has plenty of power and is very quiet on the highway. Just returned to MI from southern UT via I-15/I-80 (1900 miles) and averaged close to 9mpg towing. Talk to Bounder owners and I think you find, as I did, a great deal of brand loyalty and repeat buyers. Good luck!

RE: NEED HELP

I have the computer fans that attached to the fins. I have not defrosted since I turned it on in mid January.Paul
If you don't wire these fans to your interior light switch, where else can you get 12V? How do you go outside the refer with the wire to connect to voltage not inside the unit? Thanks for any replies!
You can buy a reefer fan at Walmart for $16 in the RV dept. Runs 30 days on 4 D cells. Good luck!

RE: 2011 Thor (or Four Winds) Serrano... HELP!

Thanks for all the replies... we're doing this! We are signing the papers tomorrow. Tomorrow I will have my retirement dream RV, except now I can't retire for ten more years! Go figure.
I have another question. I talked to a hitch place today and I'm ordering a Blue Ox tow system for my Honda Fit. The guy asked how high off the ground the receiver hitch is, but I can't find that info anywhere. Can anybody with a 2011 Serrano (or any year model that's the same) tell me?
I went with Roadmaster on my Honda Fit, hitch attachment was 2" higher than blue ox. 6" drop hitch vs 8". 05 Bounder.
Good luck.

RE: Costco Batteries?

Also read the warranty carefully, with many batteries it's prorated based on "retail price" which is often double the actual selling price. So after a short period the percent you pay is the same as the purchase price even if you had no warranty.
Interstate replaced my starter battery no charge last year. Criteria was 1 year old or less. My Battery was 11.5 years old. Good luck!

RE: Honda Fit toad -- questions about battery drain

I have a new 2012 Honda Fit Sport automatic that has now been configured for towing behind my coach. It has the Blue Ox baseplate. The braking system is inertia from the Ready Brake Elite and tow bars on my coach.
I know about running the engine and pausing at each automatic gear starting a P and then to S or L, then to D, and settling at N. Turn off engine and turn key to first notch with gear in N. Leave key in ignition.
Radio and other powered things will be off. But what battery drain will I experience? Should I pull a fuse? If so, which one? Do I need a switch installed?
I know not to drive over 55 mph. And to stop every 5 hours or so and crank the car and let it run for 5 minutes or more? Go through the gears. Do any of you unhook it and drive it around too?
I've got an 8 hour trip coming up next week and want to have everything go perfectly. Don't want a dead battery.
I have towed a 2009 Fit Sport for 3 years and over 20k miles. The only time I had a battery problem (2) was when I used a Brake Buddy directly wired to the battery, towing 10-12 hours and running the engine for 5 min at 8 hours. I solved that problem by laying 5 watt solar panel on the dash plugged into the aux outlet and running the engine while I pump gas. Now I have a Brakemaster and have no worries. Read the owners manual! It's 8 hours and 65mph.

RE: Residential fridges and remote camping???

We have a residential fridge. We dry camp for extended periods (10 to 15 days at a time) We run our genny for 45 minutes in the morning at breakfast and 45 minutes at night at supper. Sometimes a little longer when the sun doesn't shine. We have a solar array. We try and coincide all our high current devices to run during these times. eg...microwave etc.
A single 240 watt solar panel will provide enough power to run the fridge....assuming it is sunny. Otherwise count on running your generator for about an hour a day to charge the batteries assuming you have a standard 100 amp charger found in most A class rigs today. All of this is assuming you have an inverter. My experience is exactly as John and Angela have said. We spent 10 days on the desert at Quartzsite and then went for an additional 2 weeks at Imperial Dam BLM area. Day temps in the mid 70's and nights around 50. We ran the generator for about 45 minutes morning and evening with about 2-3 hours of satellite TV and an hour or so of satellite Internet. We have a 21.5 cu ft KitchenAid KSRS22MWMS. We have about 65,000 miles on the rig and it just turned 4 years old. We boondock about half our time on the road and have NO intention of changing our habits. I am putting on 3 additional solar panels (we have one) to help cut down the generator run time, but I definitely don't think the current configuration is unworkable. Never EVER, EVER, EVER, again a NORCOLD.
Oh yeah, one major problem.... I have to watch the freezer temp very carefully or I can't serve the Ice Cream!!!! It's too hard.
John
I have the same hard ice cream problem with my Dometic. Go figure!

RE: Brake Master 9160

I just bought a new toad and I am looking at instlling the Road Master 9160 Toad brake. It is the one that uses the coach air brakes as the supply air for the toad braking system. Question is have any of you out there used this product? I have heard too many stories of the toad brakes cooking because the system wasn't set up right or it was activated for some reason when it wasn't neeeded on the ones that have the "box" in the front and use some signal from the MoHo to engage the brakes. This sysem uses the same air pressure on the toad that the coach uses so I am guessing there should not be any unwanted braking on the toad. I already have the air chuck on my coach so I thought this might be the best way to go. The Toad is a 2012 F-150 and the coach is a '99 CC Allure. Thanks for your help.
I have the hydraulic/air compressor version on my gas Class A Bounder and Honda Fit for 2 years. System works great! Brake pedal clamp could be a little easier to hook up. Good luck!

RE: Awning strap has disapeared.

The thing the probably caused you strap to disappear, was a wind that unfurled you awning part way, and allowed the strap to be blown into the awning tube, and then re-rolled up. This happened to us one year. I stood looking at our awning, wondering what the he++ happened to the pull strap. Two other RVers came over and informed us on what to do, and it worked. I thanked them very much. This is what RVing is about, and this website. Thanks to all who actually help others.
You got that right! What's scary is I had secured the awning for travel!

RE: Awning strap has disapeared.

Thanks guys! I got the arms to release by using both of your techniques then standing in the open door way and grabbing the fabric and pulling until the strap appeared. A passerby used the hook to grab the strap. I am going to attach something to extend the strap so this does not happen again.

Awning strap has disapeared.

Tried to put my awning out this morning and the pull strap is gone! I closed the awning a couple of days ago in front of high winds. The hook was still in the strap when it closed. How do I retrieve the strap? Thanks!
