RE: City water connection

Course your pump is normally off when connected to city water right? That's the way I do mine anyway. If so, could be the check valve, I know mine weeps a little water when only using the pump and not connected to City water, so will be replaceing the City water valve in a couple of days. RE: 260 hp diesel - can it be reprogrammed?

Have the exact same engine in my Expedition, wouldn't dream of changing it. Just completed a 1000 mile trip, got a high mileage of 12.939 MPG traveling from Cape Girardeau Mo to exit 283 Pilot (Nice with RV stations) I-57 Illinois, total of 287 miles burned 22.18 gallons. Filled it up at Sprig street station in Cape and then filled it up at exit 283 I-57. Now on another leg of the trip, terrible wind conditions we only managed 8.074 so conditions do have an effect but a lot better mileage than my old Mirada. :B So would I change it, not on your life:B:B:B Happy trails Jim

RE: Finally, Scangauge D for Diesels

Had a scan gauge in my gas fired Mirada and LOVED it! Will be getting one of these for the Diesel Pusher. My Expedition doesn't have a gauge for boost pressure or trans temp or exaust gas temp three gauges that really let you know what your engine and trans are doing. Those three gauges far exceed the cost of this device. Can't wait to get one. Happy Trails Jim

New 32" for the old 27" TV

Got tired of hauling that old 80LB tv in my 2001 Expedition. Got a good deal on the Samsung 32" at 297.00. So it was time for the project. The old tv hung down from the overhead and made a really good head knocker. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y70/chaffeekid/2001%20Fleetwood%20Expedition/FrontTV.jpg I didn't photo all the take down of the old tv, but it is really simple. If you look inside the face frame, you will see some brackets where it is screwed into the box, remove those screws. When you have removed the surround, there is a brace at the top of the tv again held in by a couple of screws, remove those. Next you will see a couple of small braces at the left and right side of the tv at the bottom. There was a hidden screw on each of these on my tv. You can locate those by using a phillips head/cross head screw driver and feeling around. Might be able to locate them with your fingers also. Remove those screws. Then remove the little blocks the screws are holding. Ok, now check in the right equipment bay where the tv is plugged into a special plug that prevents it from being on when underway, unplug that and work the plug back into the hole from the tv cabinet. When you remove the tv remember a couple of things, it is very HEAVY, weighs about 80 LBS and it will still have the cable screwed to the back. Make sure you have a pair of pliers or a small cresent wrench to remove the cable. If yhou have two people the job will be much easier. Once you have removed the TV you can see how the cabinet is attached to the overhead cabinet area. Mine had two wood screws at the top on each side and two on the bottom each side. Once these are removed the box can be removed. It is covered with ultra leather or whatever they call this stuff on each side bottom and back. I wanted to keep the same angle and projection from the top of the cabinet so I decided to cut the bottom of each side to 16 3/4 inches. This made mine even with the bottom of the rest of the cabinet area. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y70/chaffeekid/2001%20Fleetwood%20Expedition/DSC_0058.jpg If you do this you will have to make a new bottom. I used 1/2 inch plywood for the new bottom and then replaced the angle braces which were in the old box for reinforcement. I reused the foam rubber padding and the covering, took a lot of stretching and pulling to make it work but I did. I should have cut the bottom just a little under 27" to allow for the padding and the covering, so you can see from the pictures that it wrinkled a little from being a little tight. Check your measurements. I also put a brace across the top of the box, a 2 X 2. Lastly, I used 3/4" plywood recessed back 2 1/4 " from the front edge, screwed and glued to the inside of the box. I also used cleats behind the plywood face, and the plywood was screwed to those, and along the 2x2 across the top. I used a 2 1/2" hole saw and cut an access hole where the connections to the tv would be. I enlarged that slightly with a saber saw so I could get my hand behind it. I used a mount that I bought at wally world it is a Sanus and has the 200 x 200 MM mount arms that my Samsung required. I mounted that to the tv and then placed chalk around the mounting hole. Held the tv at the spot where I wanted it, moved the unit around a little and the chalk left a mark where the mount top hole should be drilled. I drilled the hole for a 1/4" bolt and installed the mount with the two 1/4" bolts and nuts and lock washers. Oh yes, I made sure that both side cabinets were still accessible when the tv is mounted. Put the Tv on the mount and pushed the little tab and locked it down. Now it looks like this. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y70/chaffeekid/2001%20Fleetwood%20Expedition/DSC_0057.jpg Happy Trails Jim

RE: Your not going to believe this!!

Well guys and gals, as to the retired CPA, those are the actual gallons used and the miles traveled, except for the tenths left off the mileage. I am a very happy camper. The I had the cruise set about 95% of the time at 58 MPH, I'm retired and in no hurry, I stay in the right lane and let the world hurry by. I'll keep you posted when we fill it up again. We will be leaving here Thursday morning heading for Davenport Ia. Will be playing my Guitar and singing in the Assembly of God Church in Davenport for Easter. The Pastor is a former Chaplin of the Chaffee VFW, when I was the Commander. From Davenport, we will head down 61 back home in about next Monday. Happy Trails Jim

Your not going to believe this!!

We left Saturday on the first long trip in our new (to us) motorhome. If you have read my other posts you'll know I have been working on several problems, got those sorted...mostly. I filled up the coach at the Rhodes 101 on Sprigg St in Cape Girardeau, Mo. We crossed the river and went through Jonesboro, Il and hit I-57 headed north to kanakee, Il. As we went along, and approached Effingham, I thought I had another problem. The gauge hadn't moved, I started to think that the fuel gauge had quit. Well to make a long story short, we fueled up again at exit 283, a new pilot (nice, with an RV area) and it took 22.18 gallons to fill it to the top, same as when we left Cape. It was 287 miles divided by 22.18 gallons is 12.939:B:B:B And here's the kicker, I was pulling my 2011 Dodge Ram 4X4 Pickup. I have a 5.9L ISB Cummins in my 2001 Fleetwood Expedition. If it keeps getting fuel mileage like this, I'll keep it forever:B:B:B This is exactly the fuel that I burned and the miles traveled. Happy Trails Jim

RE: Rest areas with "no overnight parking"

Why would you want to stay overnight in a place where it reeks of urine, trucks ideling and grumbling, trucks coming and going all night:h There are campgrounds all up and down those states very cheap ones to very expensive. A little prior planning and you can easily estimate where you will be for the night. A visit to Trailer Life Directory, of which I always carry the latest copy will show you every campsite up and down your route. You can also find them on line if that is the way you want to do it. As a prior over the road truck owner/operator I would NEVER consider parking overnight in a rest area. 1. It is not safe, I have seen several hoods ripped off trucks by rookie drivers leaving in the middle of the night. 2. Re-read the first paragraph. But, that's just me I guess, and other than a short rest stop during the day, you will NEVER see my Coach in a rest area, county, state or federal owned. Happy Trails Jim

RE: Time Delay Relay/Transfer Switch

UPDATE. Here's what the problem was, just in case anyone else runs into this problem. Remember my solution refers to an ONAN 7.5KW Quiet Diesel, don't know about any others. If you read the OP, you know the generator was making power and was verified by checking at the distribution box under the fridge. 120Volts on each leg with a digital voltmeter. This is appearently misleading, as the amperage was not enough to latch the relays. With the info supplied by Bud, and the trouble shooting guide, I checked each of the transfer relays and the time delay relay and all were good:h This then led me back to a problem I had noted eariler. If you are standing in front of the generator, on the upper left front of the unit you will see an inspection cover that is held on by two 10MM bolts. If you remove these and with a flashlight take a look you should see a terminal block with five wires on each side. What you should not see is heavy corrosion. Mine was so corroded that the screws that hold the the wires could not be released. There are two screws that hold the terminal block on the generator, I was able to get one out by using a penatrating fluid. The other one was to far gone and broke off. I cut each wire, after having made a diagram of the wire connections, and had to lengthen each of the wires from the generator by four inches. There are two Black (hot) and two White (netural) and one Green (ground). I was lucky in that I had a terminal block in my amateur radio junk box that worked perfectly. I attached ring terminals to the wires and attached them to the new terminal block. I did check e-bay and several terminal blocks are located there. Terminal Block This is one like I used, you would only need five of the connections on each side. Bottom line, after replacing the new terminal block back into the inspection area. Oh yes, the new terminal block could not be attached back to the inside top of the generator as the original was, so I wrapped it heavily with tape and placed it back under the cover. There is no chance of it moving around it is pretty tight in there and the wires are short. Now in retrospect, the new terminal block could be mounted to the cover plate itself, underside of course and then the cover plate bolted back on the genset. I fired up the generator and about 20seconds later was greeted with a loud CLICK as the Transfer Switches energized and power was back in the coach:B:B:B The old terminal block was so badly corroded that it was just scrap. Anyhoo, hope this will help someone else. If you have the 7.5KW Quiet Diesel genset, suggest that you remove that cover and take a look, you might catch it in time to do some preventive maintance and save yourself a lot of trouble. RE: Time Delay Relay/Transfer Switch

Hey Bud, I have checked the inverter, and pushed the reset button, no difference. There is no other generator power anywhere in the coach that I can find. Have checked all the GFI's and as I said, everything is fine on shore power. I have verified that there is power in the distribution box on each leg of the genset. I am waiting now for the new time delay relay to get here from Adventure RV. Thanks Jim

RE: Time Delay Relay/Transfer Switch

Budd, thanks for the wiring diagram, and the link to the trouble shooting guide also located there. This will help. I don't see any other item that could be causing me the problem. But I am still open to suggestions so if you have encountered a problem like this, or have changed the PowerTek PDC 1020 for another model I would sure like to hear about it. I have looked with a search engine for information on the PowerTek, it is no longer manufactured as no information exists that I can dig up. If anyone has a manual on it I would love to have a copy. Thanks Happy Trails Jim

RE: Tow package installation in Vancouver BC

Hi Nui, What is the vehicle you are getting base plates installed on? Here's a link to etrailer.com where I have bought all my tow equipment. I suppose you are buying a tow bar and base plates, they have them for all the popular towed vehicles. Towbars and base plates Look around this site and order your tow bar and plates and take them to any good mechanic and they should be able to put them on with the instructions that Etrailer supplies. If you check around on this site they will also show you how to do it. You will also need to install a wiring harness with diodes to run the brake lights on your toad. I did this on a jeep liberty, a ford explorer and my dodge 1500 Ram. Any mechanic worth his salt would do this for a couple of hundred dollars with you supplying the parts. Hope this helps Happy trails Jim

Time Delay Relay/Transfer Switch

Hi Everyone, well here's the spec's. First I have a 2001 Fleetwood Expedition, Diesel Pusher, 5.9L Cummins engine and a 7.5 KW QD Generator. The problem is the generator is making power on both legs, have confirmed that by removing the face plate of the PowerTek distribution center below the Fridge and measuring the voltage. 120 Volts on both legs of the circuit. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y70/chaffeekid/2001%20Fleetwood%20Expedition/Time%20Delay%20Relay%20transfer%20switch/DSC_0002.jpg This led me to believe the Transfer Switch(es) were bad, these are suspect most of the time. So... I ordered a new one and installed it. No difference, the generator is still making power, but no AC to the coach. Ok... so maybe it is the other one, removed that one and installed another one there, no difference, still no AC to the coach from the Genset. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y70/chaffeekid/2001%20Fleetwood%20Expedition/Time%20Delay%20Relay%20transfer%20switch/DSC_0012.jpg I should have mentioned that when plugged into shore power everthing is fine and it is a 30amp service. The only other thing in the distribution panel box is a time delay relay, little small thing that is bolted to the back wall. I have removed that and ordered a new one from Adventure Rv. That little thing is more than the transfer switches, 20.00. The time delay relay is 28.00. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y70/chaffeekid/2001%20Fleetwood%20Expedition/Time%20Delay%20Relay%20transfer%20switch/DSC_0015.jpg Anyone have any experience with this time delay relay and am I on the right track? The Genset runs great, starts and runs fine, just not getting power past the distribution box. It is a PowerTek PDC1020. Sorry for the long post. Happy trails Jim

RE: Diesel Toad

Had a 2001 TDI VW bug, was setup for towing when I bought it, had a manual transmission. I don't know about the newer engines but if they still have that timing belt that has to be changed at about 100,000 miles it is a bummer to change and at the same time you should change the water pump. It comes as a kit with the belt in most cases. There is a TDI forum if you use a search engine you will find it, lots of good information, what did we do before the internet:@ Happy Trails Jim

Very Bad storm damage in Branson this morning.

If you are headed to Branson, there is very bad, heavy damage in and around Branson Mo this morning, 29 Feb 2012. Several theaters are badly damaged and roofs blown off of buildings. One report I saw I believe a large Class A was laying on its side. Prayers for all those people in and around those areas. Jim
