RE: Camping and skiing - is it possible?

While we don't ski, we have camped in some colder areas. Be aware that MHs do not drive real well in the snow. YES, it can be done but most are very rear heavy and of course rear wheel drive. We got caught in a heavy snow storm and I couldn't wait to park the thing!
Yes, many people in Washington do drive up to the mountains and camp for skiing. Just not something I choose to do.
MHs are generally not well insulated. You will find cold seeping in from unexpected places, especially if there is wind. You may not be real warm and cozy inside.
Water can freeze anywhere in an RV- in pipes in the walls, at outlets to dump and even the tanks. When we winter camp we do NOT use water through the pipes but carry jugged water and plan on no showers. The only place water goes is into the black tank.
Propane will last a long time but depending on the tank size and heat needed, you will need to monitor your useage.
Be sure you check with any rental company about your intended use in snow and cold.
While a MH adventure sounds great, a nice warm ski lodge might be a better choice with lots less worrying. Enjoy whatever you decide to do and be safe!

RE: Good Sam ERS Not Happy

Well, I will always carry some type of ERS. We currently have and plan to keep Coachnet. We had a breakdown near Hyder,Alaska and needed a tow that cost $2200. My $100 or so a year is covered now for many years since all I did was sign and watch that flat bed truck haul my MH away.
Friends without ERS just paid $800 for a short tow back to get new front tires after a blow out. We have also used roadside assistance for a flat tire on the car with a lug nut I could NOT budge.
Like all insurance, it is a bet - you bet you'll need it and they bet you won't. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. I just sleep better in the RV not worried about the what ifs with a bad tire or breakdown on the road.

Solar Happiness + THANKS!!

Last year we invested in a 400 watt set of solar panels, controller and 4 new glass matt batteries with 440amps storage capacity on our MH. We spent months off the grid in Arizona last winter and are SO happy with the results.
I am NOT able to do installs myself so used AM Solar in Springfield, Oregon after much advice from Pianotuna and others here on this forum. Between the paid for excellent help at AM Solar and free advice and education here, we got an amazing system. THANKS to all who helped educate me and for assisting in getting a super system.

RE: So new.. where to begin..

Yes you CAN DO IT!!!! I am a retired woman that drives a 37' gasser Class A. Is the third RV and I LOVE it. PLEASE do your homework and do not trust what some/most salesman say - their job is to move a unit not necessarily help you make the best choice. Go to campgrounds and wander around asking people what they like and don't like about their RV. Check out www.rvingwomen.org - an organization of ALL women Rvers. Lots of good advice and support there for women who RV or who are contemplating RVing.
This RV.net forum is a SUPER place to ask questions and to get good answers.
There is NO reason that you cannot find that "perfect" RV for yourself. Look at your needs, storage capabilities and test drive several that you may like. Check out access to the essentials for dumping and hooking up. Take your time and do your homework!
Welcome to the wonderful and wacky world of RVing!!

RE: Crock Pot out of Control

I tossed out my "Smart" crockpot. Discovered that the difference between high/low/hold was very little, almosat no change in voltagebeing used. Everything was too HOT!! Got an old style, cheap, non-electronic crockpot pot with only high and low and it works as it should..............simmer for hours without burning food. Much happier cook now.

RE: Need Some Advice On Getting Started

Had friends with a Scamp which they enjoyed. Their one complaint was lack of storage space. If you go fulltime, check carefully how many things you cannot give up and figure out if there is space for those items without incurring a storage cost somewhere. Good luck with your dream.

RE: Which Roadside Assistance

Coach Net for us too. After three tows over ten years, I am VERY happy with their service. I also like that when having mechanical issues while on the road, they will call ahead and get you an appointment at a proper repair facility for your RV. Have had to do that two times.
Whatever you decide to do, read the fine print and know what coverage you get.Coachnet will tow me to the next appropriate repair facility, not just the next town with NO mileage limit. Used that in Alaska when we broke down near Hyder, Alaska and had a 300+ mile flatbed tow to Prince Rupert to get repairs. Cost to me was $0 on a $2200 tow. Figure that tow has paid for my annual fee for almost 20 years!! May I never need them again.

RE: Anyone use solar power or other alt-energy?

We added solar panels and more batteries and spent most of last winter in Quartzite. Provided power for the basics but not for AC, microwave or hair dryer. We loved our noiseless solar. Saw and heard some wind turbines down there but very few using them.
For us, using solar worked well but is not like being plugged in. With only a few small adjustments on useage, we were delighted with our system. Living in the NW and seeing a grey and cloudy spring and so far this summer, would not be working so well here. Solar works extremely well but does have some limitations. Can't wait to head back to the sunshine and use our solar house on wheels again this winter.

RE: First time MH owner and Glad to be here

Welcome to the dream. Another vote for careful maintenance checks and likely new tires before heading out. Your RV can give you many wonderful miles. Tires are THE most important safety feature. As stated, tire age, NOT wear is the indicator of replacement needs. Enjoy the adventures ahead.

RE: Verizon Hotspot, anyone?

Use the MiFi when travelling in the RV and works VERY well. I used to tether a phone but like being able to use the phone while on the internet. $60 for 5 gigs a month. Never have hit the limit but we do not not stream video - really chews through the data rapidly.

RE: Replace TV antenna with satellite dish

I installed a Winegard Trav'lr auto dish and have been delighted. I replaced a never used dish similar to what you are looking at. The reviews, a couple of years ago on what I had, were that it was not very stable in heavier winds and would lose signal. I believe they have redesigned the Dish Magic but you might look for reviews on it. For me, the extra $ to push one button and be done was worth it. Guess I am spoiled...............

Banks or new mufflers

Bad news - I have a corroded almost through hole in one muffler. Need to replace with either two new mufflers or a Banks System. Driving a Worhores chasis 37' Winnebago Voyage gasser. If you have done a Banks system, would you do it again or not and WHY?
Thanks for your thoughts on this dilema!
