RE: Red Max Pro/ ZEP

Nope. An acylic coating like ZEP or whatever is only an option for recovering a finish that has failed because it is too old, or has not been maintained properly (and they work great for that!). If you take care of the finish from the get go, you should never have to recoat it (or at least not until it qualifies as a classic). Regular applications of a good wax or polish, or a protectorant like 303 should keep things looking good for a long time. Personally, I think fabric covers are a great help, but there are mixed opions on that ....

RE: used vans in florida?

Florida is a good place to look for used RV's (and boats also, for that matter). It is an unfortunate fact of life that many retirees end up having to sell their units before they get to use them much. The dealer in Nokomis (actually closer to Osprey, Fl) is huge and specializes in A, B, and C's, and there are several others in the Tampa-Sarasota-Naples area as well as other areas in Florida ...

RE: Secret of Grilling Chicken

Cook it slow so it cooks through without flaring up, and get a decent meat thermometer so you can tell when it is done. Leg or breast quarters should take at least 45 minutes if the heat is right, boneless breasts or smaller pieces less.
Some people pre cook it in the microwave or par-boil it, then finish it off on the grill, and that can work too.

RE: Please wash your hands

Like the guy at the construction site who saw his young helper heading into the porti-poti with a straightened out wire coat hanger. He asked the kid "What do you think you're doing?"
The kid says "I took my hoodie off when I was in there, and when I went to stand up it slid down the hole."
Boss says "You have got to be kidding - you don't want that hoodie!"
The kid replies "I don't care about the hoodie, but I had a donut in the pocket ...."

RE: How long is too long? re: length of TT

We don't have kids - well, occassionaly grand-kids - but we just went from 30' and 6700 lbs to 35' and 8500 lbs. Big difference in living and storage space, and I can sit in the bathroom without opening the door. We checked the campsite listings of the places we like to go, and while are choices are slightly more limited, there are still plenty of nice ones around.
A bigger concern for me would be the TV - you are going to need a full fledged truck for a big trailer and all those people (and their friends) and gear.

RE: Industrial Receiver Hitch

You can get an adapter - try a local place that sells trailer or farm stuff - TSC, etc.

RE: Skimboards

Skim boards can be real fun for kids. There are usually plenty of ready made ones available for a reasonable price anywhere that there is a beach suitable for using them - everything from small local shops to Walmart. Get the kids a cheapy to see if they like it. If they do like it, and they get decent at it, they will tell you which one they want next. In my opinion, learning how to skim board is a young kid thing - anybody over 10 years old is too old to learn without hurting themselves. Young kids fall and get raspberries - older people break things. I used to run rescue here at the beach, and we used to have at least a dozen nasty injuries a summer - almost all were newbies in the 20-40 age bracket.

RE: Tounge Jack Install Question

The jack is probably the highest amp draw of any 12 volt item on your rig. It is important that you have wire big enough to carry the load. The longer the wire run, the bigger the wire has to be. You would have to check to see if the existing wire from the battery to the distribution panel is big enough for the added load. If your trailer has slide outs, they are probably wired separately from the distribution panel for the same reason. The most efficent installation is to hook the positive lead directly to the battery using the jack manufacturer's supplied fuse. It is only one additional ring terminal on the positive terminal - doesn't seem like a big deal to me.

RE: Electric skillet

Might want to put a half inch or so of water in the frying pan so you don't scorch either the frying pan or the cake pan ..... and don't be in a hurry .. low and slow

RE: Kid friendly activity or camping ideas 3-4 hrs around DC?

Cape May County, New Jersey ... lot's of campgrounds, none on the beach, but all are close to beaches ... historic like Cape May .. boardwalk like Wildwood ... quiet family beaches like Stone Harbor, Avalon, Sea Isle, Ocean City. Little known secrete is that Stone Harbor has RV parking adjacent to the beach - meters at 96th Street, free at 122nd Street -- you do have to have beach tags for the adults everywhere except the Wildwoods.

RE: Jack Knife Couch

How about a decent quality air mattress to lay on top? We did that with our old trailer that had a jack knife sofa, and nobody complained - have to admit I never tried to sleep there myself ...

RE: Outside kitchen question

I think the mini fridge in the outside galleys of the Outbacks only run on electric. You can check the labels on the fridge to see what the wattage is. If it is an absorption type refridgeration unit, an inverter might run it for a while, but if it is a compressor type, you are going to need a big inverter and lots of batteries. I think I would get a bunch of the "blue ice" fake ice things, freeze them in the propane freezer inside, and then use them to supplement the outside fridge which are probably going to use mostly for drinks anyhow ....

Glen Rouge Campground is on the east side of town, and is very nice. Big sites, water and electric, but no sewer.

RE: A Question about Keys & Locks on TT's

It is my understanding that the coming from the factory, almost all the "top" locks can be opened with one of a few master keys used by dealers. The lower dead bolt is keyed uniquely and the master keys can't open those. If someone gets a hold of master keys - and I bet there are lots of sets hanging around - they can get right into your RV unless you have the dead bolt locked. If you have your unit re-keyed, you need to find out whether or not the cylinders being installed are master keyed or not. You can get unique keys, but if you take it in for service, you will have to leave your keys if the dealer needs to get in ....
As said above, most of the compartment locks are all keyed alike, but you can change them too if you like ...

New to us 2012 Outback 277RL - Just picked it up yesterday, and spent most of today moving all the stuff into it. Tomorrow it gets a nice coat of wax, and we head down to Hatteras the weekend after Memorial Day.

RE: Covering your Power Tongue Jack

We use the upside down kitty litter bucket also. Just hook the safety chains as well as the emergency brake layard on the upturned bucket handle. When traveling, the bucket holds the wheel chocks and the pieces of wood we use under the jack.

RE: Tell Me about RV Covers

As said above, there are many threads on here about covers - some love them, some don't. We started with a cheapie generic one, but then invested in a custom one from CalMark. We love the way it keeps the trailer clean and dry so it is ready to go when uncovered. We just traded for a new trailer, and will be ordering a new cover from CalMark as soon as we take delivery.

RE: Help please with floor

I would stop the leak for sure. Hit any mildewed parts with bleach, then dry out the wet parts with a portable heater or a heat lamp, then saturate the area with "Git-Rot" or other similar epoxy product to make sure it doesn't start getting funky ....

RE: Tire Opinion

There are not many options in the 14" size. If you check out the forums for the smaller single axle trailers (Casita, etc.) that exclusively use 14" tires, the consensus seems to be to go to a load range D tire. That leaves two options - the above mentioned Kumho, or the Kenda Karrier distributed by Martin Wheel and sold by Northern Tool and others ...Maaxis is the highest respected brand out there, but as far as I can tell they do not make a 205/14 in Load Range D

RE: CAMPGROUNDS WITH SEASONAL SITES

Here at the Jersey Cape Shore there are dozens of campgrounds and nearly all of them cater to seasonal sites - some are condo lots, some are leased. Nearly all are zoning restricted and have to be closed from late fall to spring. A few are even required to have all trailers removed in the winter. A few are totally park models with screen rooms, storage sheds, etc. Some are pretty old and sleazy, and some are top shelf all the way. Most of them are family resort oriented with a significant percentage of transient sites, and are complete with pools, arcades, kids activities and everything else. Some place everybody I guess!
