RE: Looking for new tires

Thank you everyone for your recommendations! We will be taking them into consideration tomorrow as we start our shopping. It is very helpful getting other opinions as we had no idea where to even start! Thanks again!

Looking for new tires

We are in the market for new tires on our 2003 GMC Sierra 2500HD Diesel. We tow a 8800lb fifth wheel. Any pointers? Good brands? What ratings are minimum? Have never had to buy truck tires before and not sure what to look for. Thanks!

Cleaning front cap

What is the easiest way to clean the front cap? I have tried leaning a extendable ladder against it but am afraid of damaging it since I can see if "give" a bit. Is there any other way to get good access to scrub the bugs and wax without damaging? I have tried to just reach with a long handle scrub brush but I don't get enough leverage for a good scrub.

RE: trailer door

I have not had this problem, but have noticed it on other trailers in the campground. I noticed it right away and thought to myself, "I would not like the door like that". With small kids it is an accident waiting to happen (bumping heads on the bottom, etc). Just my .02

RE: Full-timing in MI during winter

Wow! Thank you for opening my eyes! I had no idea. If I do decide to go through with the lifestyle change I will need to find another avenue, or move to a warmer state :) Thanks again!

RE: Your Rig

Hi folks,
We finally took the plunge and sold our 02 Wildcat and bought a 2008 Crossroads Cruiser 32BL. I've wanted this model for quite awhile and found a good deal.
I sure hope these pics work..
Here it is the day I picked it up:
http://i1116.photobucket.com/albums/k576/gocamp100/53321939_photobucket_98866_.jpg width=640
And then just recently after I added Firestone Ride-Rites to my truck and 16" wheels and tires (which I had added but then taken off the Wildcat) replacing the 15" on the Cruiser. Not aluminum, but I don't care... happy to have the camper riding on Michelin instead of whatever the old stuff was.
Love the floorplan! I have been waiting for someone to come out with a bunkhouse model with the picture window in the rear!
Truck is a 2000 F250 7.3 PSD, not the fastest truck out there but still goin...

Full-timing in MI during winter

I am thinking of splitting with my spouse. I am weighing my options on where I am going to live. Financially it may be my best option to full-time in my fifth wheel. There is a RV Resort in a nearby town (15 miles from my home) which people do stay all winter in park trailers (not sure about fifth wheels). What do I need to know? How much propane will I use to heat during winter? Can I use an electric heater? I have a 2010 Jayco Eagle Superlite Fifth Wheel which does have an enclosed underbelly with insulation. I do not think it is considered a "polar package" though. Any insight will be very helpful.

RE: 5th wheel or travel trailer NEED HELP???

We started out with a pop-up, then tt, now fiver. If I could do it over again I would have started out with a fiver. Hindsight is 20/20! But then again, life changes and it is hard to predict. But I agree on the hits from upgrading. Wish I could have avoided that all together! I love the extra storage in the fiver. Ours has tons more cabinets inside and the basement storage is awesome. I also love the high ceilings. Feels more like a home than our tt ever did. Hitching up is sooo much easier! One person can do it easily. Just look in the mirror and back into the hitch until it catches. No bars or sway bars to deal with. An added bonus with towing is virtually no sway! Even with a sway bar we still had sway when a big truck went by or on a windy day. Our Jayco Eagle weighs 8400lbs dry and we started out with a 2007 Chev Silverado 2500 HD same ratios as you have. Towed good, just sucked the gas. We got rid of that and got a 2003 GMC Sierra 2500 HD diesel and tows better. Good luck with your search. You can find some great bunk floor plans with the Chapparral and Sundance that weight around 7700 lbs. We almost got one of those before we found our Jayco. It was a demo model and got a great deal. Keep us posted on your purchase!

Cleaning inside hitch

I just bought some white lithium spray to lube our Reese fifth wheel hitch. What is the best method for cleaning the inner parts of the hitch? Blow air from compressor or hose?

RE: Refrigerator Issues

This has happened to me a few times and I found that the problem was air in the gas line or tank was not fully turned on. Make sure your propane tank is turned on and has propane in it. Try lighting again. If it does not light, you may have air in your line. Light stove to move some air out of line and try again. At the beginning of the season it takes me 3-4 tries lighting the fridge before it ignites. Good luck!

RE: Wiring in the truck bed.

Have the bumper plug but are looking into a bed plug. The reason is this: On our last trip the extra wire (still plugged in) came out of the bed and dragged across the pavement when driving 65 MPH. We did not notice until we tried to brake and the brakes kept chucking us back and forth. We pulled over and found our wire had wore through the rubber, and a few of the wires. One of them must have been the brake wire to one side of the trailer. We stopped by a farm and a very kind man supplied us with wire cutters and electrical tape and within 30 mins we were on our way. This could have turned out a lot worse if we needed to stop in a hurry! If you can swing the $40 or so bucks to have one installed, I would recommend a bed plug. No chance of the wire dragging on the ground.

RE: Running out of hot water fast?

When I shower I get wet and shut off. Lather up hair and one leg and shave leg. Turn on water, rinse hair, leg and razor, shut off water. Put conditioner on hair, lather other leg and shave. Turn water back on and rinse hair, leg, and razor. Shut off water. Lather up body with body wash/soap, turn water back on and rinse. Done. Probably only used 5 gals or less of water. I never use the hot all the way on. I would check your shut off valves. I had the issue with washing dishes on our first trip after storage. The water was very warm, but never got really hot. Apparently I forgot to re-open one of the valves from the water heater to the main water line. I would check that first. I have three valves so it was a trial and error to find which one. If that does not help you may need to replace the anode.

RE: homemade bunkbed ladder

Very Nice job! How much did you spend on materials? I just ordered an aluminum one from our local dealer and spend $60. Lightweight, but my guess is that it won't last nearly as long as yours. Beautiful wood work.

RE: Just bought our first fiver!!! 2007 Jayco 30.5BHS

Congrats on the new rig! We purchased our 2nd Jayco in January, our first fifth wheel. We got a new 2010 Jayco Eagle Super Lite 28.5 BHS and LOVE it! We will have this rig for a long time. It fits our needs perfectly. Enjoy and happy camping!

RE: awning lights

There was a thread several months ago where someone used a stick on LED light strip attached to the awning tube. The power cable was run down a support arm but did need to be disconnected to roll up/down the awning. This could be done before raising the awning if I recall correctly. Looked like a very slick setup and everything stayed in place all the time. Sorry cant find the thread quickly.
I did see those stick on LED lights on Ebay. They are very cool. They come with a remote and you can change the color and even make them chasing, etc. They are expensive though. $100 bucks!
