RE: Wy. Big Horn Mts. boondock and dry camping

FYI - hazard tree removal over past couple of years has opened a lot of campsite to sun so you shouldn't have too much trouble finding a site with ample sun. In fact, I've been recommending folks camping in the Rocky Mountain region bring some of their own shade. Just give the ranger district office a call to learn if the campground you want to enjoy has been hit by mountain pine beetle and lost its canopy. You'll find their phone number off the "Forest Contacts" tab at the top of the forest's web page at www.forestcamping.com.

RE: Bridgeport area

I second Hays St. Cafe - their cinnamon rolls could feed a small family and their hot oatmeal was good enough for the cowboys sitting next to us to order. Downside was the price of gasoline - ouch! Isn't there a hot springs nearby, too?

RE: Water in Vernal, Utah

Give the Ashley National Forest's Vernal Ranger District office a call at 435-789-1181. They should be able to direct you to water.

RE: Strawberry Res over Memorial Day

Two days ago I was running around in a tank top and shorts in SE Arizona. Tonight, had to dig out boots and snow shovel. It has been a weird winter. What the weather will be like end of May requires a good quality crystal bowl, I would say LOL.

RE: Douglas, AZ

I think the Douglas Golf Course (northeast side of Douglas) has a campground and there is one a private cg, Twin Butte I think its called, along Rt 80 between Douglas and Bisbee. There is a Supercenter Walmart in town but have never seen anyone camped there.

RE: Place near Devils Postpile

Probably to late but I would suggest contacting the ski resort about a campsite. Some allow BD in their parking lots but call ahead about conditions around Devils Postpile. I heard there were some serious problems but that was a few weeks ago.

RE: yosemite, merced, madera boondocking?

Excuse me but what about the campgrounds in the Sierra and Stanislaus national forests? Stanislaus's Diamond "O" campground would be my first choice ($21 fee last year) and Sierra's Summerdale cg (also $21) another top pick but there must be a half dozen or more that would do. And, of course, you could also dispersed camp in the forest. Just a thought.

RE: Demotte camping north end grand canyon

Checked forestcamping.com and *average* is 53 ft in length. De Motte was renovated several years ago so aprons are much longer. Recommend a trip to Dog Point viewpoint. Marble Canyon viewpoint also spectacular. Check with forest about riding within campground. Enjoy.

Are Roller Blinds a good thing?

A visit to our motorhome the other day reminded me, we have two day/night shades that need to be re-strung before we hit the road. In seven years, we have had to re-string at least two shades each year. I've gotten pretty good at re-stringing but the installation is a pain. We are ready for some other design. Would love to replace our current shades with new-style MCD's American Duo Day/Night shade System but not in the budget. Does anyone have experience with those good old-fashion roller blinds? Would they be a good alternative? Thanks for your insight.

RE: Montana RV Destination Help...please

Okay, the possibilities are numerous. I would first suggest you consider Baker's Hole cg (Gallatin NF) over Grizzly RV Park. Campsites are within a stone's throw of river (great fishing) and you can see Yellowstone NP across the water. Big sites and hookups. Take a look at www.forestcamping.com for details. Are you going through Cody, WY? If memory serves there is a rodeo each weekend and the Wild Bill Cody museum is a hoot. Wapiti cg and Rex Hale cg (Shoshone NF) have partial hookups and the Shoshone River. However, Falls cg (also Shoshone NF) has only electric hookups and will always be dear to me - my dog met a yearling moose there. I'm not sure which critter was more surprised. If you have time while in the Yellowstone NP area consider a visit to Earthquake Lake and Wade Lake. The first is an amazing example of the earth's power and the late is one of the prettiest alpine lakes you will find around there. If in Bozeman, MT consider visiting Museum of the Rockies - very kid-friendly.

RE: Camping 1st time with 1yo and 3 other kids

Suitcases!!! LOL!!! I've been know to use a pillowcase. Whatever works for you. BTW, you can cut down on your work by making bedrolls for the boys and not making up a bed. Just spread a blanket on the floor and a clean sheet on top. Fold it (in half or thirds) so it best fits the child and roll it up. Stuff it in a cabinet until needed. Lay the bedroll out and fold the end under so it is snuggle. And don't forget their pillows. (We have forgotten pillows so many times, I just keep a set in our RV stored in one of those air tight vacuum sealed "space bags.")
Unless I know the water is bad, we don't take bottled watered. State law requires campground, whether private or public, water be tested regularly so that's not a worry. I do use a Britta water filter per my hubby request for his tea/coffee. We generally travel with may 6 to 10 gallons in our fresh water tank and top it off when we get to the cg. If your TT is new, you shouldn't have to worry about TT water's safety. I cook and wash with our fresh water tank and keep our Britta pitcher of water on the counter for drinking.
Check out Pinterest camping crafts for more ideas. One idea I liked and children enjoyed used a cheap cloth drop-cloth and rolls of electric tape. They made a hop-scotch grid one day, bean bag toss game another day, and a roadmap (with boulders, trees, and lake) the next day. The tape went on easy and was even easier to get off.
One last thing, the odds are good you'll over pack. My advice is to make a list (I know its labor intensive but so useful) of what you take and when you get home, go over that list and see what you really didn't use, need, or want.
Oh and don't forget your camera!!! This could be the start of many more adventures.

RE: Camping in Western USA -> Tent

Here are some more suggestions:
Near Las Vegas, NV - Toiyabe NF's Spring Mountain National Recreation Area, any one of their campgrounds but Dolomite is a personal favorite
Between Yellowstone and Teton NP - Targhee NF's Cave Falls cg - best drinking water around and at an undiscovered entry to the Park
Grand Canyon's North Rim - Kaibab's De Motte Park cg - the wildlife viewing is super and convenient to the Park however we spent most of our time exploring the area and visiting places like Dog Point and Marble Canyon viewpoint
Yosemite NP - Tioga Lake cg in the Inyo NF - Some of the best views of the park are from this little campground
Near Bryce NP - Red Canyon cg in the Dixie NF (really high marks for hiking and history - this was Butch Cassidy's old neighborhood)
Note all are in national forests so the crowds won't be as huge a problem.
Happy camping

RE: Camping 1st time with 1yo and 3 other kids

Food wise - just remember K.I.S.S. = keep it simple sister! Take what they will eat and don't worry about it.
For the old boys, have them make "Spiders" for dinner. "Spiders" are hot dogs that have had the ends cut through two to four times for about an inch then put on a green stick or long handle fork and roasted over the campfire. As the hot dog cooks, the "legs" of the "spider" curl up giving it that creature look.
Other tips:
- leave all the sweet smelling baby products at home. The sweet smell tends to attract bugs
- stick with your normal schedule as much as possible
- naps are critical to insure a happy littlest camper
- give a backpack to each child to pack (and that includes the 1 yr) their must have things. One backpack per child only!
Last summer we camped with 2 year old twin girls and a 8 year old boy. Frankly, the 2 year old were easier on so many levels.
And, before you head out, ask the older children to inspect the TT for any potential problems the young one might discover, such as dangling wires and sharp corners. Be sure to correct, tie-up the wires and cover corners with piece of the pool noodles or whatever those floating things are called, before hand.

manual external water pump

Hubby going in for *another* hernia repair. I think part of reason for this problem is the challenge of filling the fresh water tank on our mh. We do a lot of dry camping and my solution to carrying the water to the mh and then having to lift the *@^% thing to shoulder height and pouring the water in is a manual (maybe a foot style) pump. Does anyone have in suggestions or recommendations? Thanks.

If memory serves me, its the grade on the roads heading west out of Yosemite - something like 25%. Remember to use your transmission and its lower gears rather than brakes to slow yourself down.

RE: passing through bismark

If you are going by Medora, ND, check out Buffalo Gap campground in the Little Missouri National Grassland. Easy on/easy off, flush toilets, hot showers, and more. The fee was $6/night and it is one of the sweetest campgrounds we found along I-94 (including private ones). Give it high marks.
