RE: Life's a changin... need Suburban advice

COOL - thanks all for the well wishes and pointers.
As I've been reading everyone's comments, I think having two heavy duty tow vehicles seems impractical. That's a lot of gas guzzling vehicles to pay for, but only gets put to work 20 times a year.
With the forums input, I think I'll get a 1 ton van dual purposed for mall crawling and towing. I totally agree with the roominess of the van compared to the 'burb. And the van costs less for more function. 'Burbs are expensive for what you get ! ! !
And the second vehicle, well, I'll just give that time. I have a sweet Dodge Charger today, maybe that can stay around another year of two :-)
Thanks for the input! ! !

Life's a changin... need Suburban advice

T W I N S on the way, they'll be here in January ! ! ! That means our camp crew will be DW, 4 boys, 1 girl, and 2 dogs.
I'm selling all my vehicles, including MH and toad, because I need people haulers. I'm thinking of tow vehicle and 30' travel trailer for the 2013 season and beyond.
Our main family vehicle will be a new GM 3500 passenger van. But not the primary tow vehicle. That van is for in-town and mall crawling, etc.
I'm looking at 2001-1005 Suburbans for towing toys, travel trailer, boat, dirt bikes. I really like the z71, but it is 1500 chassis with 5.3 motor. If I load the z71 up with family and a 30' TT, are these Suburbans out of bounds regarding capacity ?
Should I just skip the 1500 chassis and just go for the 2500 chassis ?
Thanks - - - -

RE: Rig stored ,we are at home for the winter

The map is fuzzy, but make sure Savannah, Georgia is a destination (looks like you are close..). Old buildings, lots of Civil War history, and nice place to walk and explore. Good two day trip.
Oh yeah, Savannah is one of my favorite places too !

RE: cabover window disaster

Mine does not leak, but I pay a lot of attention to that area! A $3000 repair would be half the value of my MH....
Anyways, taped off the window frame and seal then ProFlex'd it. Then put a stick on RV gutter around the window frame to gutter away rainwater.
Also eternabonded the clearance lights - never used them anyways.
Lastly, I keep my eye on the spot during every rainstorm, etc. So far so good.

RE: from Truck Camper to Class C

I've launched/retreived my 21' runabout boat twice this year with the MH. No big deal really. Just take it slow and ignore the on-lookers.
Buy you may have the same problem I do... I use the MH to tow the boat. When I get to my CG, I have no toad. For my, no toad really limits my camp experience!! My solution so far is to just have my wife drive the family van to our CG (an hr. away)so we have some transportation for sight seeing.

RE: Black Holding Tank Crack Repair

Fixed many cracks in my old tanks... Even a 11" on the bottom of the black tank.
"Plumbers Goop" $5 at Walmart or Depot..
Used a small paint brush to mash it in the cracks and built up a couple of layers of the Goop. Holding well !

RE: Class A verses Class C fuel consumption.

Me = 29' Class C w/Ford 460 gets 9MPG.
Friend = 34' Class A w/Ford 460 gets 8MPG.
Same in my book.

RE: Would you buy a used unit that you knew had leaks?

As others have said, leaks happen. But for $28k, I would keep looking. Maybe open up the price range too. Might find a little older MH for less $$, but has been in covered storage for its life.
I bought an old MH that was barn stored. Then spent $$ on the mechanicals. I'm left with a MH that has seen no weather and freshened up mechanicals.

RE: Tioga Montara 1991 fleetwood Generator won't fit

x2 that your compartment was designed to hold the Onan Emerald genset. if you have the Micro4000, definitely keep that one and modify your genset compartment. Get the Onan mounting kit and go that route. I say that because lifting/positioning that heavy genset with a homebrew kit is a lot of work (I KNOW !!!). The Onan mount kit is purpose built and the cost of it is worth it....
As far as suspension mods, start with good tires with max PSI, good shocks, and alignment. That is how my rig is setup and I find it drives perfectly. All the sway bar/air bag/steering stablizer mods never cross my mind. FYI I have Goodyear Wrangler HT tires @ 80PSI and Monroe Magnum RV shocks.

RE: Adding a generator

Been there and tried both.... The portables were OK (had a Magna 2000w and Boliy). Lots of setup fussing and at the end of the day I wanted a gen to have while in motion and run my A/C. Sold the Boliy and the Magna just fell apart and is in the garage scrap heap...
I bought a used Onan MicroLite 2800 gas. It runs the AC and all elec, extremely well built, and works great in motion. No setup/teardown and one button start. Bad news is a nice used Onan is hard to find and they sell quick! So be prepared to act quickly if you see one.
IMO, best approach is to buy an on-board gen.
PS - before the gen, my gen compartment was storage too. But then I bought a hitch haul cargo carrier and weatherproof storage bag for the hitch. For under $100 you'll have a nice storage spot once the gen goes in.

RE: Where to stay - Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

Good plan to stay at West Branch SP (NICE) and then drive in. 45 mins away from Rock & Roll.
East Harbor SP is 60-80 mins west of Cleveland so your drive in is more, BUT, it is an excellent GC and a lot of Lake/Island activities there -- Catawba, Marblehead, Put in Bay, Kellys island, etc. There is also a super walmart there for anything else you'll need :-)

RE: AFE Cold Air Intake system on a Ford V10???

I've had these intakes in all my vehicles in the past years. I have an AFE in my Dodge Charger now and a K&N in my Jeep.
IMO I don't think they do much. Especially for a motorhome.
I would sell it and use the $$ for camp gear. Maybe a nice grill :-)

RE: Hi-Lo -- would you

Before the MH I tinkered with a Hi-Lo. I like the Lo part when towing it.
I didn't like the bathroom setup with flip up walls/curtains. No privacy and we needed that with the family.
If you can clear those hurdles and the price is right... do it !

RE: checking dual tire pressure

I don't have anything on my duals and use a straight headed tire inflator. But, this is a PIA! Next time I'm putting on a dually tire inflator system regarless of the cost.
Tires and batteries are high maintenance things -- spend the $$ so they are easy to take care of !

RE: Thoughts on switching to seasonal site

Next year I'm doing seasonal, just to do something different. My extended family is getting bigger and more kids to enjoy -- so a seasonal would be easier to get the family there and enjoy it.

RE: Air conditioner only works on Generator??

I'm assuming you are plugging in at home, probably to a 15 or 20 amp circuit (common for houses/garages). Not enough amps to start your AC. You probably need 20-22 amps to start it.
Your generator (if a 4000 watt Onan, etc) produces 33 amps.
One thing to check into as to the reason..

RE: Jeep Cherokee: which way to set the ignition key

T-case in N. Auto Trans in P. Manual in 5th gear.
One click on the ignition (nothing should be on, like radio etc). Odometer will not count miles.
Tow away!
