RE: GREAT low vision Firefox add-on + good for night browsers

I have been spending the day playing with Win XP Display settings, and I must say I need to retract my original negative assessment of the usefulness of its built-in accessibility features. If white text on black background is as useful to you (or someone you know) as it is to me, the Display menu settings in XP (access from Control Panel) are very powerful, indeed. Setting 'Windows and Buttons' box to 'Windows Classic' in the Appearance tab, and setting 'Color' box to 'High Contrast Black' not only effects desktop, but all MS programs, even Open Office. I did not know this for 15 years! If you decide to use the Windows settings, it turns out that it has the same effect on the Firefox menues as NASA Night Launch, so all you would need is the Blank Your Mointor add-on for reversing the web pages. Note that the windows high contrast black also creates white text on black background for MS Excel, Word, and their Open Office clones - NOT JUST the menues, but all the background where you type a doc or do enter spreadsheet cells.

RE: GREAT low vision Firefox add-on + good for night browsers

Did you notice if you high-lite text and do a right click you can pick "easy read" and it will display that text on a separate page, white on black. I just had occasion to try this easy read feature. It was small text, and I highlighted it as though I wanted to copy or cut/paste it, hit CTRL+ALT+Z, and voila - a separate page with the white text on black in large print! Maybe no more copying stuff into MS Word for me to read it easily.

RE: GREAT low vision Firefox add-on + good for night browsers

Glad you all like it. It is far better than anything you can get from the standard software settings from FF and Win. For those websites where you cannot read some text when you toggle on Blank Your Computer, quickly toggle it off and take a look at the actual page, then toggle back.

GREAT low vision Firefox add-on + good for night browsers

For those who are aging and suffer from some macular degeneration, or like me who are otherwise vision-impaired (I have a form of retinitis pigmentosa), a white background is blinding to look at. Invariably I have had to copy text from the browser and paste it into MS Word where I could control colors. Setting the colors from the browser's tools menu can cause many websites to be unreadable, so that is a poor option. There are two add-ons available from the Mozilla site: Blank Your Monitor https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/blank-your-monitor-easy-readin/ Download this, and simply press CTRL+ALT+B and all web pages are accurately transformed to black background and white text. You can leave it on and browser defaults to it until you CTRL+ALT+B and turn it off. NASA Night Launch https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/nasa-night-launch/?src=cb-dl-users makes all Firefox menus and toolbars dark background and white text. BTW, these are great even if you got good eyes but browser at night.

RE: Mossberg says to hold off on laptop purchase

The END of the PC. The idea seems right, but the lapdoc looks like a platypus of technologies not yet integrated. Most striking to me was to learn that the screen and touchpad do not allow android hand gestures; so, all it does is it blows up your phone screen size to 12" , adds a regular keyboard, but then downgrades the phone as it takes away its great and familiar means of moving thru its menus.

RE: Mossberg says to hold off on laptop purchase

Considering Win 7 did some a big injustice by disallowing backwards compatible software use, I'm not at all interested in Win 8. Even MS's so-called 'Virtual Machine' fails. Windows 7 was NOT my idea. I never wanted anything to do with it. We special ordered a laptop w/ XP when Microsoft tried to make Vista be mandatory. 5 years on, we are nursing the unsprung hinged top Gateway laptop along as well as my reliable 8 yr old HP Pavilion w/ XP, 512k RAM, and a 2.2 GHz Athlon 3200+ chip. But the stuff is dated, and that laptop lid won't last too long, thus my interest in all the latest alternatives.

RE: Mossberg says to hold off on laptop purchase

Thanks for the insights. With the Win 8 push to touch control, the hardware we see in the next 18 months may be very innovative. Comments here have shaken my faith a good bit in touch control. Whether on a macbook's quite large large touchpad, or on the Win 7 machine, the pad seems too remote from the screen. I found this to explain Win 7 touch control.

Amazing, my new ASUS X53E laptop for $499. has the same features. I would really appreciate it if you could elaborate on how Win 7 and touchpads interact

RE: Mossberg says to hold off on laptop purchase

Thanks, Tom. I was not certain if that was so. I gather this has been an apple feature since at least mac air, some 3-4 years back? Does anybody know if Win 7 computers with touchpads do something similar as the apple laptops, and if so, for how long has this feature existed on Win laptops? I feel like I've been missing something I might have benefited from.

RE: Advice on buying an rv

At three months, your research has only just started - we spent 6 years (a bit too long, I admit!). Imagine yourself parking it at home, at restaurants, repair shops, getting gas, and at various destinations. Look at dealers' lots and then look up floor plans, imagining yourselves using it ,orning, noon, and nite. Do you want a toad, or go MH only? This alters how you camp, but toadless makes travel freer and more spontaneous. If your wife has strong reasons for something else, listen well (she may know your real preference better than you). After considering everything small from Class B, Casita TT, and small Class Cs, we ordered our 22 ft B+ sight unseen, and I think our hard research helped guide us to what was probably the most optimal choice for us... Measure twice, cut once.

RE: Mossberg says to hold off on laptop purchase

But when all is said and done, it is the wave of the future. Is that wave a gesture command :)? Do the apple mac air and mac book make use of the touch pad to do pinch and other screen controls? Same question for Win 7 and the touchpad? I only have XP.

RE: Mossberg says to hold off on laptop purchase

Good food for thought from you guys. I do have big hands and fingers, and even find the mouse pointer inaccurate on some sites - I really must think about this better. I also thought that a roomful of dictations would be weird. As for Microsoft, there is no love lost, here. It is simply the system I was first made acquainted with (other than Atari in the early '80s).

RE: Mossberg says to hold off on laptop purchase

Mossberg showed how smartphones have a microphone on the on-screen pop-up keypads that allow for near flawless dictation-to-typed words...maybe the keyboard will soon become unnecessary.

RE: Mossberg says to hold off on laptop purchase

But how many times do you want to reach up and touch your laptop screen? That is what I don't know, as I have no experience even w/ a phone or a tablet (they are too small for me to read). Watching people use hand gestures to move operations along APPEARS more natural and easy. So if I could do most web surfing with WIN 8 Metro on the screen of a machine with a slide-away, fold-back, or detachable keyboard, it might make my experience on the web easier. But I don't have experience w/ such technology to say anything for sure.

Is it true that apple will likely not employ touch screens?

Mossberg says to hold off on laptop purchase

Video I am anxious for a Win 8 tablet-laptop with at least a 15" touch screen.

RE: 2005 chevy express + replace front turn signal bulb

Got it out by the 1/4 turn way. No push in required. Grab the harness outside the housing at the base of the harness (or what i've also called the bulb assembly where the wires hook in). The base is round like a silver dollar and once I felt this was separate from its round molded housing mating support, I felr free to turn it CCW. 3157 wedge bulb.

RE: 2005 chevy express + replace front turn signal bulb

Push gently and twist. Wires are probably attached to the bulb socket, and do not unplug. The bulb assembly is not so easy to move from underneath - it seems hard to turn and I do not want to break something. FWIW, I found this on a chevy forum: ***OP***I'm trying to change the front turn lights on a 2005 Chevy Express van, I was wondering if anyone had any insight as to how to do it? It's quite frusterating and I'm not ready to take it in to the dealer and pay for it. Anyone know how??? ***Reply***You need to pop out the entire housing. Use a long flat screw driver and push-in the clip between the gap of the fender and the housing at the corner closer to the wheel well and pull it straight out. You will then see two connectors, one for the blinker/parking and the other is for parking. Twist the connector and replace the burned out bulb. Looking on right front fender side of rig, just above black bumper that wraps around from across front, I cannot tell what clip to work: the grey metal between black trim and amber plastic face, or the rounded gray plastic thingy reached best between the white metal and black trim ? And which way are you to pry the appropriate clip? or Is there a technique to twist the bulb assembly counterclockwise...it does not seem to push in ant before turning. and sense
