RE: Winegard Debuts New Omnidirectional Antenna

Somewhat related...
We use a Happauge 950 USB digital/analog tuner in the RV w/ the batwing. Is there a difference in reception strenth from one digital tuner and another?
So, for instance, is it possible that I could buy an actual small HDTV and its tuner would pick up more stations from the same antenna?
Yes...my lcd picks up 6 channels. When I use my converter box on the same tv I get 10
Wow. That's a huge difference. Do you know which lcd sets are ,ore likely to have the stronger tuners?

RE: OTA (Over the air) recording

I have read all posts. Simplest answer to my mind…
If the OP has a laptop, he can buy a USB tuner for under $100 (I have Happauge 950). It can be set to record OTA analog or digital stations manually, or far more desirably (if you have internet) it allows Tivo-like scheduled recordings using the Titan EPG (elec propgram guide) which shows all content of OTA (or campgroung cable) TV stations in your zipcode.
It, of course, allows you to watch TV on your screen and you can pause and then fast forward the broadcast). You can always send the laptop screen to a large screen TV, if desired.
If interested, I can give more detail.

RE: Verizons Home Phone Connect

We currently have a land line for local calls and incoming at $27/mo from AT&T.
Martha has a Verizon individual 450 min plan at $47/mo plus their %39/mo data plan.
Could we get the Verizon Home Connect for just $9.99/mo, or do we first have to have at least 2 cell phones and a family plan?

RE: NEW COMPUTER

Win 8 on ipad...I am amazed
LOL! Windows 8 does not run on the iPad. It's running on a PC that the iPad is connected to with a simple VNC client. You can make any OS look like it runs on an iPad this way....
Thx. I thought i watched a vid where it was actually loaded on the ipad, but all the vids are virtual, as you note.
Still, to the OP, i hope he looks closely at the advances in touch screen that win 8 offers for his possible Asus 2410 buy.
I think sufficient options for transferring and backing up his old data have been covered.

RE: NEW COMPUTER

I would hate to see you settle for Win 7 on that big touch tablet/pc - wait for Win 8 with its android/tablet like 'Metro' touch OS which includes Win 7 as a subsystem for old fashioned keyboard stuff like Word and Excel.
Win 8 also seamlessly uses the new IE 10 full-screen touch browser. It is so portable to any style computer that it will run on an apple ipad.

Nice public use of freed up airways
i reckon the cable and phone companies will buy off politicians and ensure we never see this on a widespread basis. how much does a politician charge for their service so maybe we could, as a group, chip in and out bid the companies?

RE: What is possibility of truly wireless home internet?

One of the challenges the carriers will have is capping. Currently, for smartphones and other mobile devices data is capped. But data is rarely if ever capped for home use via DSL, cablemodem, etc. In order to make cellular broadband work to the home it will have to be unlimited.
It's part of the paradox consumers face currently where everything is becoming connected to the Internet and "DVDs are dying, streaming is the future", blah blah blah and yet we get nickle & dimed for using more than 2GB/month of cellular bandwidth. Something has to give here.
amen
I just read two separate estimates saying the avg. home uses only 18 gb (AT&T), or 7 gb (Cable One).
I wonder if we are being misled somewhere.

RE: What is possibility of truly wireless home internet?

bwan, I did not follow that link story very well.
we do have verizon 4g lte in baton rouge, and it is very fast. we also have cox hi-spd internet, also very fast.
70 channel analog tv cable + internet gets cox $110/mo ($45 internet).
on the new smartphone, verizon charges $30/mo for 4gb of internet, but to use it on the PC would cost the extra $20.mo to tether.
so you have cable at $45 for unlimited net, and verizon at $50/mo for only 4gb.
I understand some folks have grandfathered unlimited data, so they essentially do not need cable internet anymore. does technology exist giving capacity from cell towers to let everyone use unlimited phone data? could this possibly include internet tv for all users?
also, how might i track how much data we download monthly from cox internet to compare with the verizon 4gb?

What is possibility of truly wireless home internet?

Does anyone have any insight into how (or if) phone companies could drop prices and wireless data could possibly make internet from cable providers obsolete?
Also, could broadcast tv shows be compressed/trimmed so that they consume less data and so might also be received from the phone providers sometime in the future?
This would be truly wireless and resuld in one less bill. But, this is probably just trading one inhuman corporate money-grabber for another.

RE: Electronic Program Guide and OTA

thx, john
actually, the happauge tuner uses titan epg to schedule recordings - it works well, but nothing as sweet as our tivo at home. while recently camped in another area, i setup a scheduled recording of an ota digital broadcast sitcom, and it worked just fine.
but while on mostly short rv trips, the ease of use of an epg built-in to a hdtv has a lot of appeal.

RE: Electronic Program Guide and OTA

It is possible we will buy a small HDTV and just take the chance that it has the berst possible EPG.
Our other option is to get a new laptop (Gateway hinge for lid/screen is failing badly after 5 yrs), and continue to use the Happauge 950 USB tuner w/ the new machine. Happauge has no EPG on OTA, but an excellent EPG for cable DVR purposes, which are superfluous on simple RV trips)

thx, biscuit, i was hoping so. in an rv away from home w/ strange stations, subchannels, etc, an epg is very useful
