RE: How to protect trailer (and us) from lightning?

I should have stated that you will hear the far off thunder first. That is when it is time to react if you choose to. Joe B is right, lightning is way faster than thunder from the same strike.

You'll hear the thunder first. That is when it is time to do whatever it is that you are going to do. I'll leave that up to you.

RE: I found this odd

Joe, you hit the nail on the head. Let the steel do it's job. Around here, if you swerve to miss an idiot or a deer, most likely you hit a tree. They don't give. Back to the subject, I wouldn't ask a wet dog to ride in the camper. If we are that overcrowded, we are probably overloaded as well.

RE: Droid monitor

The phone in question is a Motorola Droid 2. The only connector is a mini USB port. Thanks for your input. I am trying to avoid lugging a full size laptop around.

Emporia VA on I95 and US 58

Our children are grown and gone to NC. As a result we travel pretty often down the eastern shore and across 58 to Emporia and then south. They have never ticketed me, but the radar traps they run are truly excessive. We came back thru there Sunday at 8AM, and they had 3 cars out. One on I95, I guess they annexed more land to do that. One in town, and one on 58 heading east towards the Tidewater area. That couldn't be cost effective, we were about the only thing moving. I agree that speed control saves lives, and often catches criminals that are too stupid to slow down when hauling whatever they are hauling. However, enough is enough. The Feds have busted other towns, several in DE just north of us, maybe it's time for a little love for Emporia. Anyway just be careful as you travel thru the area

Droid monitor

My eyes have never been great, but as I age they are backsliding from good. Is there a monitor similar to a portable DVD player that can hook to a smart phone to give me a bigger sreen? I love this phone and leave my laptop at home a lot now when we travel, but a bigger viewing area would be great. TIA for any input.

RE: 1998 Chevy Ck3500 crew cab single wheel 4x4

It was the next gen Silverado/Sierra that had the brake/gas line rust issues. However, I see that you live in PA. All bets are off with the salt you guys use so much of. Check it over well before you buy it. If it checks out it will make you a fine truck at a low price. Yes, it will have the 4L80E. Check the axle ratio, that will make it or break it as a tow vehicle.

And at the end of the day, we are going to go in a different direction, and take it to the next level. Sorry, couldn't resist :).

RE: Financing. Retail to Retail or Wholesale to Wholesale??

If you can, sell your current unit yourself. In years past, NADA wholesale trade in was what dealers usually went by. Not anymore. We recently had a discussion with a dealer about trading, he offered 55% of wholesale. This was on a one owner in very good condition. RV wholesale numbers are only published, to my knowledge they are not yet on the web. Your local library will have the fat orange book in the reference section.

RE: ABS LIGHT ON

Whoever built the chassis would be the correct place to go. Be aware that the brakes are still fully functional, but the the ABS feasture is disabled while the problem exists.

RE: Gaston Lake, NC

I agree with Minnie for the most part. I'm not sure of the distance to South Hill to the north as far as the stores go. The rest of the comments are very true, let me add a few. The bath houses are horrible, unless they knocked them down and built new ones. The septic system has issues when the place is full, usually leading to closure of the afore mentioned bath houses. Unless they dug it up and replaced the entire system. The Golf Cart 500 every night is so bad, I have stood there with a garden house keeping the road next to our site damp to hold down the dust. Looks like a albino coal mine if you don't. I swear the local teenagers truck in extra ones for their buddies. The boat ramp is a joke for anything bigger than a john boat. The setting IS nice, right on the lake, and the people ARE nice, but the plus and minus leaves a very big negative.

RE: 2005 F350 Dually/Bio Diesel

I would use something else to start a fire. Boy Scout juice is a lot cheaper, and it will burn when matched.

RE: Ecoboost in F250's & 350's

Somebody did make a 20-22 mpg unloaded 3/4 ton. 5.9 CTD. Some version of that will be my next new to me truck. I do like the eco boost idea, a little turbo action never hurt anybody. Can't wait to see what comes out of it all.

RE: Best route through DC/Baltimore

My moto is to never ever try 495/95 in the DC area. I don't care if it is 3AM, chances are you are going to pay a price. If it isn't a hazmat wreck, it's lane closures. And rush hour never ends due to the gov flex hours, so 5AM to 10PM is still a nightmare. We lived there in the 80's and very early 90's, and it used to free up at Woodbridge, now it is jammed until Fredericksburg and sometimes halfway to Richmond. Stressful enough without towing anything.

RE: Dually 1 ton

I once dated a girl that squatted. I have also seen a post on here about squatters in a RV. Since my truck never squats, I think I will remove the overload springs to help with fuel economy. :)

RE: KIPTOPEKE STATE PARK, VA

The small town would be St Charles. Several decent restaurants, Food Lion, fast food etc. 7 miles north of the park, the actual town is on the bay west of 13. Fantastic park, but pricey if you bring pets. $50 a night with 2 dogs and sewer. See the web site for latest pricing, they may have changed it again for this year. The sites are huge, with full hookups if needed. It was a private park back when the ferrys were still running, hence the hookups. Cable TV too, connection is on the power pedestal. Awesome entertainment at the boat ramp right next to the swimming beach. Do it, you'll love it.

RE: Questions for suspenion guru's

Overload leafs do not affect static ride height. They may or may not affect loaded ride height, depending on a particular load. Speaking about my particular trucks only, your results may vary.

RE: Addding a tuner to a 1/2 ton gas Burb

A note on warranty concerns. While GM (and the other 2) are VERY interested in any diesel powertrain failures, and not so much on the gasser side, they can tell if a tune has been installed. Even if it was removed before going in for service. I have had to send PCM logs to GM to prove it one way or the other before warranty repairs were authorized.

VZW heads up on upgrades

Well, they got me. Admittedly, if I had read the fine print, I'm sure it was in there. Some years ago, a very good family friend was on hard times, so we got her a cheapie phone and put her on our plan. When the deadline approached for unlimited data, I got a Droid, and used her upgrade for a price break on my new phone. Turns out that didn't extend my contract for 2 years, but hers. Now she is back on her feet, and we want to do away with that extra line. No go says VZW. No offer of alternatives until I asked if I could take that number, and kill mine or my DW's. We have both had these #'s for a very long time, but one of them has to go. I imagine it will be mine. Not that big a deal, just be aware. When it was just us and our 2 DDs, I guess it always evened out, so I never picked up on it.
