RE: Yellowstone & Glacier Parks--Activities for children?

If you go into Canada, ALL must have passports in order to return. No matter how young. This is incorrect. From the U.S. customs web site. Children: Beginning June 1, 2009, U.S. and Canadian citizen children under age 16 arriving by land or sea from contiguous territory may also present an original or copy of his or her birth certificate, a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, a Naturalization Certificate, or a Canadian Citizenship Card.

RE: How do you log your mileage on your tt?

The only thing we do take note of, is which sites at different parks we like and which ones we don't and why. That is the only thing we keep notes on also.

RE: Telling a poster to "do a SEARCH"

X2 I'm a retired IT engineer. I know how to do a "search" function, both complex Boolean and Linear plain English. The problem arises when you are looking for a simple, up-to-date answer to a simple, forward question and you don't care to wade through 1,000 posts that may or may not have an answer that bears directly to your dilemma. When someone needs a simple, up-to-date answer to a simple question, why then is it greeted with: "Do A Search!"? A concise answer, or no answer at all, thank-you, with an "If you need more information or other ideas, you can use the Search function..." would be ever so much more civilized and conducive to the garnering of "new information" pertaining to a question that may have better answers than those posted 30 days ago and probably better than those answers of a year ago. Times change and along with it the answers evolve based on new products, ideas and and the dissemination of that information. The true purpose of "forum"... Nicely stated. Forums are about the exchange of ideas and information. I feel that the Do a Search reply to be a bit rude.

RE: No Television??

No TV in the TT. We did buy a portable DVD player but have never used it. We read, play cards or other games is the weather is bad.

RE: Minnesota Goes After RV Sales Tax

Its funny how a state reaping the benefit of taxes paid by people of other states would also try to undermine those states and support the tax cheats from those same states… Just because Montana does not have a sales tax does not mean that Montana supports tax cheats. Montana does not encourage this practice and there is no legal reason to prevent someone form forming a corporation in another state.

RE: To Grease or not to Grease. That is the Question?

I grease. I also drink water from the water tank and use the trailer toilet so that is the kind of shady character I am.

RE: Yet another Wintnerization Q-Why blow the lines?

I do both. Here is why. 1. We can get early freezes here in Northern Montana and I like to protect the trailer before I am finally ready to put it to bed for the winter. I usually blow it out in mid/late Sept but don't put the pink stuff in until late Oct. That way it is protected if we have an early cold snap but we can still use it if the weather turn nice again. 2. I already own an air compressor. Would I buy one just to blow the trailer out. Probably not. 3. It gets pretty cold here and for the 6 to 8 bucks for a couple of gallons of antifreeze, I think it is worth the little extra effort and money to be sure.

RE: Storing For The Winter

Battery on cement floor is bad for it. . Total myth. This is one of the things that keeps getting passed on and has no truth to it. Snopes Battery I have two batteries and do not remove them. I do put a charger on them once in the middle of the winter just to top them off.

RE: Should Trailer tires be set cold at less than max press?

You are assuming that replacement tires from different manufacturers made at different times over the life of the vehicle will have the same inflation requirements as the original equipment tires. I am not convinced that is an accurate assumption. It is not unsafe to inflate trailer tires to the maximum pressure although it may lead to excessive center wear. Any lesser pressure carries with it a risk of overheating if you don't do it per specifications. In the absence of accurate weight measurements for each tire position and an inflation table for that specific brand and model of tire, I believe inflation to the maximum listed on the sidewall is the safest course of action. I am not assuming. All tires of the same load range have the same inflation ratings. Tire Rack I agree that it is better to over inflate that under. Inflating to the max will result in some over inflation in most cases but it is better than having under inflated tires.

RE: Should Trailer tires be set cold at less than max press?

Here's what makes no sense with your argument: How can an automobile manufacturer possibly know (in advance) the optimal structural design/pressure limits of your replacement tires? When in doubt, read the sidewall and follow the recommendations. I can't tell you the number of times that some (Insert Name) Oil Change has has sent my 44 psi tires home with 32 psi because of a door sticker. Your argument makes no sense. Tire manufactures base the recommended inflation on the load that is on the tire. The max pressure on the side of the tire is for the maximum rated load. If you replace your tire with the same load rating as the orig tires and do not have your vehicle loaded to the max, the door sticker will be correct. If you replace your tires with a different load rated tire, then you would need to consult the tire manufacture for a inflation chart. The max listed on the sidewall is still not the correct number unless you are at the max rated load also listed on the sidewall.

RE: Big RV in Yellowstone

There are only two campgrounds in the park that are still open that can handle a rig your size. Mammoth and Madison. Mammoth is out of the way on your route so the only option in the park is Madison. Fishing Bridge closed in Sept. If you are looking for hookups you will have to stay outside the park. Not sure about closing dates for private campgrounds. Looks like most of the campgrounds in Grand Tetons are closed also.

RE: End of another camping season

Started winterizing last week. We removed the freezable stuff and blew out the water lines. Still need to add pink stuff, check tires, fill propane and disconnect batteries but will get all that done in the next few weeks. Had a good summer but it just seems too short.

I love this forum. We have heated discussions about towing capabilities, tire pressure, winterizing, generators, black tank cleaning and now .... Cinder Blocks :B

RE: What DON'T you use??

TV cable or antenna - No TV. Microwave - removed it for more storage space. Outside shower. Don't use the A/C or city water hookups too often as we dry camp mostly. We use everything else. We drink and cook with water from the water tank. We use the shower. We even use the toilet. We cook on the stove and bake in the oven. It gets pretty cold here in the spring and fall so we use the furnace. Even when dry camping we try to minimize running the generator but we do use it. Have even had to use the spare tire.

RE: Brand new to camping-need some advice

The last TT I would buy would be a 20 year old TT on Craigslist. I have been camping for the last three years in a 20 year old trailer and it works great for us. We did not have to take out a big loan or buy a new pickup to be able to tow it. There is nothing wrong with buying a used trailer from a private party. As it was said in other posts. 1. Check very carefully for leaks in the roof and siding. 2. Make sure everything works. Don't take their word for it. Have them run everything to verify it works. 3. Make sure you check the water system for leaks. Turn on the pump and run water through faucets, toilet etc. The pump should quit running when you turn all the faucets etc. off. If it keeps running or runs occasionally you have leaks in the water system. 4. Check the tires for wear and cracking in the sidewalls. 5. Ask if the bearings have been repacked and brakes adjusted every few years. If they give you a blank look, you know that they have not done standard preventative maintenance. Hang in there and keep looking. You will find something that works for you. Mike

RE: Did I mess up?

Do you honestly think your washing machine is just made of metal and thick material. There is plastic in almost everything made nowadays. You are totally overreacting to the use of bleach. It is one of the best and inexpensive sanitizing methods available. It is much better than the anti-bacterial soaps that are breeding antibiotic resistant bacteria.

RE: Did I mess up?

Interesting responses about the bleach. I wonder how many of the anti-bleach people use bleach to sanitize their water systems and add it to their laundry. Seems to work fine for that without damaging anything. Also as stated above these are holding tanks not septic so worrying about killing the helpful bacteria is nonsense.

RE: Are we fast, slow, or average in hooking up and unhooking?

From the time I get to the storage facility to the time we're ready to pull out, usually just under 20 minutes passes...when we get back to drop off the TT, it's maybe five minutes less than that...we have w/d, so there's that...plus the sway bar...plus hooking on/unhooking the strap-on 'extra' mirrors... just curious...are we fast, slow, or just about average in terms of the time it takes to hook up at the start of a trip & to unhook at the end? Pretty quick but you can do better. Time to start training and develop a plan to cut this down. :B :B

RE: Lug nuts

I have faithfully re torqued mine every time I have taken off the wheels. I have never had one loosen up. I have always wondered why you would have to do this on a trailer and not a car. I think Dexters explanation is plausible but I suspect it is more lawyer rather than fact based. Mike
