RE: Installed 2nd AC but no air coming through ducts---UPDATE

UPDATE:: I wanted to report back on getting this problem solved. I cut the holes in the ductwork as the schematic from the factory showed me to do. I had to order the vent covers from the factory because I couldn't find any place that had them to match the original covers, but they were reasonably priced. It is all connected & now blowing COLD air through the vents rather than the speakers & other openings. Thanks to everyone for their input, especially Doug who put me on the right track.

RE: Installed 2nd AC but no air coming through ducts---UPDATE

OK guys, thanks for the help. I called Holiday Rambler today & they emailed me a schematic of the ac ducts to show me exactly where I could cut the vents. He recommended an additional 3 vents. We aren't home right now but when we get back next week I will cut them & place the registers then report back to let you know how it turned out. I expect the air will THEN be blowing out of the ducts (that are already there, factory installed) via the vents (that I had to cut). Doug you were correct & I wasn't doubting what you said but sure didn't want to start cutting without having any real idea where the duct ended. Thanks...Mac

RE: Installed 2nd AC but no air coming through ducts---UPDATE

I appreciate all of the replies guys. I made sure that there was factory ducts in place for the 2nd ac, or at least is says in the brochure that it is wired & ducted. @hershey, I am not sure if I could ever get a mirror up there since it is a rather small hole but I might give it a try just to see whats there. @fla-gypsy their is plenty of COLD air coming out around the speakers that are in the ceiling & around the unit itself. @roadrunners, yes the plentum/return air is covered with a grid type panel to allow return flow in the square where the fan was. @jimmyfred, I don't believe that the second ac should only blow from the ceiling register to be true due to the information I found in the original brochure regarding the ducts being in place from the factory. @ dougrainer, I follow your line of thought on this but for the brochure to say it is ducted from the factory for a second air unit I am not sure what that means. I used my fish tape to run the length of the vent thinking maybe there was some block but the tape ended at 16' & I didn't find anything blocking the duct. I am going to attempt to find someone at the number Holiday Rambler lists that can tell me more about what is needed to duct the ac. Doug as I said I think you are correct but I don't want to start cutting holes until I know for sure where to cut them. And no Doug, it isn't so straight forward at this point. Thanks again to everyone for taking the time to reply. Mac

Installed 2nd AC but no air coming through ducts---UPDATE

I just finished installing a second AC in our 2005 Holiday Rambler Alumascape fifth wheel. I installed it where the thermostatically controlled Fantastic Fan was in the living area. The install was fairly straight forward other than trying to fish the thermostat wires across the roof & down the wall. I never did get the wire down the wall so ended up having to hide the wire behind that wire cover stuff that is on the wall (name escapes me right now). When I turned the ac on it works great, blows really cold air & works as it should EXCEPT there is no air coming through the ducts. I initially thought there was likely a block at the end of the duct where the original ac ended but that wasn't the case. I am at a loss now as to where/how to hook the ducts into the second unit or what I might have done incorrectly. Has anyone else had this problem & if so how did you find/fix the problem? You help is always appreciated. Mac

New RV Park in Red Deer AB??

We will be leaving in about 10 days going to AK & the friends that always travel up there with us said they thought they remembered seeing a new rv park in/near Red Deer AB when we were up there in 2010. I have done a search & can't find anything so thought I would check with those of you that live in that area & see if there is indeed a new rv park. We usually stay at Westerner CG. Thanks for your help.

Furnace seems to be TOO hot!

When we were in Alaska in '10 we used a tremendous amount of propane in comparison to the amount we have always used in previous trips. We started noticing that when the furnace ignited it would roar like a blow torch. Today when we had the furnace out for another problem we pulled the orfice out & it has a GIANT hole in it (where the propane comes out not an "extra hole)& the number 49 on it. Not sure if the number 49 tells anything or not but thought I'd throw it out there just in case. We also noticed that the plastic part of the vent covers was getting warm enough to actually warp them out of shape. Mac feels that it is burning too hot & perhaps needs a smaller orfice but that is just a guess. Can anyone shed any light on this for us? Oh, it is a 40,000 btu furnace if that matters. Thanks for helping.

RE: "explosive" sound when furnace ignites--SOLVED

Mac is still out working on the furnace but asked me go ahead & post that he did find all parts of the furnace FULL of dauber mud. Of course it was all caked & hard as a rock so he had to use several different methods of removal but he did get them all out & no explosive sounds now. Thanks for the help everyone. He has another question regardling the orfice but I will put it in a different post for max exposure. Thanks again!!

RE: "explosive" sound when furnace ignites--SOLVED

Thanks for the postings so far & as soon as I can figure it out I will let everyone know what I found. I am not at all comfortable with leaving as is, just doesn't sound like it should at all & I too feel it could be dangerous. Mac

"explosive" sound when furnace ignites--SOLVED

I am sure someone here can help me figure out this problem. We are getting ready for a trip to Alaska & as I began to check everything out I found that the furnace, when igniting, has an "explosive" sound. The best way I know to explain it is that it sounds like the propane runs too long prior to the ignitor doing it's thing & then when it all comes together it makes a loud poof sound or like gasoline when thrown on an already burning fire. If anyone has any ideas as to what this might be or how to fix it I sure would appreciate the help. I plan to take the orfice out tomorrow & see if I can see anything wrong there but just thought I'd start picking you guys brains for help. Thanks, Mac

RE: Weather Alert Radios? Carry and use them in

We ALWAYS have our weather radio with us. Being from Oklahoma we know just how quickly storms can pop up & we like knowing about them asap. Somewhere I printed off a picture of each state with the counties depicted in that state. I keep that in a folder so that makes it easy to look up whether we are in line with the storms or not.

RE: Crockpot Use In Towed Not Being Towed?

On our last trip to Alaska I cooked dinner in the crock pot almost nightly, using an inverter. Ours is a 500 watt inverter & it worked perfectly using the crock pot on the low setting. Good luck. Becky

RE: Date is set ... sort of

Robert & Diann we are planning to leave southern Oklahoma around that same time & although this will be our 5th trip up it will be our first real leisurely trip. The rest have been made more with fishing in mind so we didn't spend a lot of time "smelling the roses" along the way. Have a safe trip & maybe we will see you along the way.

RE: vehicle rock protection going to Alaska

Jim, although most will tell you there is no need for extra precautions we say better safe than sorry & use a shield on the front of the truck made from hardware cloth & mud flaps on the back of the truck to help with the rocks kicking up. We don't do anything particular to the lower part of the fifth wheel but our friends have a light weight piece of carpet that they use by putting a rod across the top & bungee cords on each of the 2 lower corners. We have had broken windshields going to AK but then we have also had them here in the lower 48. The only reason we take these precautions is depending on where you are "if" you should get a rock in the radiator or truck light it could postpone your trip awhile getting parts to fix it with. We are also planning a trip up the summer (in May). It will be our seventh trip. Enjoy your trip, it is a beautiful one!! Mac

Need help with route to Alaska

We have been to Alaska numerous times but are thinking about taking a different route this year. We always go up to Montana & cross the border at Coutts, but are considering going up via Saskatchewan, crossing at North Portal. There is no particular reason for the change in route other than seeing new scenery. Any pros or cons to this route would be appreciated. Thanks for your input.

RE: refrige freezer

Thanks for the replies regarding the need for minus temps in the freezer. That was my suspicion but wasn't sure. We are aware of not over packing it but it doesn't matter if it is full or just the ice cream in there it doesn't freeze hard so now we know why. Thanks again.
