RE: Highway 395 North

395 hits the I 15 in Victorville, but if you want to get more to the west you can take a short turn off that will take you to the I 15 to the west.
The section from the I 15 up to about where it is paralleling 5/99 (to the east, of course) is pretty slow driving as it winds through small desert communities, lot's of Harley packs on weekends, narrow, rough roads, and stop signs/lights galore.
I find it sometimes to try to catch it over by the Grapevine to avoid all that other crud.
From there north, though, it's a great trip.

RE: Cat C-7 Fan Hub Shot Again

Great info edNdonna.
Looks like it is a change over of a few items but under $300. Can't understand why I got charged about $200 for just my bearing, but when you are stuck in the desert at 10:30 at night, you tend not to complain too loudly.
CAT owners, bookmark this threa.

RE: ABS Light ON

Mine did that too. It was the sensor for the brake fluid reservoir. The fluid was a bit low.....Cheap fix..
That too. But then I would worry why it was losing fluid.
Because of a panic stop I put extra pressure on the brake system that caused a leak in one of the lines at a fitting. A 1/8th turn to tighten, another cheap fix. :)
Now THAT is a good result. Found a defect just in time.

RE: ABS Light ON

I would hope owners of rigs with average weights of 10,000 to 45,000 pounds would be aware enough of their rig's fluid statuses to know if a sudden loss of fluid is different from an eventual, and progressive (read: observable) loss of resorvoir level as to said fluid.
Then again, the DS's I often see on the road aren't even qualified to have a bus pass.

Randallb:
You are correct. Oddly enough, when I had my experience, the mechanic could only locate a belt that was about .5 cm LONGER. Maybe the factory was using the wrong belt, causing the failure.
You would think the tensioner would handle a .5 cm difference, but I am not a mechanicla engineer, so who knows.

RE: Have you damaged your car while being towed?

We had 1987 Jeep and neutral and transfer case in neutral did the trick. Slick as a whistle. Now, upgraded Jeep to 2003. Same manual transmission, neutral and transfer case in neutral. NOT! One little paragraph in the owners manual...put in gear. Oops. Never a good sign when people are telling you your toad is smoking. $2000 for new transmission. Lesson learned.
I am by no means a Jeep Wrangler expert, but a far as I know, the YJ and TJ changes included a new transfer case that needs to be lubricated while in freewheel mode differently. It's my understanding to aid this, you leave the trans in gear if manual or park if auto to accomplish this.
I have a 2004 Wrangler Sahara with auto trans, and this is the proscribed method.

RE: ABS Light ON

YC 1 might have great info, but mine only does it if the battery voltage is low from sitting long. Since you notice it when you first start up after storing, that could be your problem. After enough running time and batts read more charged, the light goes off. I'm talking 10-15 minutes running.

RE: Cat C-7 Fan Hub Shot Again

Brett:
Can I ask you for a favor.
If you have it handy, do you know of the parts numbers for the new mount, zerk fitted bearing and any parts needed to convert to the zerk pulley mount?
Also, what is the preferred schedule to lube the zerk bearing in both hours and miles?
Also, do you have any knowledge of this "two part" bearing these guys used on mine?
I have the part number somewhere for the bearing they used. I'll try to post it later.

RE: Cat C-7 Fan Hub Shot Again

Cont:
Next morning, I got up extra early as GS service is back east, got a rep on the phone and arranged a repair facility to come out. They called me to get early info on the repair. I told them the belt broke. They asked me to turn all the engine accessories and report back to them any that didn't turn. They suspected a seized alternator or pump.
Turns out, when I hand spun the fan blade, it wobbled like crazy, indicating the mount or bearing was busted.
They surmised that the problem was most likely a bad bearing and would come out with a belt and remove the mount and bring it back to their shop for repair.
Sure enough, they removed whole fan, mount and checked the bearing. It was shot. They did the removal from the floor of the rear wardrobe floor using a 90 degree air powered tool. No need to remove the radiator.
Anyhow, after many hours, they fixed the bearing and mounted the whole assembly back onto the rear of the engine, popped on the belt, and did a test run of the engine. Everything was working peaches.
Bill was about 1700.00 including parts. It may seem steep, but this was 10-12 hours of work, the repair place did it roadside, and they were driving back forth from Fort Mohave.
Roughly 250.00 of the bill was the part, the bearing.
Here's where it gets interesting.
The mechanic when trying to order the new bearing from CAT in Kingman, was asked if he wanted the one piece bearing or the two piece bearing. Apparently there is a newer version that CAT recommended. I can't recall now if it was originally a one piece being replaced by a two piece or the reverse, (I believe it was one piece replaced by two piece) but whatever they used has now lasted an additional 30000 miles.

RE: Cat C-7 Fan Hub Shot Again

Brett:
I'll have to respectively disagree with you on the out of balance thing if it is factory, but my experience is anecdotal.
My situation happened about 5 years ago. My rig had about 14000 miles on it. I was headed from So Cal to Flagstaff the first week of December. I lost the belt as the when the bearing goes, the pulley loses it's base and wobbles crazily, cutting up the belt until the belt rips apart. I lost the belt about 70 miles west of Needles, at 10:30 at night.
I didn't see it coming as I had no warning like a hum, vibration or any other sensory clue. My first warning was a Christmas tree of lights also known as my Freightliner dash, due to overheating. Losing the belt caused an overheat. Since it was at night, I was watching the road more than the dash gauges.
Anyhow, I was able to pull off immediately. I grabbed a flashlight and through the let rear cabinet door I could observe the rear section of the engine. I saw the belt broken and hanging there and pulled it out, followed by a call to Good Sam Road Service. They got me a big rig tow out of 29 Palms and pulled me to the rest stop 30 miles to the west of Needles. Apparently, that is the closest they can tow to Needles for side service.

RE: Have you damaged your car while being towed?

Towing my '85 MR2 is super convenient as the key needs only to be in the ignition to unlock the steering. Having towed it from Oregon to Virginia and back 5 times without incident, we were feeling very confident, I guess over confident. I learned the hard way that just inserting the key doesn't unlock the steering, you need to turn the key on then off to do so. We had taken the MR2 to explore Meridian, MS, and parked it right behind the motor home and took the keys inside for the night. The next morning hooked up the tow bar and leaned the hard way just inserting the key wasn't sufficient to unlock the steering. Drove over 200 miles thinking there must be a little side wind, wrong! Passing motorist motioned for me to pull over where I found both front tires down to the cords with golf ball sized chunks of tread still randomly attached. Took the car to a tire shop where the tire technician said "Senor, what happened to your tires?" A good lesson learned, Bob
Yep, that is real easy to do.
Mine is not as bad, but one trip, I stopped for an overnight at the CW in Bakersfield, CA. I accidently parked in a real dark place in the lot, and decided to move the rig and Wrangler, still attached, to a better lit spot. Fired up the Cat and moved in a long half circle turn to another part of the lot. Got out, wnet back to Jeep and realized it was all locked up with the key in my pocket.
luckily when the wheels tunred and locked they were already slightly turned inthe correct side. I couldn't even see any drag marks on the pavement.

RE: 2012 Ram 2500 retractable bed covers

I am glad you brought this up, I am also looking at a cover for my 2012 Ram 2500 and am looking at the Bakflip series as well (The G2 in particular). Looking forward to others opinion's on this. Here is a link from Dodge Ram Forumz in reference to Bakflip and Extang covers.
Same model I am considering. I like the price, too.

2012 Ram 2500 retractable bed covers

Who's using what, and where did you gets yours?
I'm looking for opinions and info on the segmented, retractable "tonneau" covers, like the BAK system. I prefer to have one that locks every 12 or so inches, and manual only, no electrics.
