RE: Newbie Hitch Selection

The hitch is heavy, maybe 150# total weight. When I take mine out I do it in pieces(3 pieces, the head, the body and the rails) and then it isn't bad. When you take the rails out there is nothing left in the bed, 4 holes that are drilled into the floor of the bed that large pins drop into, that's it. Time is maybe 10 minutes, less if you have help. My box is also 6'6" but I don't have the new style cap. I will say this, it takes all the worry out of turning.

RE: Newbie Hitch Selection

Pull Rite SuperGlide 16K Auto slide with super rail kit – about $2,000. We have had this hitch for three years and it has been great, trouble free and little to no maintenance. I use Slip Plate on it which is a graphite dry lubricant, and it operates worry free (or it has for us). I do not know if you need the slider with the new cap design but if you go that way this is a great hitch. Not sure I have ever heard anything negative except for cost and weight! MHO..

RE: Welding complete - thanks Lippert

Yes, I know Lippert's name is often MUD around here... but...we are happy. After communicating with Lippert for a month, we finally made connections and had our 2006 Alpenlite reinforced at the shackles by their mobile welder. He also added a support beam for each axle. The repair was free! Yesterday watched as the rig backed up with a very tight turn and those axles don't move a bit... only the tire flexs a bit or is pushed. It took him nearly 4 hrs. We had to remove the bellypan - which had to be cut to be removed. Putting it back on was a challenge. But now we are very familiar with the underside of the rig - and gorilla tape. He did say that it was strange to have Dexter axles on a Lippert frame...and that some of our issue might be Alpenlite's with the installation of the airbags...and it was the first time he'd seen that combination. We are just happy to mark that concern off our list for the time being - life is good! Is it possible for you to post some pictures of what the welders finished product looks like? I would for one, be interested in seeing it. The gross on my 5ver is 11,200. I have weighed it fulled loaded with fuel, water, propane and generator plus personal items and have always been below gross weight. BUT I added a receiver hitch and frequently either pull a boat or my Ranger, probably never over 2,000 pounds and maybe at the most 300 pounds tongue weight. I also raised my trailer as high as it will go to get it to ride level with the truck. I also had problems with the frame and shackles. In looking at the entire design it was easy to see why! When lifted like mine there is a terrific amount of load put on the spring shackles (left to right) and I decided to beef mine up. I welded 2" square tube from left to right attached to the frame above the shackles then welded 2" square tube gussets from the added cross members to the shackles. It does not move at all now and I feel comfortable with my fix. Would be interesting to see what a pro-welder fix looks like?

RE: Storable BBQ??

This may be bigger than you want but the Weber Q100 is the best grill that I have ever owned and fits easily into the basement of our rig.

RE: trailer tires for 5th wheel

LT is the way to go if you can find some to fit, I went with BF Goodrich Commercial TA's and very satisfied with them. After many problems with ST tires and at the advice of a major tire distributor I switched to LT's (same as above post) and have been trouble free after 3 years and probably 30,000 miles. NO REGRETS

RE: Highway 12 from Missoula,MT to Lewiston, ID.

They need the snow badly, the entire country does but especially the NW.Oh I know, believe me. Our snowmobile club has not been able to ride since the 4th of July. Yes, we need the snow, both for recreation and water contents. Yes, they did hold a ride on the 4th of July, that's how much snow we had last year. So now you have the Rzr so you don't have to worry about snow? I grew up riding snow machines in Minnesota, much prefer the Ranger in the desert SW...no near as cold!

Highway 12 from Missoula,MT to Lewiston, ID.

Highway 12 from Missoula,MT to Lewiston, ID. Actually I am coming out of Phoenix,AZ. I will be towing a boat behind my rig and trying to get to Joseph, OR. and Wallowa Lake. I have a cousin who will meet us in Lewiston and pull the boat back to Joseph. I can legally double tow in AZ,NV,UT,MT and ID but not in Oregon. I have double towed the boat to Oregon the past two years but usually go into Malin where I have B-n-Law where I leave the boat then go back for it. This year planning to do something different and have family in Missoula so thinking that way?? Just wondering about this one stretch of highway? Thanks

RE: Route 129 and 3 from Lewiston, Idaho to Enterprise,OR

Okay, sounds like something I would be comfortable with, I have driven Grand Mesa in CO and Lizard Pass and some pretty steep grades on some secondary highways in N.CA. Now I have another question, Highway 12 from Missoula,MT to Lewiston, ID. Actually I am coming out of Phoenix,AZ. RE: Route 129 and 3 from Lewiston, Idaho to Enterprise,OR

Thanks for the replies. I have been to Joseph and to the Hells Canyon overlook and to Halfway. It is beautiful county for sure. We too have a cousin that lives in Joseph (small world). We will be doing a large family gathering at Wallowa Lake. We did this last year also only we had been visiting in central Oregon so came into Joseph from Pendleton.

Route 129 and 3 from Lewiston, Idaho to Enterprise,OR

Is there any problems to be aware of taking highway 129 south out of Lewiston, ID to highway 3 in Oregon and then down to Enterprise. Equipment is what is in signature. Thanks

RE: what models 30' under with good counter space

We are on our third 5ver and first with a rear kitchen. The wife will never go back, we have never had a drawer or cabinet come open nor a broken dish in the rear kitchen. We spend 3 to 4 months per year in this rig and find it very comfortable but we all have different likes and needs, that is why there are so many floor plans out there.Good luck on your search.

RE: Auto-slider hitchh vs Manual-slider

I too have the 16K Superglide, I installed it myself on Dodge Quad Cab, keep it clean and lubricated with SlipPlate per instructions and I can't imaging not having it. I love it....and I, like the rest, can't imagine how it could cause damage to the tailgate, had to be user issue in my opinion.

RE: Tell me about towing doubles in the illegal Western states

I double tow my 16'aluminum boat "or" a Polaris Ranger more than I tow single. I drove tractor trailer when I was younger, realize there are limitations and plan ahead for fuel stops etc: That doesn't answer the OP though. I live in AZ, am under 65' barely, so good to go here. I also spend the summers in Oregon and I pull through CA to get there. I got the medical endorsements required (did a lot of research) to be legal there. It is not legal in Oregon. My BIL lives 1 mile into Oregon from the CA border, I do risk towing that far on county roads. From that point I make two trips everywhere I want to have my boat?? That is a lot of driving, last year 1,200 miles extra actually. We spend at least a month on the Columbia River and I love to fish it so I make that sacrifice. One of my friends that we visit with there is a retired State Police, we have had many discussions about the subject. He shared with me that he has a neighbor who double tows in Oregon, he sneaks away at night and returns at night and had been for years. HE FINALLY GOT CAUGHT THIS WINTER, not sure about all the details by my friend said he was at his house crying about the fine!!! I have no problem double towing, most people that say there is a problem have never done it and it is probably good that they don't. I wish they would change it in WA and OR, they are beautiful states and have some great fishing! I believe they are the only two states west of the Mississippi that it is illegal. (with restrictions)
