RE: Moab - Where to stay

I just stayed in Moab Rim campground and rented from Cliffhanger Jeep Rental. Good experiences with both.
Cliffhanger is pretty liberal trail usage. Of all the ones I could find online they were the least limiting of where you could take it, so thats who I went with.

RE: What size Camper can I carry

I'd run it all day long. I did the math on my 2006 and a future Chalet and I'm comfortable with it.

RE: solar troubleshoot

BFL I dont have a shunt. I had meant to say that I was receiving no information(that is a "0" reading) from the solar panel but was having no problem with the battery and temp readings.
Harold- I did try that and everything read fine
But I did figure it out. Getting frustrated I decided to test the wire ends at the controller, thinking that I should know if the power was making through the line. I disconnected the multimeter from the panel, headed down, glanced at the remote monitor.....and...it was reading properly.......
So some how having the multimeter hooked up was shorting out the system.
Thanks for the replies though. I tried to calling Morningstar 2 times over a few hours, left messages and never got a call back.

solar troubleshoot

What I have:
Lance 992
Ran new wiring from the roof.
Sunsaver MPPT 15
AM Solar 100watt panel
I have the panel temporarily connected, with my multimeter on it so I know I'm getting power. 2-3amps
All the Sunsaver stuff is saying everything is ok, the remote shows no errors.
I get battery and temp info on the remote but no solar info?
But, just now looking at the directions again, I see the solar panel wiring is supposed to have an 'earth ground'? huh? is that just grounding it to the camper? I'm guessing thats my problem?

solar-perpendicular or parallel?

I'm trying to mount my solar panel on my Lance 992.
I went and got a roof rack system to mount to my existing bars. I wanted to do it this way so I didnt have to drill any holes in the roof. BUT I find that its not going to work. Not enough space, UNLESS I mount the panel perpendicular to the camper rather than the parallel that is most common.
Other than drag and maybe increased flexing of the load bars does anyone see a problem with mounting them this way?
Any one done it this way?
thanks

Solar/plumbing vent

Does anyone see a problem with routing the wires from the solar panel into and out of the vent tube for the bathroom?
I was thinking of some plumbers caulk or the equivalent to seal the hole I would have to drill.
Why? because it would the be the easiest and shortest run from the panel to the controller, and subsequently the batteries.
thanks

RE: Lance Max ceiling.

From the pictures of current 992 it looks like your batteries are behind the bathroom. How about using the bathroom plumbing vent pipe area to route your solar wires from the roof to the battery compartment.
good luck
John
Yes they are. And you know I hadnt really thought of that idea. I guess if I sealed up the hole I'd drill with plumbers caulk or something like it would prevent any fumes from coming in.

Lance Max ceiling.

Finally getting around to working on installing solar in my 2008 Lance 992.
I want to upgrade the wiring from the pre-wire plus I'd like to have the controller a lot closer to the batteries than Lance planned.
I had hoped to be able to use the pre-wire as a 'snake' to pull the new wiring through but thats going to be a no go as its way too tight. I'm assuming its making a couple of 90 degree corners and its just drag, not 'short wiring'
That being said I cant do a normal refrigerator vent as my batteries are on the opposite side as the fridge. I also have the second slide which complicates things a little
That being said I was wondering if anyone had taken down the ceiling panels and whats involved?
any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated too.

RE: 2006 Ford F250 XLT 6.0 Turbo Diesel To Haul My Camper?

I LOVE my 6.0 and as this far have had ZERO problems.
That being said its my personal belief, based on nothing other than my observations, that the motor NEEDS to be worked to be happy. Long idle times and people who use it as a Daily Driver seem, again IME, be the ones who have the majority of problems.
That being said, even with my love for my 06, I'd pass on a 2003 or 4 UNLESS its got a record of trouble free miles.
Fuel mileage=
Camper only=10ish-11.67mpg
Camper towing offroad Bronco(19,200lbs) 9.45-10.5mpg East Coast. I'm sure the Rockies would change that
Towing two car gooseneck (@22,000lbs) 7.5-11mpg. 7.5 was over Eisenhower pass, 11 was through Kansas. East Coast hills 9.5-10.5
Its been years since I had no load so couldnt even begin to tell you what it gets unloaded.

RE: Short Pop-up with bathroom

Hmmmm Interesting. I hadnt even gotten around to looking at weights yet.
I think that I may have to just buy an older used one, gut it, and re-make to what I need. Toilet, small sink for my gray, and sleeping area. Very minimalistic. Like I had said I'm really only looking at it for day or overnight trips. If I want more I can just take the 992.
NO manufacturer makes what the OP is looking for.
Despite Northstar's advertising that depicts a unit on a Tacoma the fact-of-the-matter is that the 1500+ pounds DRY weight is already way over the truck's capabilities before any gear/supplies/people are even loaded.
The Outfitter unit is marketed for the Tundra/Titan trucks not their smaller cousins. Also the Tundra unit is a smaller/lighter version of the regular Apex8.
The link provided for the Hallmark unit clearly states it is spec'ed for FULL sized shortbed trucks, which have wider beds then the Tacoma.
The Fourwheelcamper unit is the best the OP can hope for. I do note that their claim concerning the shower that "Obviously, this is a unique approach and our own design." is misleading, as ClassB vans and Alaskan TCs have been using this exact method for quite a few years.

Short Pop-up with bathroom

Anybody know of a short 6-6.5' pop-up that has both a grey water system and a toilet?
I'd need both for my intended use(beach use)
Thinking of a second smaller camper on the DD Tacoma6' bed) for day-trips or overnights.

RE: Chalet Quad Slide

X2
During a hurricane I've had 5 adults and 2 kids in my Lance 992 and have been very comfortable. The 2 other campers in the group were non-slides. If we had a non-slide everyone would have had to hang out in their own campers for lack of room.
A rainy day at the beach with a non-slide would be a drag IMO.
I'm a double slide looking to upgrade to a triple slide kinda camper!
A Slide out is the best thing in a TC. We can be 4 in our unit and be comfortable.
As my wife says we can pass each other without getting pregnant.

RE: Flat towing versus trailering, advantages/disadvantages?

and that would be about 12 pounds!!!
The biggy is you can back up. I hope I won't have to ever go back to towing four down.

What's with the axle being so far back? That trailer must have about 50% tongue weight.

RE: just wondering what you all think about these solar vents

I was thinking of throwing a few of these in my fridge vent to get a lil air flowing to help cooling during summers on the beach.

RE: MPG and weight

Drag is far more important then weight
IME thats on the money. My truck with camper on gets 10mpg give or take a few tenths. When I flat towed my DD Jeep behind it(3500lbs total) or my Off-road truck(6500lbs total) it only drops an average of .5 mpg on my normal trips. The big drag chute upfront makes more of a difference than the weight of my set up.
