RE: Anyone have anything good to say about Ford's 6.4L Diesel

I'm at 55K. Not a problem with the moter or transmission. I tow a 5th wheel a little over 14k. Only problem was a vibration from the drive shaft when loaded which was fixed by changing the drive line angle. Besides that I had the actuator changed in the HVAC system because it wasn't blending properly. I usually get new trucks every two years and by far this one has been the best overall. Over the last 15 years I've had 5 Fords and 3 Chev's. This is the longest I have kept a truck as I am happy with it.

RE: Changing rear flat tire on a Dually

Last month I was visiting my parents in Arizona. We went for a drive south of Tuscon on some back roads following the Mexican border. Stopped at an old mine to have a look. Open the door and all I can hear it air escaping the inner drivers side rear. My Dad checks the other side. Wouldn't you know the outside is flat. Of course we are in the middle of nowhere. At least there are lots of Border Patrol around. No cell phone coverage so we had no choice but to slowly continue on. Took a couple of hours but we made it back to hard top. Called Onstar and asked what they thought about driving on two flats. Obviously replacing one doesn't solve the problem. After speaking with their tech they recommended to remove the two outer tires and run on the inside ones only.
We drove 60 miles until we hit the interstate. Stopped to check the tires and there was no heat build up. Stopped at a few truck stops but nobody had replacement tires in stock. It was late so we decided to drive the 100 miles back to the campground. We stopped once to make sure everything was fine and no heat build up at all.
The next day brought it in and had a TEK screw removed from the one tire and the other was a bad valve. No idea how long the other tire had been flat. Less than $50 to fix both.

RE: To cover the slide or not

We have toppers on all four of our slides. On the 3 smaller slides they work great. Much easier to sleep when it is raining. Makes it much quieter over your head. But our larger main slide is a pain. If it rains hard it fills with water. Then you have to be careful when you bring in your slide because the water holds down the fabric and will fold over onto itself. The other issue is if you have the slide open for a few weeks and it had rained the water and dirt that collect make a real mess. Not the end of the world but if you get leaves and stuff it will stain. So a few times a year I have to scrub them down.
So if you can get a product that gives you a better slope you should be fine. I would still get them again even with the issues I have had.

RE: Goodyear Marathron Chinese tires

smithrjd,
Go worry about how your mileage is or if you have enough ice for cocktails.
Enjoy your RV and move on.
I've worried more about 8 and 10% grades then the tires.
You've got one of the best trailers and best warranties on the market give a little credit where it is due.
Exactly. I agree
There is always going to be someone who has a horror story about one brand or another. That's the joys of the internet. You can keep looking until you find the answer you are looking for.

RE: Goodyear Marathron Chinese tires

As I stated before, I always check tire pressure and the lugs for that matter. The Jayco is rated at 14500 gross. Not sure if it has 6K or 7K Dexter axles. I do remember that the tire pressure was 65PSi so load range D I would guess. Trailer is not at the house right now. I guess I will run them for now and see how it goes, just bought the truck and a new trailer...
My Jayco is rated at 15700 gross and this is my second season with the Goodyears. And yes they were made in China. I've got about 10K on them mostly driving on northern US and Canadian 2 lane highways including some gravel. So not an easy life. But they still look more or less like new. I always check the pressure, protect them with 303 and cover them when parked in the sun. They more or less still look like new.
