RE: Half Ton Axle Rating Question

Your 3500lb axle rating is the weight rating of the 2 P rated tires. Put the LT`s on it and you will have the weight rating of a compareable F250 axle rating of the same era. Changing tires will not change the manufacturer's certified limits as stated on the placard. You may have technically increased the rating, but legally it is unchanged.

RE: What a difference a year makes!

I don't think anyone thinks ricatic deserved to have his truck fail or that anything was "coming to him." People are merely commenting on the irony of how things played out. Remember Harold Camping? He thought he had the data right, he thought he could predict what was going to happen, and he preached about it far and wide. With all the attention he stirred up and preaching he did he was bound to get an equal ration handed back to him. ricatic thought he could predict the 6.7Ls future and preached far and wide, trying to make people believers and, unfortunately, discovered that nothing is perfect and now people are simply commenting on the fact that maybe he should've let the trucks speak for themselves over time and build their own track record. Is the 6.7 a bad engine? No. Is it perfect? No. Nothing ever is. Anyone that would put blind faith into something is bound to be disappointed eventually. That's just life.

RE: What a difference a year makes!

My ears were burning. So admittedly I've been out of the loop, but spending a few minutes poking around it appears the one person that touted the 6.7L PSD as the second coming has been smitten by the savior himself. Now, I don't wish any ill will or failures on anyone for making a different choice than I...but I can't help but think a big fat "Told you so" is in order. ;) I didn't say it in that thread, but I do recall saying about a year ago that it's too soon to tell if the 6.7L PSD will be good or not and people should probably wait until consumers start racking up the miles before claiming they're just as good as the other, proven engines out there. That's just common sense. The Cummins 6.7L had growing pains as well, anyone that would've claimed it to be just as good as the 5.9L without there being any track record to back it up would've been feeling pretty embarrassed. ;) fla-gypsy, you have to admit he kinda has this coming based on his previous attitude here and on other forums. It's not like people are gloating or poking fun at someone that's mentally challenged or simply had some bad luck. ricatic stood on his soap box and preached the wonders of the 6.7L PSD day and night for no other reason than he bled Ford blue and bought the truck, everything else being inferior for no logical reason and calling tow tests staged, conspiracies, or lies as well. I wish nothing but the best of luck with him and his situation. However, sometimes people need to be humbled. Time to disappear back into the night with my trouble-free Cummins 6.7... :D

RE: So long, and thanks for all the (smelly) fish!

I have been pondering getting out of the rv camping scene for some time. We have discovered the fun of going on cruises(Disney's Dream is real nice and I ain't got to mess with the sewer hose thing) and enjoying boating. Been searching for a replacement rv but cannot find a quality built product for a reasonable price. Best of luck to you in your pursuits of fun. Given the option, I think we probably would go with another boat before getting an RV. We actually sold our 17-foot boat a few weeks ago as that was going to be put towards a down payment on a new 5th wheel. Well...now it seems we've sold it for naught and both DW and I are wishing we kept it since it was paid off. Oh well, I told her we can always buy another. :) Next time around I want to get something larger that we can sleep on. Nothing crazy, but something with an aft cabin for the kids that we could take to Catalina for the weekend, etc. I love boats and boating, but the 17-foot was purely a lake boat, which is fine, but the selection of lakes around here isn't that great and I love the ocean.

RE: So long, and thanks for all the (smelly) fish!

Thanks for the words, everyone. :) I may still poke my head in from time to time. My Cummins isn't going anywhere, in fact I'm in the process of trying to sell the Roll-n-Lock and replace it with a SnugTop shell. Maybe now I'll start planning the other mods I had considered doing to it, which is basically outfitting it for off-road search and recovery. Since I have nothing to tow I don't have to be concerned about a lift affecting my towing ability. :B 12k winch and bumper, HAM/VHF radio, small lift to fit some 35" tires, lights, inverter or generator, recovery gear...could be fun! Just think of all the Fords and GMs I could rescue, too... :B Just kidding!

So long, and thanks for all the (smelly) fish!

Well, we sold our TT last Friday and have scrapped the idea of getting a 5th wheel since we simply don't travel as much as we had expected/hoped. Perhaps in another 10-12 years when the girls are out of the house and we're empty-nesters. :B In the mean time, we may rent now and then, who knows. It's been quite...interesting...around here. I hadn't poked around much in the past couple of weeks, though today I did wander through the forums a little. Yup, still the same. ;) So, everyone take care and perhaps we'll meet again down the road!

RE: Got my new TV

Towed the TT in my sig for a year and about 6,000 miles with a 2005 Nissan Titan SE Crew Cab 4x4. Also had 3 dogs, a shell, wife, 2 kids, bikes and generator in the back. Trailer was loaded with 2 weeks worth of clothes, etc. I had added Roadmaster Active Suspension to the Titan before I even got a trailer. In the end, my TT with a ~6700lb shipping weight weighed in at about 8000. I hit the scales, here's how it turned out: GVWR - 6522 GAWR Front - 3500 GAWR Rear - 3800 GCVWR - 14822 Scaled: Front axle - 3340lb Rear axle - 3800lb Trailer axles - 6960lb Total - 14,100lb So fully loaded I was under or at GAWRs and GCWR but over GVWR. The shell was probably 300lb, the generator was a good 100lb, trailer tongue weight was in the 1000-1100lb neighborhood. The TT has a GVWR of 9500lb, Titan had a max tow of 9400lb. It really depends on the trailer, but I found that looking at the trailer's GVWR compared to the truck's tow rating, not dry or shipping weights, is the best way to find something you can tow. In our case the GVWR was more than the Titan's max tow rating and we were over the Titan's GVWR fully-loaded. For a weekend trip there's no reason we wouldn't have been quite a bit lighter and likely under GVWR as well. If you have some CAT scales nearby, then definitely take the time to get your truck weighed with a full tank of gas and a typical load of people, that will tell you how much payload you have left for hitch, tongue weight, and gear in the truck. If you don't have scales nearby, make sure the trailer's GVWR is less than your max tow rating and you should generally be OK but at the higher end you will be pushing your GVWR, which unfortunately is the main problem with the vast majority of 1/2-ton trucks.

RE: Tundra question

I'm pretty sure that in the original post, she said she already tried to lock the door with the spare key and it wouldn't lock.... Yes, I have a "spare key" for my Ram as well...which has a fob. ;) That's why I asked how exactly she was doing it. Just a couple of posts up there's an actual 2007 Tundra owner that tried my method and says that it works, so it sounds like the OP actually was only trying by using the power locks.

RE: Tundra question

We have a 2007 tundra. I will be taking off with the dogs by myself this week with my husband joining me later. Just found out that when the truck is running, I cannot lock the door and use the spare key. Has anyone found any way around this...perhaps there is a setting in the truck I could change? I want to be able to keep the a/c running while I check into the campground without having to get both dogs out of the truck. thanks, Pam How are you trying to lock the door, with the power locks? If so then that's your problem. I don't have a Tundra, but most newer trucks, including my Ram, work similarly. What I do is this... - Lock all the doors while in the truck and all doors are closed - Unlock just the drivers door, get out, MANUALLY lock the driver's door with my spare key - Done Truck stays running, dogs stay cool. Trying to use the key fob or lock the doors using the power lock on the driver's door with the door open obviously doesn't work, so you have to think about how you would do things back in the day of no power locks. :D

RE: Can a truck properly pull a TT within 1/4-ton of spec limit?

To say the trailer has brakes and will take care of itself is being naive. A more capable TV will also bring more braking power to the table. Advancements like exhaust brakes are put on the more capable TVs to assist the trailer's braking system. Stopping ability is not as simple as the trailer has its own brakes. What is in front of the trailer has a major impact on how fast it stops........or doesn't stop. You clearly missed my point. This isn't my first rodeo or my first truck or my first time towing. ;) It really doesn't matter if a larger truck does a better job or not, implying that a smaller truck is inadequate as a result is being overly dramatic. The fact is, our pickups' brakes are rated to handle the truck's GVWR, not GCWR. Period. Expecting or relying on the truck to stop the trailer is foolish, you must have properly functioning and adjusted trailer brakes. I've towed my trailer with a 1/2 ton, I've towed it with my 1-ton, my braking has never been dramatic because I ensure all my systems are working correctly. Are my 1-ton's brakes better? Absolutely. Do I rely on them to stop my trailer, ignoring my trailer's braking ability? Absolutely not. Every one of us with a pickup towing a trailer are over the truck's brake rating which is why the trailers have brakes. Is it nice to have an extra cushion in case the trailer brakes have a problem? Sure. Is it guaranteed simply because you're towing with more truck than you need? Nope. Point being, if the OP is within all weights then he's within all weights. There's no need to bring braking into this since the truck isn't rated to STOP the trailer in the first place. Anyone that questions a vehicle's stopping ability when they're not overweight is simply trying to find a way to play weight police when there's no logical or technical reason for them to. Being overweight is totally different, being under or right at the limits is using the vehicle to its full potential and the ratings aren't being exceeded, not even the brake ratings. There's no reason to put doubt into someone's mind when they're not doing anything wrong with their vehicle. There are ALWAYS going to be better ways to do something, that doesn't make the lesser ways wrong.

RE: Dodge 2500 Fit and Finish

Just to add that yes, the 2010+ trucks are AWESOME...but that I also have 67k miles on my 2007.5 3500 and it's rattle, squeak, and noise-free. Couldn't be happier. Totally know what you mean about the '08 Grand Caravan. We traded my wife's last weekend, last year we also settled our lemon law lawsuit against Chrysler for the brakes, had them replaced for free again at the time (36k miles or so), and by the time we traded it in the rotors were warped again and more rattles were developing. Heck, even the rocker panel under the driver's door started rattling on the highway due to wind! What the heck! Now there's a 2011 Challenger sitting in its spot in the garage. Good luck on the truck, you won't be disappointed!

RE: Can a truck properly pull a TT within 1/4-ton of spec limit?

All these people and their "too close for comfort" and "will it stop?" are forgetting a few things... First, 500lb under the rating is 500lb UNDER the rating. Do you honestly think a truck would be rated for something it can't do? The mfr's lawyers would have nothing to do with it. Your vehicle won't be the fastest on the road, but provided you're within ALL weight ratings then you're fine. Second, why do people think trailers don't have brakes? My TT has brakes, I'm pretty sure everyone else's have brakes, too. The truck is ultimately rated to stop its GVWR, that's it. The whole "will it stop?" argument is bogus, IMO. Technically, NONE of our trucks are rated to stop our trailers which is why the TRAILERS have brakes in the first place. The guy asked a simple question, there's no need to fabricate reasons why his setup won't be fine as long as it's within the weight limits. Seriously. I'm surprised nobody has made the argument "Well, it won't be able to do the slalom course at 50mph so no, you shouldn't do it." Come back to reality and let logic run free, please! :B

WTH? Now we are calling each other names, and the argument is about something I didn't even ask? Sigh. I'm sorry I asked. Welcome to RV.net. For some reason there are people that feel obligated to******in any thread related to Dodge. Not saying it doesn't happen to Ford and GM threads, but it's pretty ridiculous. As soon as my TT is sold I'll be saying sayonara to rv.net, it's too much like 5th grade here. Yeah, not even up to high-school or even middle-school maturity.

RE: 2007 Ram w/ 6.7L - good truck

In what world? They may be putting power through them but not reliably, ive replaced 3 of them already on trucks well under 500hp. The mighty Allison will give up the ghost just as easily if tuned much over stock. To say the 68RFE is weak because the truck was running a hot tune is a weak comment. :r The 68RFE is not built for the Cummins. Strange, because the 68RFE is *only* available behind the Cummins. If it weren't built for the Cummins then why isn't it behind any other engine? Seems you don't really know your facts. Plus its shifting is very odd (extremely close ratios in some gears) and nearly kills the truck in reverse. On the plus side it doesnt weigh anything(maybe 100 lbs at most) and can be changed in an hour or so. Yes, the shift logic is a bit wonky. I feel it shifts too early in the higher gears but that is easily fixed with a trans tune. Where are these folks running actual 600hp through these without issues? If they spent enough money to make 600hp (turbo, injectors, etc.) then im sure they spent the money on a built transmission before then. The exact same thing can be said about the Allison 1000. Sorry, but the 68RFE isn't weak and your "facts" are anything but.

RE: 2007 Ram w/ 6.7L - good truck

I found a great deal on a 2007 ram with the 6.7. Till now I've been looking at the 5.9, but this is so clean it's making me reconsider. Can anyone tell me what problems I might be looking at with the 6.7 vs the 5.9? I don't know much about the newer DPF trucks. Thanks for any help you can give! I say go for it. My 2007.5 6.7 has been great, no issues and I still have the DPF. Personally, I wouldn't do the deletes until the 5/100 warranty is up. I've been driving my 6.7 around town as well as highway, towing, etc and it hasn't given me any problems. I say, why do the deletes if it's working fine and you still have a warranty? The Smarty Jr is a good tuner, personally I'd go with the H&S XRT Pro and the Pro-Flo DPF delete pipe. The H&S requires less work than the Smarty, which requires you to unplug/remove various EGR and ETC components to work properly.

RE: Differential Oil

I would say never but if it gives the warm fuzzy's put Amsoil Synthetic in it at 25000 miles and then never change it again. I feel sorry for anyone that buys your vehicles. Proper maintenance is cheap.True. Dif oil still has to be changed at some point. But, running a true Group IV synthetic will let you go well beyond the grossly low change interval that Dodge says to use. My last rear dif fluid change had 100,000 miles on the gear oil using Amsoil 75w-90. I changed it approx 6 weeks ago with the same stuff. 74w-140 is not needed. Even AAM says that. Agreed, I replaced my diff fluids around 60k and they were still fine (Factory fill). Put in Mobil 1 75w90 and will let it go another 60k.

Posters: Thank you for all your comments and advise. It looks like the deal is done and I'm a proud owner of a 2011 Dodge 2500 Crew Cab 4x4 Laramie, with a 6.7L Cummins. Pics to follow. Now I just need to go to the doctors office for these heart palpitations...lmao Awesome truck! RE: Need professional advise

What I am trying to say is, your data doesn't compare a 2007(or any other year) gas truck to a comparable (same year) diesel truck. But your data does compare the costs of a new truck to an old truck. That may be usefull but not what the OP asked for. Well, let's take a look at what the OP did do. They had a 2008 gas truck and bought a 2011. 3 model-year difference. What did I do? Went from a 2005 gas truck to a 2007.5 diesel (Same as a 2008 for all intents and purposes). 3 model-year difference. Seems my real-world comparison was actually pretty similar. ;) Besides, why would I pretend to know what it's like to own something which I haven't owned? Would you have rather I just made numbers up for a truck I didn't own or provide info based on actual ownership? :h And please send me the name of the insurance company that insures a vehicle worth $15,000 more for the same price, I want to get my insurance there also (unless of course it's PL/PD which I don't want). State Farm. I carry the max limits, $500 ded, full coverage, multi-car, multi-line, good driver, and loyalty discounts. I also have a $1m umbrella policy on top of that. And in case you still don't believe me, here's a change I made yesterday. Replaced a 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan (Bought new, booked for about $18k when we sold it over the weekend) with a brand-new 2011 Dodge Challenger R/T. Retail price difference of $17k and a different class of vehicle. The premium changed by $13/mo ($156/yr). When I replaced my Titan with the Ram the change was just about the same, I don't remember the exact price but it was inconsequential. I'm not here to convince people they should do something, I'm sharing my personal experiences. Why would I make the numbers up? If you don't believe me, fine. Don't believe me. Ultimately I do know what my vehicles cost me, I don't need a book to tell me what my costs "really" are considering that book has no clue about me and my life. If people want to use it as a guideline when trying to make a decision that's fine, but just like most books and people there's "book smart" and "street smart." The book is right in theory, the street is smart in reality regardless of whether or not the book's data is based on input from the street. The point is not everything or everyone will fit into the book's model.
