RE: Personal Property Tax

My pop up's license tabs cost $13.00 a year and IIRC that includes a $5.00 wheelage tax that is added because of the county we live in. No personal property tax no special city tax, our property taxes are divided up by the state, city, county, school district, and some assorted watershed commissions.

RE: Forgot to close tank valves

The only real precaution is that you should avoid drinking the gray tank water, at least for awhile.
Uhm why would you ever consider drinking your grey water????

RE: Forgot to close tank valves

I'm surprised no has mentioned that it's not all that uncommon, particularly among veteran boondockers, to use a third valve so that the grey and black tank valves can both be opened to equalize the levels. Since the grey tank normally fills faster than the black, using that method extends the grey capacity. Content mixing? So what... It's all sewage anyway.
Good God...that could cause a nuclear explosion, or perhaps a black hole that would suck the entire solar system into the space of a golf ball!

RE: Traveling North Dakota

Go online and look for the North Dakota Tourism Bureau I was able to request for info and brochures and so much came (in a box and a large mailing envelope) I haven't been able to go through it all yet. It all depends on what your looking for to do for fun. Enjoy your trip and definitely stay off the Interstates unless your trying to make time. One of the drives I will remember for the rest of my life was a drive on US 40 from N/W Colorado to Reno Nevada. The loneliest Hwy in America.
Enjoy your trip

Theodore Roosevelt National park campgrounds

We are thinking about going to Theodore Roosevelt National Park this summer during the first part of August. Looking at the web site the campgrounds are just first come first serve. Does anyone here have any recent experience up there with getting in for a spot? I would hate to drive all the way out there and find it so packed we can't even camp.
Thanks in advance,

RE: Entry to Canada with DUI

I wasn't aware that the US had the same restrictions on CN drivers with a DUI on their record.
They don't.. Canadians can travel to the US all day long with a DUI on their record. It's been that way for a long time.
But for US citizens traveling to Canada, its a different story.
A DUI in Canada is apparently a more serious level of a crime than in the US. One website I read stated that a DUI is considered a felony level crime. People on both sides of the border are denied entry to both countries based on previous crimes they have committed. When you cross an international border you need to follow their laws and regulations.

RE: Kind of interesting RV....

We rode in a Hi Ace Van when we were in Africa, in Ethiopia they use them as large taxi's crammed with people. It's a workhorse probably sold throughout most of the world like the old Toyota Hi-Lux pickups. Probably very slow but alot tougher than anything based on a US sold toyota Mini van.

North Dakota has had a huge housing shortage and there have been reports of some walmarts becoming more like RV Parks so you probably want to call ahead as the rules may change quickly.

RE: RV wreck Hard to understand

In Minnesota if your over 26,000 lbs or your carrying more than 15 passengers you need a class B License. UNLESS you are driving a non-commercial vehicle such as a motor home. Even though he was a juvenile driving (per the news here in MN) a provisional license he was legal to drive the RV and Trailer which either weighed or was licensed to 57,000 lbs GVW (Can't tell from the news reports). No matter what no motor homes I have seen have ever had seats for 18. let alone seat belts.
There were two people who had seat belts on and my guess is they were in the cab of the truck.

RE: RV wreck Hard to understand

The news this morning reported that it was a 17 yr old who was driving, and the newspaper said it was a homemade truck conversion, looking at it probably the only seatbelts were in the cab, and the driver survived by the way. The trailer was used to haul Atv's and motorcycles. Several of the dead appear to be children also.

We have had good times camping as close as 5 miles away from home.... It was handy when we had to run one kid to the Orthodontist for an emergency braces repair... then straight back to camping

RE: Pay at pump question

There have been so many cases of people standing at a gas pump with a freshly stolen credit card and buying gas for friends or even strangers who pay the guy cash without the limits you could get charged for a couple of thousand $$$ in fraudulent charges in a couple of hours. Whenever your traveling outside of your normal area where you make charges it never hurts to call your credit card company/bank and let them know, they will put a note on the account and it can stop your card from being denied on your trip.

I have seen those signs on RV's at dealerships, you may have seen a unit in transit. Tho I haven't seen an RV that had any quality electronics that I would think was worth it to steal.

RE: Do you guys take wood with you to the campsite?

Question, Can't they spray for these bugs and why wern't they stopped before they got in? Or is this like the fish going into lake michigan. WELL WE MIGHT DO SOMETHING BUT WE CAN'T DO THE ONE THING THAT WOULD STOP THEM CLOSE THE LAKE
The cost for treating each individual tree is very expensive... If you have an Ash tree in your yard you want to save it would be worth it but if you have 30 acres of woods with a thousand ash trees you probably couldn't afford it.

RE: Do you guys take wood with you to the campsite?

OK. I like how problems such as the EAB is the fault of people! bugs have been around forever, before their were humans! trees will become immune to them and then trees will make a comeback. then some other bug will show up, and guess who`s fault it will be? ours! you can believe whatever you want from the govt. It is very easy to point fingers instead of telling it like it is. It's nature. Last I checked you can't control nature.
I'll keep bringing it and will not lose sleep over it!
Actually EAB is peoples fault.... I found this in the FAQ part of www.emeraldashborer.info
Where did the emerald ash borer come from?
The natural range of Agrilus planipennis, or the emerald ash borer, is eastern Russia, northern China, Japan, and Korea. Before June of 2002, it had never been found in North America.
How did it get here?
We don't know for sure, but it most likely came in ash wood used for stabilizing cargo in ships or for packing or crating heavy consumer products.
How is this pest spread?
We know EAB adults can fly at least 1/2 mile from the tree where they emerge. Many infestations, however, were started when people moved infested ash nursery trees, logs, or firewood into uninfested areas. Shipments of ash nursery trees and ash logs with bark are now regulated, and transporting firewood outside of the quarantined areas is illegal, but transport of infested firewood remains a problem. PLEASE - do not move any ash firewood or logs outside of the quarantined area.
The EAB beetle is not native to North America and since it apparently is not migratory capable of flying across the Pacific Ocean people brought them over to North America where they don't have natural predators and they are starting to decimate the Ash forests. The best way they have right not to control it is not move firewood and follow the rules in place even if you don't understand them or agree with them.

RE: Do you guys take wood with you to the campsite?

I usually carry my own firewood. It seems strange to me that almost all states are now taking the position that bringing firewood into their state will damage their trees. If that were so then that would mean that all states have the same tree problem and bringing in my own wood wouldn't bother anything. It's kind of like here in California you can't bring any fruit into Calif. Most times when I'm re-entering Calif from out of state the border (fruit) guards just wave you through without even asking if you are carrying produce of any kind. Waste of time and money.
Wow.... Different parts of the country have different types of trees, so not everything is the same (never seen a royal palm tree in the woods on the north shore of Lake Superior). But the laws restricting transportation of firewood is to stop an infestation from one area to jumping across country. They started out with the suggestion but with attitudes like this they have had to make laws. Here in MN Emerald Ash Borer beetles which don't move very far or fast managed to jump the St. Croix River from Wisconsin and go 30 miles into the state to infest a stand of Ash trees in the inner city. They didn't move there on their own.
The posts about pallet wood or treating the wood yourself or why a firewood dealer can transport firewood while you can't are the reason's they have had to make these laws. Because people think they know better or they can bend or break the rules because it won't hurt anything if they do it. Just follow the bans on transporting firewood and follow the rules, yeah they might put a crimp in something you want to do but they are for good reason...
Rant over..

RE: Weight Stations and RV's

Minnesota has had inspection checkpoints once in a while for all trailers. They seem to focus on a lot of the landscapers who had junk equipment or loose loads and such. Unless the sign says RV's or all vehicles over a certain GVWR you should be good to pass on by.

RE: US Health Insurance for Canadians??

When you add up what an employer pays and what a family pays on top of that for one month of health care coverage it can easily be over $1,000 a month. And you still have co-pays for everything. I have tried to argue some of our medical insurance co-pays for things like physicals which are supposed to not have a co-pay. I really get steamed when we are basically paying them what a mortgage for a home would be in a year and they want to nickel and dime me over $30.00

RE: Eliminating State Income Tax

Thanks for all the replys. I'm sure Oklahoma is going to get its money from us one way or the other. The argument for eliminating the state income tax is that the state is going to cut expenses in enough places to offset the lose of the income tax. And just look at all the industry that will come running into the state with no income tax to pay. Yeh, sure, and the sun comes up in the West every morning.
Thanks again.
Wagonmaster2
Every once in a while we get a radio ad campaign here in the twin cities from Sioux Falls SD touting their business friendly climate no state income tax and cheaper property values and labor costs. While I am sure some smaller business have re-located. I haven't heard of any major industries making the move.

RE: Question, makeing 911 calls when your not home

In Minnesota the cell phone calls to 911 go to the Dispatch center serviced by the area that the cell tower you are calling from is at. That may not be in the same county or even state that you are in so it is always important to know where your at at least the county and city. Yes they can triangulate the signal and get very close to where your at, but if your calling 911 for an emergency it is much quicker to get a response when you know where you need the help. Picture calling 911 from a hotel and you don't know the name of the hotel, the city or what room number your in, you need help and it will direct them to the parking lot but have no idea where your at there.
