RE: The Class B makes a great Bug Out RV

Mike, the responses here and on your blog ("that boob...") show how few people have examined or are committed to their life-as-we-know-it ever being seriously interrupted for any reason. For most RVers in particular, I think the idea of a BOV equates to; "grab the credit cards and let's get on the Interstate and go somewhere the TV says is safe."
I've worked for years making my conversion van into a self-sustaining BOV/RV after my wife died and I no longer had need for motor homes or trailer. My conversion van sits in the car port as the only vehicle here in my wooded corner of the Arkansas' Ozarks. It has a 40-quart AC/DC refrigerator, plenty of storage plus a 4x6 foot trailer for longer times away. My Honda e2000i generator has a three-way carburetor for gasoline, propane and even natural gas. There's auxilliary heat. Microwave stove and propane two-burner. Food and supplies for at least 3 days. Three months in the trailer. And 180 watts of solar power to run the refrigerator 24/7.
That's my idea of an RV BOV.

RE: American vs English Goldens

I'm neighbor to a pair of Golden Retrievers. They live with a bright little blonde Cocker Spaniel who has both of them whipped into shape to accept her as the Alpha dog. Fun to watch her bully those 90-pound woofers.
Me? Cocker Spaniel rescue dog. Now just about two. She and the above-mentiond Cocker make up the local Ozarks turtle and chipmunk relocation association.

RE: Weather Radio

From more than a half-century of radio listening, buying and experience; 1. Any of them will be only as good as price. 2. Signals at that frequency travel line of sight and hand-helds will be reliable only outdoors for the most part. 3. The NOAA weather radio concept is a good one but becomes quickly stressed in bad weather (too few people - too much automation). 4. Count on it only to alert you to pending weather conditions several hours or more out. 5. Never count on it when the weather is upon you. It will be late with alerts or confusing in what it tells you unless you have experience with terms and locale.
A police scanner will be a more appropriate investment. On it you can hear actual people in the area around you reporting what they see and are dealing with. Best brands are Uniden/Bearcat auto-programming models, most in the 250- 500 dollar range that keep up with technology. I have two in the RV and a table-full at home.

RE: Diesel $3.60 and rising, Drive like an Old Man to Save $?

Driving smoothly, planning ahead for speed changes and stops/starts and not worrying about what others are doing (unless it is texting or cell talking, which can kill you as well as them) will do as much as you can to conserve fuel. That and routine maintenance.

RE: Electric Question about Conversion Vans

OP, if you're looking and not yet committed to what you buy, you might want to look at my conversion of a conversion van into a more comfortable setup that can be reverted to all seats again some day if necessary. You'll find it at www.cheaprvliving.com. Look along the left side of the page for "Easy van conversion." and lower for the solar installation at "Stealth solar."
My conversion van as purchased had no "house battery." It does now.

Fellow ham, Jeff, tells it best. Waste a little energy or a lot of money that the OE folks welcome for their high-priced accessories.

RE: NovaKool Refridgerator

Check the power requirement for DC. I'm sure you'll find it, as most any other except Engel, requires more battery than you can keep going without solar or some other way of meeting that much drain.
I've been a happy Engel user for several years. It uses a "swing" compressor or rotary type that uses a great deal less power than absorbtion or conventional compressor types and has no worry about level.

RE: What size generator do we need?

There's AC current and then there is AC current. Not all is the same (clean and well regulated). Any generator putting out 3500 to 4000 watts of 120 volt AC and selling for $300-400 is likely going to have a cheap electrical unit. I've seen voltage on some vary from 105 to 140. That can fry many electrical devices. And, without at lest a brief look at the power output on an scope presentation, you have no idea of what spikes occur at load up, start up, etc. You need professional help on choosing right. And cheap and quality don't go together regardless of what the salesman or RVer who has "used mine without any trouble for 100 years" says.
