RE: OOOPS, it happened again

I also have a 2004 duramax diesel., how does one get air in the system when refueling?
Heck if I know. I did find the screw at the bottom of the fuel filter slightly loose, but not enough to be leaking. The thread of the bleed screw on top of the filter appears to be slightly stripped also but that was not leaking either. I still need to put some thread sealer on that.
I tried changing tanks AFTER the engine failed.
The trick was to keep cranking the engine till the air was sucked through. I did not lay into the starter long enough. Lesson learned.
We have been almost 1000 miles since the incident.

RE: OOOPS, it happened again

Back on the road. Been in state parks last few days so no internet.
All resolved. Tower paid for all damage to truck, about $450, just as he said he would.
Engine problem was simply air. Grrrrrr! I know what to do if it happens again.
Cost us $250 & a visit to see Elvis in Memphis for the DW.
Ah, the joys of these long trips. Be prepared to make changes to plans or have them made for you.

RE: Rv Park Websites - Rates

I am another one for ignoring parks without published rates. No rates on website, click, next one. Their loss.

A trip to Alaska is not a trip to Alaska without doing that ferry & the TOW.

We were at Chippokes last weekend. Almost full but very quiet. Lots of huge pull through sites. The ferry ride is a bit of a novelty.

RE: OOOPS, it happened again

Just some details on roadside checks based on 25 years of owning diesel powered boats but no formal mechanic training, the first thought was water or fuel contamination.
My truck has 2 fuel filters, the primary located under the bed & secondary on the engine. Checked both for water or dirt. Negative, though the secondary filter drain screw was a little loose but not enough to be leaking. Also checked the purge screw on top of the filter. Got just a tiny bit of air out of that while pumping but nothing of signifigance.
Also disconnected the batterys to reset the computer hoping that it might have lost its senses temporarily. Nope. No luck there either.
Fuel was getting to the filter but no further. Stuck fuel shut off solenoid? Maybe. Failure of diaphram in fuel pump? Maybe. Past that I am out of my league.
Hopefully I'll have an answer tomorrow & also hopefully it will not cost too much.

RE: OOOPS, it happened again

Whoa! Busy 24hrs. Truck is moved to a dealer. This time aboard a flatbead. So far everyone has been great. No contest from owner of tow company that dropped the truck & trailer. Local GM dealership is right on the job to get us fixed & on our way. Big discount for rental car (thankyou Enterprise). Thankyou also to local Americamp people. Word of our misfortune spread like wildfire around the CG & all have offered help & understanding.
I am really looking forward to finding out why the engine failed in the first place. Maybe diaphram failure in fuel pump?? $$$.

OOOPS, it happened again

Well, sort of. Truck broke down today. Don't know why yet but it quit, just died right after filling with diesel. Didn't even get out of gas station.
Tow truck arrived, hooked us up & barely got 100yds onto the highway when the truck, 5er attatched, broke loose & started rolling backwards down a slight grade.
Full marks to towtruck driver. He was out of the truck running back to the escaped tow & got in & slammed on the park brake before the rig got into a jacknife position.

FINAL destination. Surely there is only one final destination. All of the other stops are just that, waypoints on enroute to your destination which hopefully will not be your final destination.

RE: Class A motor home vs. car for trip out west

Like most say, crunch the numbers. How much is your hotel comfort level going to cost every day? How often do you eat in restaurants when traveling in the MOHO? How heavy is your right foot? Are you a KOA or Passport camper?
Lots of variables which will make a huge difference in the bottom line.

RE: RV's

RVing seems to be similar to boating. The big motoryacht people don't hang with the smaller cruiser people. The small cruiser people don't hang with the outboard people. The trailerboat people hang together. Sailboat people don't hang with powerboat people of any type.
Nobody likes jetski people.
I have no idea why.
At least in CGs you can strike up a conversation with most anyone as you walk around.

RE: Kind of interesting RV....

Lots of the commercial versions of those Hi Ace vans running around here as well. We also drive on the left, as does a sizable portion of the world. They are used as mini buses, taxis, panel vans as well as a pickup versions which can outcarry anything that Detroit produces. The pickup version bed is huge & flat. No wheelwells.
The bad thing is that they are death traps. You sit ontop of the engine with your legs in front of it. Run into anything & say bye bye to your legs for starters.
