RE: Streaming from computer to OLD TV

Thanks for the replies and advice. Probably a device like ONE OF THESE would accomplish what we need. They're reasonably priced, and have had good reviews, but of course your further comments are most appreciated.

RE: Secure Wi-Fi on the road???

In spite of using a secure website it is my understanding that an public WiFi connection is far from secure. You could be referring to the network security on public WiFi which is not the same thing. When using public WiFi, File and Printer Sharing on your connected device should be turned off and your firewall should be turned on. This secures your files from others on the network. This is not the same as what passes over the wireless connection web communication. Ok, I'm going to show my ignorance here. How do you turn off the file & printer sharing? If you use Windows XP (as we still do), HERE is how to do it.

Streaming from computer to OLD TV

We've been expecting our old Magnavox TV to die for some time now, but it continues to work well, day after day, and we're reluctant to part with it. (It's about 22 years old, one of the last built in the USA.) No HDMI port of course, it's obviously analog/low definition, but does have the RCA audio and video jacks. Has anyone come up with a method to stream video from a computer to an obsolete TV like ours? Or do we have to replace it? BTW, our cable provider converts the digital signals to analog at their end, so no digital-to-analog converter is needed. However, this will change soon, and they will be providing "free" D-A converters for those of us with old analog TV's.

RE: Quicken - some info that may be new to you

Well, call me old-fashioned, but I still use MS Money for our financial records. Microsoft no longer supports it as it has been discontinued. As a result, it has no on-line capabilities, which is fine by me. Me thinks it's foolhardy to trust a so-called "secure server" used by Quicken/Intuit. The following link shows how hackers can get into sites that are probably more secure to begin with than anything that Quicken uses: Saudi Arabia & Israeli Hacking Activities

RE: Extended warranty worth it?

FYI, dealers refer to these extended warranties as "ADP", or "added dealer profit". Caveat emptor, as others have stated; i.e. make sure that what you believe to be covered is ACTUALLY covered, should you decide to go with it.

RE: GPS what is the best?

We still use an old Garmin Street Pilot C340. Did I say old? It's really old. It's the old format - not a flat screen but it looks like a little CRT monitor. We haven't even updated the 2008 maps and we're amused when we drive on a new road and the GPS shows us driving through a field, with "Jack" always saying "recalculating". Because of its age, when setting out on a RV trip, we make sure to have road maps handy, and often print out directions from Google or Mapquest just to be safe. Like others have stated about newer GPS units, our C340 sometimes goofs; e.g. in Florida one time, it said to turn left to get back on the interstate, but the state had built a cloverleaf at that intersection, so we had to turn right instead. Even with a new GPS, one has to exercise caution and remain alert. IMHO

RE: Ford planning a Sprinter shaped van in US market

I expect that as always the manual transmission won't be available here. unfortunately... Are driving skills of North Americans considered inferior to Europeans, or do they consider us "lazy"? You'd think that the 6-speed manual would at least be offered, but undoubtly their marketing surveys have indicated that the manual wouldn't sell. Pity.

RE: It's winter, I have a Roadtrek, I don't know what to do

To make winterizing easier for next year, and to use only a half-gallon or so of the "pink stuff", consider installing a winterizing valve, available at RV suppliers. Here's a photo of our installation on a 1996 D190V: http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc230/VE3ESN/RoadtrekWinterizingKit-1.jpg

RE: over night stop on way to Disney

If weather or traffic results in not getting as far as expected, try Fort McAllister State Park in Richmond Hill, GA, just south of Savannah. It's not too far from I-95 and is a nice, quiet park with water and electricity at each site.

RE: IE8 is so S-L-O-W

It seems there are many RV.net users that want to argue over which browsers operate faster and like to claim many have problems. Do not forget that there are many computer brands are suppling computers with cpu's ranging from single cpu configuration up to 4 cpu(8-core) configurations (such as Intel i7). Since the majorty of computers sold to the general public are the cheaper, slower, computers people may may have problems with the newest versions of different browsers. If you are really looking for speed and reliability it stands to reason to replace an old computer with the best fastest system out there. A comparison would be the salesman pushing the 1500 model pickup instead of selling you the needed 2500/3500 model pickup. Newest versions of browsers are always designed for the newest and fastest CPU chipsets, not our slower cheaper computers. It goes without saying that the newests versions may not work well on your current computer. But if you're happy with your existing "slower" computer, and don't want to spend the $$ to upgrade, try the different browsers to see which one works the fastest for you. We have an older Dell laptop and a slightly newer Acer netbook (both run on XP so you can see they're getting a bit long in the tooth). That's why we use Chrome as our browser of choice, because, for us, it's the fastest. Of course, your results may vary!

RE: IE8 is so S-L-O-W

Some "experts" claim that the speeds of the common browsers are almost the same, but I agree with you. When I compare speed that various websites load (including this one), Chrome always comes out ahead. That's why I use it as my default browser.

RE: Bogus e-mail

Have any of you received a telephone call like this? A guy with an East Indian accent says "...it's about your computer". I remember reading about this scam where they tell you that your "computer is infected", they have you sign into an internet site and then (with your so-called permission) take control of your computer. They then install a virus in your computer (surprise!) and of course you can see this horrible thing on your computer (!) They do say you'll have pay X dollars to get it removed. Then of course they've got your credit card info.

RE: What browser do you and why?

Just came across THIS INFORMATIVE ARTICLE. The conclusion about speed is revealing, so your choice of browser comes down to a matter of personal preference. Having said that, I do like Chrome a lot, and use it about 99% of the time.

RE: West Virginia - what to see?

We've stopped several times at TAMARACK, and have enjoyed it. BTW, it's a good overnight stop as well, if you're enroute somewhere and don't need a CG.

RE: What browser do you and why?

I use Chrome with Adblock Plus and like its tab layout and favorites functionality better than IE. Never any issues. On our two networked computers (a Dell laptop and an Acer netbook), Chrome is faster than IE, but as others have said, that could be more a function of our computers.

RE: Dodge 3500 Ram Van Cruise Control Help Needed

I don't know much about cruise controls, but our '96 Dodge 318 cu. in. developed a vacuum leak which caused a similar malfunction. Once that was repaired, it was OK.

RE: Samsung Chromebook

Now that I see the Chromebook is selling for $499, all I can is YIKES! That's WAY too much. We paid $298 US for our Acer Aspire One netbook about 3 years ago, and I know they're even cheaper now. So it takes me a few seconds longer to boot up....so what? I'm retired, and have the time! :) Connecting to wi-fi is quick, easy, and virtually automatic. So to the OP, I'd look around at the competition very carefully.

RE: Samsung Chromebook

If the price is right, it looks like a great product. The free-for-two-years Verizon is a nice extra. "With your Chromebook, it’s easy to get connected. Now you can stay online at home, outdoors, or on your morning commute with built-in Wi-Fi and up to 100MB per month of mobile broadband service free for two years, provided by Verizon Wireless. For additional data, simply pay-as-you-go so you’ll never pay for more than you need." IMHO, Samsung makes good products (we have a TV which is excellent), and having a netbook that doesn't rely on MS Windows is a good idea. As more folks are migrating to the "cloud", a netbook like this one makes perfect sense. We have an Acer Aspire One netbook which we use when travelling, but if purchasing a netbook today, we'd seriously consider this Chromebook. (We use Google Chrome as our browser and are happy with it, but don't have experience with the Chrome Operating System).

RE: RV Tires now available at Costco Canada

I have to apologize to my fellow Canucks for the original post. I must have been on the Costco.com site, not Costco.ca, because a detailed search on the Canadian site failed to reveal any RV tires. Sorry guys & gals. I guess they stock some trailer tires as Packet Backer says, but I don't think that their shops are equipped to install tires on a trailer.
