RE: New TOAD question

We have a 2004 Suzuki Grand Vitara that we have been towing since we owned it. We are fulltimers and travel at least 10,000 miles a year. No major problems just regular maintainance. My only complaint is that there are not many dealerships around so sometimes it takes a bit of time to get parts. We had problems with our rear seals and it took a couple of orders to get the correct part. They do drive a bit more like a truck than a car but for what we need it for it is good.

RE: Motorhome Delivery problems

The rules in Calif are a little odd. We are South Dakota residents and bought a rig in Calif. We had to take delivery out of state, also. If you buy a vehicle in Calif and take delivery in Calif, you have to pay Calif sales tax regardless of where you are going to register it. Most dealers know this and work with it all the time.
Did you buy from a private party? That might be why you don't have the original docs. It does take time to get the pink slip from the state.

RE: TriCare and Medicare question

1. Only if you don't have other insurance through a job. If not, then yes.
2. Absolutely yes. Can't have Tricare for Life without Medicare
3. Currently it is around $100 a month
4. Medicare pays first then Tricare for Life (TFL). SS doesn't pay anything.
You do not want to sign up for one of the Medicare policies that are out there. TFL is your part D plan and is very inexpensive (for now). If you travel a lot I don't recommend Tricare Prime. Too hard to use when traveling. Stick with TFL.
We have had this setup for a number of years and everything works well. My out of pocket costs last year were only for my co-pay on drugs and that was under $200 (I take some expensive drugs so your's probably won't be that high.)

RE: Problem with Winegard satellite

When it loses the signal we are sitting still in a park. I don't use it while in motion.

Problem with Winegard satellite

We recently purchased a new-to-us rig (see sig). It came equipted with a Winegard Movin'View Model MV-0099 single receiver antenna. Sometimes it won't lock onto the satellite. Sometimes it lock on and then a little bit later it loses the signal. Sometimes it works perfectly. I am pretty sure the problems are with the dish and not the receiver as I also have a portable dish that works fine.

RE: Floor Plan - TV Placement

We have a Winnebago Vectra and it has the main TV behind the passenger's seat at about eye level when sitting on the couch or chair. We are fulltimers and I think the layout for this rig is perfect.

RE: GPS for RVs

I have a Rand McNally 7710 and there are two separate modes; one for car and one for RV. Easy to switch back and forth. I love the number of campgrounds it has as POI's.

RE: mike thompson rv

We have purchsed 2 rigs from them. You do have to know what you are looking for and what a good price is. The buying process went smoothly. We have used the Santa Fe Springs and the Colton locations.
Now on the negative side - I don't think I would ever take anything to them for service work. We have never had them do work but too many friends have and the service was not good. It has taken way too long to get anything done and it seemed like every time they took the rig in, it came back with something else broken. I even told this to the salesman we worked with.

RE: jelly packs

These packets come in large quantities so make sure you will use them all in less than a year. When jelly is stored in that small of a size it dries out quickly and becomes rubbery. Maybe you and a few friends could go in together and get a box? I would try the big warehouse stores as well as Smart & Final, or restaurant supply store.
Also, those packets do not do well when stored in a hot place. I assume you want to keep them in the RV, which would shorten the shelf life. And ants love them.

RE: Question about awning

Actually it is not redneck engineering. We had one on our other MH. The loop portion is indeed where you put the awning rod to loosen and tighten it. Instead of putting a hole in your roller it clamps down on it to keep the awning from unrolling. It shouldn't touch the awning if properly used so I don't know why you are getting holes.

RE: rv cards

We have cards that I made using MS Word and card forms we picked up at the office supply store. Since the only address we have is a mailbox address I didn't have a problem putting that on there along with email, phone numbers and blog address. The next batch I may leave off the address. There is also a picture of our last MH on it. Guess I need to print more with the new MH. I have handed out a few but rarely get any back.

RE: Kitchen must haves

I am a fulltimer. I couldn't live without my crockpot or toaster oven. Some of the things I got rid of after a couple of years were a griddle and a blender. I did get a Cuisinart Griddler and a small handheld stick blender. Since there are only 2 of us I find I don't use my dutch oven much but I keep it around. I have a handheld mixer instead of my Kitchenaid mixer. I don't bake like I use to. I use good Cuisinart pans and good knives. I don't have many large serving dishes, don't need them.

RE: Budget

We budget about $2000 for annual maintenance and little issues that pop up. We figure there will be at least one surprise each year when we travel. This amount covers oil changes and filter changes plus a little extra. Things like tires we know will have to be changed about every 6 years so we bank a little each month.

RE: Blackout curtains for looooong AK days?

When we went to AK I bought blackout liner material and made simple curtains by creating a pocket on top that I put tension rods in. This was cheap and easy to do. It also looked better than foil. If they were not in use I fold up the material and the rods go in the closet. They have come in handy in parks in the lower 48 where there are too many lights around.

We spend a couple of months in CA each winter to visit family and friends. We found a new to us RV that we liked and purchased it. My DH had checked online for the type he wanted and this one fit the bill.

RE: Sales tax question -

We are residents of South Dakota and just purchased a motorhome in Calif. We had to take delivery out of Calif so that we didn't have to pay CA sales tax. The dealership arranged for a driver to take the rig into Arizona and we finished the paperwork there. We then faxed all our paperwork to SD and paid the tax there. Each state has different rules on out of state purchases so make sure you talk to someone at the dealership
