RE: From Germany, LA, NY, to FL in THIS MH !!

We have come across these buses many times in our travels. They are commonly referred to as "The German Coffin" buses because the occupants sleep in elongated compartments, almost like drawers. I guess it is a cheap way to travel but not for everyone.
It is amazing to see them prepare a meal. A kitchen area pulls out and I think they take turns with the meal prep and clean up. At coffee breaks we have seen them out doing their exercises. It certainly is a regimented way to travel.

RE: Four Mile Creek State Park Camping

We haven't been to 4 Mile Creek for a couple of years, but I seem to remember being annoyed at having to pay an extra "administrative fee" or some other charge when we registered. It was only a couple of $'s, but it was to cover office expenses or similar. Isn't this why you pay a camping fee. It is a great park - we have been camping there since the 70's.
Try to get a site near the lake - you can view the Toronto skyline from there.

Round Kitchen Sinks

We have been looking at new rv's and many of them have a round sink in the kitchen. I think I would really miss my double sinks with a dish rack in the spare sink and a cover over it. If you have a round sink, do you like it? Would you do it again?

RE: Going to Dead Horse Ranch State park...recommendations???

We stayed at Dead Horse Ranch the first year the new section was open. We really enjoyed it and can remember sitting out at night and looking down at the town and we could see the stoplights were all sycronized and changed red or green at the same time. Also the lights up at Jerome were neat to see. A great area to explore.
We also enjoyed taking a Pink Jeep Tour - wow, unbelievable some of the trails we went over.
Love to go back.

RE: The Alasa Highway yesterday

Thanks for sharing your pictures. Back in the 80's, we ran cross country ski trips to Yukon from Southern Ontario. Those trips were in March to take advantage of the blue, blue skies, and milder temperatures and longer daylight hours. There is nothing like the pure white snow on the Kluane mountains in the winter. We loved skiing at the Chilkat Pass on the way to Haines - wonderful Yukon memories!

RE: Restaurants Suggestions near Niagara Falls

Our favorite place is the Skylon buffet. The floor revolves and overlooks the falls. After eating you can go to the third floor and walk around and see the view. Not cheap, but a nice treat. Our son really enjoyed it when he was about 10.
Note that this is on the Canadian side and OP said they were staying in US. We are going to the Skylon tomorrow night for dinner.

RE: Restaurants Suggestions near Niagara Falls

There are several nice restaurants in Lewiston if you happen to be staying at Four Mile Creek S.P. We like to go to Apple Grannies, although haven't been there for a while. Their prime rib used to be excellent and very reasonable price.
The Rivereside is also another popular choice, although more expensive.
Sorry we never eat in Niagara Falls, actually we avoid the downtown area.

RE: Thieves struck our storage yard.

I'm so glad I am not forced to keep my trailers at a storage lot -- if I were forced to, I would either move or give up camping.
Sometimes I think the storage lots at the campgrounds are safer. The only traffic there is other owners and most of the time those lots are out of site, unlike the typical storage lot that also has storage units and everything is out there for anyone driving down the road to see.
This was at a Provincial Park - since then they have improved the security,

RE: Thieves struck our storage yard.

You were lucky if that is all the damage you suffered. We had our unit broken into while in a storage yard, They stole a lot of small stuff, but also broke the skylight over the bed. It rained very heavy for 2 days before the damage was discovered. We had to replace the mattress and pillows as well as the skylight. Our insurance claim was over $3000.

RE: Out Of Province Medical Coverage

You just left home a week ago, right? How do they tell how long you have been gone? Or is it up to 30 days of coverage if you need it outside the province?
They know how long you have been gone - your passport gets swiped at the border, they can check credit card purchases and it is definitely not worth lying. If you have a claim, the insurance company will do everything possible to check validity to avoid having to pay. With medical costs in the US being much higher than in Canada you want to make sure you have proper coverage before traveling. Some things are not worth gambling on and this is one of them.

RE: florida gulf beach camping

For an out of the way place, near a beautiful beach (about l/2 mile away) and without crowds, check out Rustic Sands at Mexico Beach. We enjoyed a few days there last year. The c.g. is not fancy but is quite acceptable. There were a few restaurants along the beach and it is not far to drive to Port St. Joe or Panama Beach for various activities.

RE: 2012 Ford Focus

My comment above was regarding the 2012 Focus automatic (I have an SEL hatchback model). The only thing that needs to be done to tow the car (once you have base plate, tow bar and wiring installed) is to put the transmission in Neutral, turn the key to the off position - - and disconnect the negative battery cable. (There is NO need to stop periodically, start the engine and run the transmission through the gears as is required for some other Ford vehicles.)
Thanks also for that information - that is the same model we are contemplating.

RE: Summer Camping Trip- Two Months need help

We do a lot of traveling but we are retired and don't have rigid time restrictions. My concern is you are trying to plan too much - have a route and things to see/do at various destinations but be flexible. Weather can spoil some outdoor plans/activities. What if you really like an area and want to spend more time. If you have reservations that force you to move on, you will be disappointed. I always think it is better to really see an area well even if it means not going to some other places. There will be other trips in the future to go to areas you missed. Just don't wear yourselves out by trying to do too many things and not have some relaxation.

RE: Considering Changing Dingys

If you were planning to replace the Highlander anyway, then you may see some value to the investment.....BUT, if you go out and spend a few thousand dollars to try and save 1 mpg, it's going to take you an awfully long time to recoup your investment.
I honestly think that you will only see a minimal amount of difference, and may even see as much difference, if you cut your speed back 10-15 mph. (unless you are already running slow)
If you are happy with the Highlander, and it tows well, I'd keep it. If, however, you were going to get rid of it anyway, then, YES, I'd be looking for a lighter vehicle to replace it.
Our Highlander is 10 years old, low mileage, looks great, is clean and the perfect vehicle for us so we were not going to get rid of it. We were thinking of a more economical vehicle for every day driving, and would keep the Highlander but know it will not last forever. When buying another car, we want something that is an automatic and towable - a Ford Focus LE looks like it might be a good choice. If it would give us better gas mileage with the M.H. then maybe it would be worth the investment to set it up for towing. I agree though that spending $25,000 for the sake of an extra mpg is just plain stupid.
Thanks for your thoughts.

RE: Overnight Campground I 65 near Tennessee Border

When we travel up from Destin we always stay at Northgate its $25 a night cash or check -no credit cards-, full hook ups. Its 340 miles from Destin. Friendly host and easy on, easy off I-65 though you'll not road noise. The owners son sells farm fresh eggs for 25 cents.

Considering Changing Dingys

Our current towed vehicle is a Toyota Highlander, weight just under 5000 lbs. We are thinking of purchasing a lighter vehicle to tow, something in the 3700 lb. range. Will doing this improve the gas mileage on our M.H. (gas) or is frontal area more a deciding factor.
Our M.H. tows the Highlander with no problem on flat roads, but going through the mountains is a strain. With the current price of gas, we are hoping for improved performance with a lighter vehicle. Comments please.

You listed Niagara and Toronto - if you decide to come to Canada, customs is no big deal, but you all will need passports to get back into US.
